What are the shortest widebody flights regularly operated?

Thu May 18, 2017 5:30 am

Hi all,

Over the past few weeks whilst looking at where planes I'd just been on had previously been, I've noticed two widebodies on rather short flights. Although not uncommon, this got me wondering what the shortest regular flights were. The two I encountered are:

Boeing 747-400 - China Airlines TPE-OKA 656km (and took only 55 minutes on 16th May according to flight radar)
Airbus A330-300 - Cathay Dragon CAN-HKG 136km (but averages 35 minutes thanks to a huge detour south of Hong Kong before landing)

One other interesting one, though this won't be permanent, is KE using their new Dreamliners on flights to Jeju.

Boeing 787-9 - Korean Air GMP-CJU 450km (and took only 42 minutes this morning)

Any other interesting short flights to add? I was particularly surprised by the 747 on a sub-hour flight.

UA regularly runs a 789 between SFO and LAX on scheduled service. It is for reposition purposes but is a revenue flight. That flight is around 50-55 minutes.

Until recently HA was running a 332 between HNL and KOA. I've been on a 763 between HNL and OGG too. Plane continued on to PDX if memory serves.

Again not record breaking but you'll find several 332s on QF's MEL-SYD service which is about 700km

GMP-CJU is probably one of the most traveled routes on earth. Both KE and OS regularly send their WBs there, KE B744/B772s and OS B763s are not uncommon.

EK flies the A380 daily between DOH and DXB. Even shorter is QR service between DOH and BAH (150 km) which sees regular widebodies - 777, 330, etc. Some days you even have the A346 of QR doing DOH - DMM.

SIN-KUL sees SQ 333 and 350, 3 flights per day, for 300km flight or between 40 to 50 mins.

Technically you cannot actually book between BON & CUR on either of those flights, they do not have the 5th freedom rights to carry pax solely from BON to CUR and vice-versa. The shortest bookable flight would have to be the SKB-ANU on British Airways 777, 100km length.

A bit off-topic, but I once flew on a revenue flight (National 727) from Newport News VA to Norfolk. Distance is 20 miles.

RUN-MRU is a very short flight( 231 km) and MK and UU use many widebodies on that route.

BOM-PNQ by 9W is regularly flown by a 737 however thrice in September 2016, it was flown by an A330. Flying time is about 35-40 minutes. It's only 120 km
9W can connect the world through NMIA
