Aircraft/airline fun facts and metrics

Sat Jul 08, 2017 6:40 pm

In the 1990's I led a rebranding project for Pizza Hut. It was actually a lot of fun (great people) and they had some of the craziest and also very interesting fun facts about the company: for example Pizza Hut actually knew exactly how many acres of pizza they sold a year worldwide. It was a metric they kept track of to help mark and celebrate growth. (I wish I recalled the number, but it was almost alarming how many acres of Pizza Hut pizza humans ate!)

I read here the 747 has flown over 74,000 trips to the moon and back!

I would have to presume in an industry as passion driven as flying, each aircraft/manufacturer and each airline keeps such fun facts, which could also be useful metrics.

We often discuss or read about total passengers a year, or safe trip completion and mathematical and financial. But what are some of the more obscure ones?

Does anyone here know some? Like since originally launched has the 737 made it to Pluto and back? Or an airline's total passenger count since they started operations or how many meals AA serves a year? Would they be bigger than McDonalds? Things that may not be on google?

I hope there are some fun and amazing ones!

Thanks, VC10er (the nerd)

A tunnel made out of all the delivered 737 fuselages would stretch from the Sunset Strip to the Vegas Strip (with about seven miles to spare).

A tunnel made up of the fuselages of all the ordered 737s would stretch from Santa Monica to Flagstaff. Or from LGW to AMS.

I read somewhere that the Wright Flyers first flight was shorter than the wingspan of the 747.

We call that a 757-300.

When I got checked out on the 787 the LCA told me the 787 has a footprint of a full acre. Really brings into perspective taxing around an entire acre.

It's true. Their first flight was only 120ft. It wasn't until their 4th powered flight that they broke 200ft.

Every 45 seconds Delta has an arrival or departure in Atlanta.

It's length times it's wingspan is. 93 Acres... Impressive, but not quite a true representation of "footprint"

When new ATR 72-600s are delivered, the ATR leaves a music number in the aircraft's computers. One airline I am familiar took delivery of two new aircraft, one aircraft received "stairway to heaven", the second one received "highway to hell".
