LHR-BOS VS or BA

Mon Jul 17, 2017 8:17 pm

Booking a last minute ticket in Y class, LHR-BOS. VS and BA have flights leaving minutes apart for the same price. What would you recommend. VS would be on a 787 and BA on a 747. I am more concerned with food and comfort on board, than aircraft type.

Usually I fly star alliance but this time I need need a non stop due to my schedule. Thanks for the advice.

Six or two threes.
744 will probably feel more spacious just because of the cabin size.

I've never flown on a VS 789 to comment on that but the last time I flew on a BA 744 [SAN-LHR July 2016] it was one of the most uncomfortable seats I have ever sat on and the food served for was so unpleasant [salty and slimy] I didnt eat the main course [although my travelling companion liked her dish]. So if I was making the choice I'd give the new 789 a try as I doubt I would enjoy it less than the BA 744.

My opinion:
Hard product: VS edges BA slightly. Both have the same seat pitch and width. VS however have power ports in economy unlike BA. However, in BA's 744, the last three rows are in a 2-4-2 configuration so you may get away with an empty seat beside you if you book in the right spot.
Soft product: VS seems more consistent than BA in some areas like food. The rest is pretty much the same.
Really, there isn't very much of a difference between them in economy. BA is less consistent than VS so I think VS has the slight edge over BA in your situation.

789 has power ports, as mentioned. I'd also expect it to have a more modern IFE system, but I wouldn't know.
A junkie for A340s, A380s, and of course Her Majesty the Boeing 747. I wish they were financially viable, but it is not to be.

You might get a refurbished 744 with a better screen, ports, power, etc. I've flown the BA 744 many times in all cabins and it's overall a comfortable ride. Plus the flight to BOS is not that long so it shouldn't be too much of a pain.

I had to fly the Virgin 789 to SFO earlier this year in Y and it was probably one of the most uncomfortable planes I've sat in. I'm average build, but was touching butt cheeks with the person next to me and kept getting hit by the people and trolley moving through the aisle. Overall this is not a Virgin complaint though, I'd probably advise anyone to never consider flying a 787 in Y.

Keep in mind that Heathrow is a very expensive airport to fly from and there are also flights from Gatwick to Boston on Norwegian. They're a whole lot cheaper than BA or Virgin from Heathrow, but the downside is you need to get to Gatwick instead of Heathrow. Norwegian flies with a 787 on this route (not sure if it's a 788 or 789, but that doesn't make much difference). That's a very fine plane if you ask me.

Well Virgin and BA can both get you to NYC for £400 return with free seat selection available at a certain time, meals and bags thrown in with the ability to chuck you on the next flight if something goes wrong. DY's base fare is cheaper but does it work out a huge amount cheaper 90% of the time when everything is thrown in?

It depends on how the carrier configures its aircraft. Coach pitch and seat width on one carrier may be different than another. Someone else may be able to comment if your experience is the same as other airlines' 789 layout.

I got lucky then. VS 789 LHR-LAX behind the wing and the center seat was unoccupied. I enjoyed my window seat...the fella on the aisle enjoyed his seat and we had space between us. I've also flown UA 788 and 789 domestically and enjoyed them both very much.

Barring last minute changes the 744s to BOS are all refurbished with the new IFE, seats etc.
