Greatest concentration of commercial airports

Thu May 25, 2017 2:35 pm

What part of the world has the greatest concentration of commercial airports (most airports within, say, a 70 mile radius - not necessarily a secondary airport for one city - but certainly serving the same broad area).

Examples:
1. Southern Florida( MIA/FLL/PBI)
2. New England (ORH within 65 miles of PVD/BOS/MHT//BDL. Throw HYA in the mix, though 90 miles away).
3. New York (JFK/LGA/EWR/SWF)
4. SoCal (BUR/LAX/LGB/SNA)
5. SoMichigan (LAN within 65 miles of: DTW/FNT/GRR/AZO/ MBS)

Southeast England / Greater London I would say. It has:

London Heathrow
London Gatwick
London Stansted
London Luton
London Southend
London City
Southampton
Bournemouth
Manston Kent
Norwich

The southern Alps / northern Po valley in northern Italy is also an interesting one:

Turin
Lugano
Milan Malpensa
Milan Linate
Bergamo
Brescia
Verona

I know Lugano is in Switzerland but it's very close to the rest so I included it anyway.

You could pretty safely add ONT and SAN here. Maybe could even include SBA and PSP if you're feeling generous.

Unlike most of Airliners.net sometimes think, this isn't going to be in the USA, this is probably going to be a Europa location. Although some users are going to find that difficult, imaginging that there is an aviation world outsite the US.

MGL and ESS are also in that area. Neither of them got any scheduled traffic, only charters every once in a while, but they do have all the facilities.

Huh. Not so helpful or relevant to the conversation. Why waste your keystrokes with such nonsense?

Going back to the US and Florida, as you included MIA/FLL/PBI, you could say Orlando has a decent concentration of airports. You've got MCO/SFB/TPA/PIE all within about 90 minutes or so of each other. You could add JAX/DAB if you wanna be generous.

Add MLB to the Orlando area.

Sorry just read several "where would .....greatest/argest.... be" where 90% of the answers are USA based with no more consideration of some places outside the US. Was kinda frustrated, disregard the post.

I doubt you'll manage to get all of those inside a 70 mile radius circle (especially Bournemouth and Norwich) and Manston is no longer operational.

Not entirely sure what the OP means by "commercial" - even very small airfields are often run commercially - but, within 70 miles of central London we have:
Airports with scheduled passenger services:
London Ashford (Lydd)
London City
London Gatwick
London Heathrow
London Luton
London Oxford
London Stansted
London Southend
Southampton

Airports without scheduled passenger services:
Battersea Heliport
Brighton City
Cambridge
Cranfield
Farnborough
London Biggin Hill
RAF Northolt

Aerodromes:
Abingdon
Brimpton
Chalgrove
Clacton
Connington
Cottered
Deanland
Denham
Dunsfold
Earls Colne
Elmsett
Enstone
Fairoaks
Goodwood
Great Oakley
Headcorn (Lashenden)
Hinton-in-the-Hedges
Holmbeck Farm
Hunsdon
Kenley
Keyston
Lasham
Little Gransden
London Elstree
Maypole
Nayland
North Weald
Old Warden
Pent Farm
Popham
Rayne Hall Farm
Redhill
Redlands
Rochester
Rougham
Shotteswell
Solent
Stapleford
Sywell
Thurrock
Turweston
Wethersfield
White Waltham

And I'm sure that I have probably missed quite a few.

You can maximize the New York market by drawing a 70 mile radius around the township of Plainfield, NJ:
Let's call this the "PA - NJ - NY metropolitan area" and it includes

JFK (New York John F Kennedy)
LGA (New York LaGuardia)
EWR (Newark Liberty)
HPN (White Plains)
SWF (Newburgh Stewart)
ISP (Islip)
TTN (Trenton)
ABE (Allentown Lehigh Valley)
PHL (Philadelphia Int'l)

those would be 9 airports with scheduled passenger service, on top of that there are a few more G/A airports, among them really busy ones like Morristown (MMU) or Teterboro (TEB)

Also, in Southern Germany, if you draw your 70 mile radius around the town of Speyer (which coincidentally happens have a rather busy G/A airfield too), you will get a total of 8 commercial airports in the mix:

FRA (Frankfurt Int'l)
STR (Stuttgart)
FKB (Karlsruhe - Baden Baden)
SCN (Saarbrücken)
SXB (Strasbourg)
HHN ("Frankfurt" Hahn)
ZQW (Zweibrücken)
MHG (Mannheim)

Not a bad number either, on top of that there are G/A fields like the aforementioned Speyer (EDRY) and prominently Frankfurt-Egelsbach (QEF/EDFE) as well as Rammstein and Spangdahlem USAF airports.
