Maho Beach Advice/Tips

Wed Jul 12, 2017 6:14 pm

Hello,

It's been on my bucket list since I was 5 years old, and I am finally venturing to St Maarten this weekend to witness Mago Beach in all its glory. I've come all the way from Australia so would appreciate any tips/tricks to get the best spot, best photos (I'm dying to get one right under a jet standing on the beach or in the water) and the best days to go. Im arriving into SXM from Anguilla Saturday afternoon and leaving Tuesday. What would be the time AND day to catch the most European widebodies and 757s from the states?

Even landing into SXM on a DL 757 before transferring to Anguilla was one of the most awesome experiences. I am so excited!

Thanks so much!

For photos everywhere is a good spot! There are so many angles and ways to get creative when photographing, you just have to walk around and test them out. Try taking some test photos of the Twin-Otters, Caravans and BN Islanders that come and go all day long so you can set up for your shot for when the big jets come in.

Unfortunately the summer season doesn't see as many flights and wide-bodies as the winter season does. During the winter AA routinely runs the 757, A330 and occasional 767 to SXM, in the summer it is all A319/20 and 737's. The weekends are generally busier than week days with the busiest day being Saturday. I always look at the arrivals on flightstats.com a few days before and pick-out my highlights. I've thrown together a quick list for you of what my highlights would be.

Saturday:
Delta 757 at 12:40
Air France A340 at 13:45 (Daily)
Delta 757 at 13:55 (Daily)
Air Caraibes A330 at 14:25

Sunday:
Delta 757 at 12:40
Air France A340 at 13:45 (Daily)
Delta 757 at 13:55 (Daily)
KLM A330 at 15:25
TUI 788 at 17:15 (This is one of my favorites as the sun is almost setting, perfect "Golden Hour" lighting)
PAWA Dominicana MD83 at 19:15 (Just after sunset if you want to shoot in dusk)

Monday:
PAWA Dominicana MD83 at 13:15
Air France A340 at 13:45
Delta 757 at 13:55

Tuesday:
Delta 757 at 12:40
Air France A340 at 13:45 (Daily)
Delta 757 at 13:55 (Daily)
KLM A330 at 15:25

For wide-bodies definitely stick around Maho on Sunday, the 788 alone is well worth it. There are also many 737's and A320's that come and go through-out the day, American, Jetblue, Spirit, United, Delta, Copa, Westjet etc. Saturday will be busier with a lot more narrow-bodies. If you can only spend one day at Maho beach, hands down go on Sunday.

Other then TUI, a lot of the planes, especially from the states, arrive and depart around noon, say between 11:00 and 15:00, so that is just the best time for plane spotting in general. The Eurooean wide bodies tend to arrive and depart a little later then that though.
Why is flying so expensive? And why is flying well so much more?

I've been 3 times, and each time had a blast. I've only gone in peak season, though. You should still see many photo-worthy planes on the weekend. Busier Saturday but more heavies Sunday. I personally would go Saturday. Bring lots of sunscreen!! Have fun

PS. I just got back from Australia on vaca. I fell in love with Sydney!!!

Basically mid-morning to early afternoon is best for arrivals, and early to late afternoon is best for departures.

There are no regularly scheduled 747's to SXM anymore but I think AF still sends its A343. I would look that one up, but I'm pretty sure it gets there at around noon and leaves at 3-4pm. Most of the other reasonably big jets have a similar schedule.

That's a tragic story, but it probably won't have any real bearing on the OP's trip.
