In regards to AA/US, I've always wondered where we'd be now if HP had acquired TZ in late 2004. Certainly that deal falling through was impetus behind HP going after US less than a year later, and I don't think they would have been able to digest an acquisition and a large (at the time) merger in such quick succession.

Good point or think how different the industry might be had United and AWA megred in 1999 that AWA backed out of? That was pre Parker, the enterie indistry could have changed very differently than what eventually transpired.

If United hadn't merged with Continental, I think Continental should have merged with Alaska. (And in that scenario VX would be scooped up by B6)

But another interesting what if was the rumored HP+TW merger around 1998 or 1999.

Ahhh...but in these "what if" scenarios, it may have been entirely possible B6 or VX would have ever been born. So many things shouldn't have happened, and many that needed to. Fun to speculate though.

US was days from going under in winter of 2005 or 6. They had a week or two left.

They would have never made it to the AA merger had outside parties not intervened

The US situation is fascinating. In the late 80s they had gobbled up both PSA and Piedmont. PI was doing fairly well at the time, and there was much buzz around the fact that both PI and US were profitable at the time of the merger, so the resulting amalgamation was expected to be a boon for all concerned.

I still don't understand exactly what happened, though the industry showed great volatility, and 1989-2005 was a ~15 year stretch. Going into deregulation, US (AL) had high yields in the Northeast, and these may have largely evaporated over time, making the entire US operation less lucrative than it had appeared historically.

Do we have any US-PI insiders who can shed light on what it was like at US during these times?

in 1988 one great merger that would have given Pan AM Asian routes again was merging with Northwest. Sadly it didn't happen. NW and PA would have established a strong Atlantic and Pacific airline.

I visited the NW HDQ building at that time and they had a combined map of NW and PA routes. The NW HDQ employees were really excited.

Another interesting thought would have been if AA had purchased PA's Pacific routes, rather than UA. One thing for sure, AA knows how to run a large hub airport.

Was it 1981 or 82 that Western and Continental announced a merger? However, the DoT(?) didn't approve it and soon, CO was under attack from Lorenzo and Texas Air. The rest is history...
