If L.A. had a second major airport..

The L.A. area is a pretty big metropolis and yet it only has one major airport , LAX, with a few smaller airports scrattered around, BUR, LGB etc. NYC on the ither hand has two major airports serving the city EWR and JFK (not sure if LGA counts as a major intl airport).

So my question is, if L.A. were to have a second major airport, where would if be located? And would it be worth it to have two major airports serving L.A?

That's because LAX is very cheap for an airport that size, so cheap that other airports in the region can hardly compete. Why fly into a secondary airport if you can fly into a major airport for the same amount of money? Sure if LAX were more expensive you'd see the other airports grow at the cost of LAX.

I believe this situation is unique in the world, mostly the smaller airports are far cheaper than the expensive big ones but in L.A. that's not the case.

@ PatrickZ80 - just curious what you mean by very cheap....are you referring to air fares?

I assumed he meant the costs to the airlines flying there -- landing fees, gate rental fees, etc.

That's indeed what I meant, and indirect this has influence on the air fares too. The less handling costs the airlines have to pay to the airport, the cheaper they can offer the flights.
