Large USA Airports with no major airline hub

Mon Jun 12, 2017 5:35 pm

Dear av geeks,

I am interested in what larger airports located in the US have no major hub or medium hub. I can list a few below...

*Port Columbus (SkyBus had started an airline there, and failed massively, as they flew to small cities like New Castle, Gulfport, or Chatanooga in a fairly large aircraft (A319))
*Sacramento (Southwest has quite a few flights in and out of SMF, but it would be considered a small focus city at most)
*Jacksonville (Silver Airlines considers JAX focus city, but it is not classified as a hub)
*Indianapolis (It's a big FedEx hub, but not for any airlines)
*Pittsburgh (Former hub or USAir/US Airways, but they cut all flights after a dispute over landing fares)
*Kansas City (Was a hub of Brannif, is considered a focus city for Southwest)
*New Orleans (Never classified as a hub, or focus city for any airline)
*Austin (Never classified as a hub, or focus city for any airline)
*Boise (Was a hub for Horizon, now just treated as a medium regional airport)
*Islip (Never classified as a hub, might be considered as a tiny focus city for Southwest)

Please comment your opinions, and add any airport to this list

Good question. A few comments:

1) Columbus was a hub for America West as well as a focus city for USAir.
2) Pittsburg was once a mini hub for TWA
3) Kansas City was a hub for Eastern and TWA

Other Cities:
San Diego
Hartford

Kansas City was also a hub for YX.

Los Angeles isn't a hub and IT'S OUR SECOND LARGEST CITY!!!!

MCO (Orlando International Airport) was a hub for Eastern Airlines and then Delta Air Lines, but now it's only a focus city for Southwest and JetBlue. Delta still has a large presence though.

In a way you are correct, and in a way you are wrong

LAX is called a hub by Alaska Airlines (https://newsroom.alaskaair.com/cities-served) SCROLL THROUGH THERE LIST OF HUBS))

LAX is also called a hub by Delta Airlines (http://news.delta.com/los-angeles-international-airport)

And I believe every major US Airline flies to LAX, and some call it a focus city, and some call it a hub. But it is not like Atlanta for Delta, or Chicago for United.

MCO is a hub for Silver Airways, but I don't know if that really counts as their fleet only consists of Saabs and they're a relatively small airline.

MCO is good one, B6 and WN have large ops, as do most airlines there, but MCO is not really used as a large traffic feeder. O/D at MCO I am sure is very high. I would think that is the largest out there. Yes, LAX is argued as not a hub but given the size of DL and AA operations there, I think its safe to call LAX a hub airport.

I was thinking FLL as well, but while B6 and WN might not technically call it a hub, I think its safe to say NK does. B6 and NK are probably connecting a decent amount of traffic at FLL and WN will too with its international expansion there.
