Airlines in need of a livery update?

Fri Jul 07, 2017 8:00 pm

To name a few that I think needs to update their livery are SAS, Aer Lingus, Air France (it has looked pretty much the same for at least 25y) and Singapore Airlines.

What airlines do you think are in need of a livery update?

China Eastern Airlines & Japan Airlines :D. Basically the same euro white livery with a different tail design and type font.

I just want more pin stripes and cheatlines on a number of liveries. Any livery with an oversized/truncated tail insignia like TK needs revisiting.

Would love to see the Death Star removed from UA (Return of the Tulip <3). Delta is getting out dated, but I like their tail. As far as Europe goes, Air France would probably be the one to repaint.

I hope we get to see more bland eurowhite liveries in the skies. I imagine SAS painting their planes white from nose to tail, engines, tail etc. And stamp a huge "SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES" in large black letters across the fuselage. As for SAA, perhaps they should make use of their meager funds for something else than a livery update, which is fine if you ask me.

Air China...but with the disaster of China Eastern, I won't wish too hard for that one. Most of the last few rounds of livery updates and rebranding have been awful, so I really hope no one else pulls the trigger soon.

Virgin Australia, their original scheme was much better, UA could use a refresh as well, the wavy golden stripe on the 787 fleet is a good addition but not enough to keep it current IMO, the Continental scheme has greatly dated.

China Eastern needs to go back to their old livery. I LOVED that livery. Although to be fair it was pretty dated but that's what was charming about it.

I have nothing against the U.K. but Ryanair's and Thomsonfly's liveries look like crap. Especially Thomsonfly. The over-exaggerated swoopy lines and that random dark blue spot on the top of the fuselage in the back is just awful. It looks like it was designed in MS Paint.

Also, Philippines Airline's livery is pretty sad looking these days.

One more thing. I hope Air China stubbornly sticks to their old school livery for as long as possible. It's stunning IMO and is so refreshing to see in today's sea of Eurowhite.

Anyone feel like ANA can use an update? It's been since 1982.

I think Singapore can use one too. The only update they have done really is the titles. I feel that the titles are way too big. Same with Korean. Always loved both of their liveries years ago, but now, not so much.

In regards to United, how do you incorporate the tulip and globe? I thought American's incorporation of the eagle as well as US's flag along with Delta's widget and Northwest's logo pointing northwest was a subliminal but clever move.

And how about Air Macau?

I despise anything 75% white and/or with a cheatline. I just don't see how LX or QF or LH can be appealing. Oh and UA too, it's a shame they didn't go with the blue Tulip

Keep the fuselage, but change the tail! I loved the old wavy gravy. The CEO may have been an SOB, but the tail looked great, very distinctive. Aeroflot comes close, but Delta was classier.

Sure, the wavy gravy looked good. But, from a branding perspective, the widget makes more sense on the tail.

Agree with you about LH - I liked their previous livery much better than the current one and was glad the resurrected it on one of the 748's

I'd have to disagree with Delta.

Big fan of theirs, ESP the tail and the new A350 wing tips! I saw someone put on with the DETLA billboard style on the fuselage on another post, that looked great.

It keeps the classy, corporate look. Professional.

I also love the new Delta belly they have been adding as well.

South African

Although finances won't allow that now...hopefully if they one day get new fleet (if they survive as well) then just some tweak.
Current livery is already 20 years old, even though it probably still looks quite nice, I'd say just to add something more from the tail going down on to the fuselage at the back...change the lettering a little bit and add something on one or both sides of the name

The first two that immediately come to my mind are UA and LH as mentioned before... both just make everything look so used and boring (especially because of the colors like grey and brown.

Also maybe A3... it just does not fit to their image imho.

SAS and Delta are good in my opinion. Their liveries are professional looking and neat, while having some kind of accent (DL's tail and new belly-branding and SK's orange engines).

Eurowhite can be pretty amazing as well i think if it is kept simple and minimalistic with an artsy touch. For me AY's livery still is one of the most beautiful out in the skies.

I hadn't known about that until I recently drove over the highway passing by FRA when a Delta 764 came in for landing right above me, it looked really cool from below!

As for airlines in need of a livery update, I'd say Avianca, LATAM or Iberia because their new ones are so horrible, but at the same time they are just that:
New, so there's pretty much no chance of that happening.
If IB could at least have the decency to paint the engines red on all their planes, not just the Iberia Express subfleet that would make a huge difference already.

Then of course the usual suspects like China Eastern, JAL probably too and all these other eurowhite abominations...

SAS would likely make the list too, but they're not that bad and there's a lot of potential to screw up. If they repainted all their planes like that one though I would be more than happy:

While I might be alone with that opinion, I don't feel like United is in any urge to find a new livery. I really like the globe symbol, it's such a classic symbol in aviation and especially on their Triple 7s the livery looks really smart imo. On top of that, everything liverywise that has been produced over the last years was literally crap so I really wouldn't risk it.

Delta needs the old wavy gravy tail back.
Lufthansa could use an update as well, it's rather boring.
United was better before the CO merge, but the battleship grey was even better than the pre-CO livery. To bad 9/11 tainted that livery.
Pretty much all of the Chinese airlines except for the ones that feature Pokemon on the aircraft at times.

On a good note tho, New Zealand's special black livery is one of the best out there.

No. Deltaflot looked like an 8th grader's Intro to Graphic Design homework. It was a mish-mash of a dated font and a way-too-common tail scheme, plus it seemed to pick up dirt and thus draw attention to DL's aging fleet. Delta's current livery is simple, classy, and dignified.

As for the thread topic: Good God, United. Burn down your entire brand identity and start over from scratch. You couldn't possibly do anything worse than what you currently have, the old Continental livery from the 1990s with the word "United" slapped on it in a hideous typeface. It just screams "We obviously don't care what our planes look like. What else don't we care about?" Christ, even Ryanair's branding is classier and more coherent than United's.

Spirit Airlines's Taxi livery is one of the dumbest ideas ever to come out of a design studio ever. "Hey, let's associate air travel with an outdated, smelly, uncomfortable, overpriced mode of transportation nobody likes!" Just in time for taxis to be shoved out of the picture by the likes of Uber and Lyft.

I'm sorry, but without the titles I couldn't tell China Eastern, China Southern, China Airlines, Air China, Xiamen, and Hainan apart if you held a gun to my head.

Southwest just did a rebrand, and I think it misses the mark. First and foremost, the color scheme reminds me of a Hot Dog On A Stick stand. The font for the billboard titles is all wrong. It loses so much being painted around the windows that the word "Southwest" becomes less-than-readable. Fix that, and you might have something to go on.

I'm sorry, it's 12:30AM here and I am ranting. I have VERY STRONG OPINIONS about airline liveries and branding.

It's okay if it'll be a billboard acronym on the side of the fuse or just PALexpress below the window line previously. But the country's name down low I find demeaning and disrespectful. :old:

United.... if you think about it, that livery is about as old as the battleship livery! Also I hope they would do away with the globe and return the tulip... I did like the globe on Continental (I'm definitely in the minority!); blue and gold make a good combo, but it just looks weird mixing the globe with the United titles....

Lastly I'd tweak Delta once more; the titles look just like United's titles. Why not go back to the previous font, and also have that slapped on the belly titles as well?

I think SAS's special livery looks "just right" (not too flashy or colorful; conservative) that it should become the main livery.

I much prefer the new tail, though I miss the bare metal. But it's always...interesting, inspiring(?) to see stand at an airport in some foreign country and look at all the international airlines proudly displaying their colours, flags and whatnot. The American flag is a great one and should be the tail of the national carrier.
