Research project: development of a pilot-centered future flight deck

Fri Jun 23, 2017 9:46 am

Hello,

My name is Johannes Werkman and I am a graduate student at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany. Currently I am working on my master thesis, which is part of a research project focusing on the development of a pilot-centered future flight deck.

This project aims to put the pilot in the center of the design process. The main goal is to create a cockpit around the pilots, which is supporting them in achieving their mission goals, while emphasizing human strengths by supporting them with what they need. By providing feedback about the current flight deck design philosophy and explaining your attitude towards it, you will have the chance to be part of the development process. Your feedback is used to guide the design process at its current stage, ensuring that pilots’ expectations and needs are considered in the future.

Therefore, if you are a commercial pilot, we would greatly appreciate your participation in the research study that will take 15 to 25 minutes to complete and is anonymous. No one will be able to identify you or your answers.

You get to the survey by clicking on the link below or entering it in your browser.

If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to ask!

Sincerely
Johannes Werkman

The survey mentioned above will be online for at least another two weeks. Unfortunately it is very difficult to find commercial pilots who fill out the survey and I am hoping to finde some in this forum. We can only include pilots' needs and expectations in the development of the future flight deck if we get some feedback.

The survey is divided in 8 section each covering a different topic:
1. General Information
2. Your current cockpit experience
3. Your attitude towards modern technology
4. Your attitude towards flight deck automation
5. Your opinion on the current interaction design in the cockpit
6. Your opinion on current display design and information presentation
7. The pilots' role and tasks on the future flight deck
8. What overall desires and goals do you have

In advance, I would like to thank all of you who participate in the survey! Your feedback will be a great help for us.
