1977: Allegheny Air promotion: $145 for one week of unlimited flights

That would be about $600 today. If you could fly unlimited for $600 in a week, where would you go?

(Mind you - they had a regional presence).

Here are the flights I took in 1979 on that fare over March break. By that time it was called the Allegheny Liberty Fare and the fare was $179.00. It only included US and not Canada. You had to book the flights before you left which I did in person at an Allegheny ticket office. It was fun combing through the Allegheny schedule to figure all this out.

Great stuff! How about marking the a/c types next to each flight?

I have the 9/5/1979 timetable, which is the last AL timetable before the 10/28 name change. Flights 1-299 are listed as operated by 727-100 and DC-9-30 aircraft, flights 350-499 are listed as operated by BAC-111 aircraft, and 500-999 were commuter flights operated by N262, DH6 Twin Otter, Shorts 330, Beach 99, M298, Metro's, and DeHavilland Heron's.

Using that information, BOS-PHL and JFK-PIT were 111's. The MEM flights stopped in BNA each way to/from PHL. The PIT-IAH flight stopped in CMH.

While inflation is 4x, income has only a little over doubled, so income adjusted inflation is over 7x. So $1000 for a week of regional flying isn't that enticing.

Here is the exact log. A few flight changes from the original reservation. The PIT-IAH flight had a stop in SDF.

If you were travelling on the Unlimited Fare you most likely connected through PIT a bunch of times. That rotunda at the end was jammed packed with people when all the gates were occupied.

Here's a direct link to the cities served by Allegheny in 1979.

Does anybody else remember the 'round trip' tickets available on the US majors that were only available outside the country ?

My first trip to the US in about 1980 I paid a flat fare for a certain number of sectors - memory says £160 - on TWA. The only restriction was that if you headed westbound to start, and turned eastwards you had to continue eastward and could not zig-zag back and forth. I flew LGA-ORD-DEN-SFO-LAX-LAS-MIA-LGA. Even when the MIA-LGA flight was cancelled, I was rebooked on EA.

I don't remember the exchange rate, but that seems even better value than the original post, although I suppose I should include Freddie Laker's fare to JFK !

Even more recently, B6 had the "All You Can Jet" pass which I believe started at $599 and lasted for a month. I believe the twitter, facebook, instagram, blogs and other social media outlets had the hashtag of #AYCJ.

American Airlines had AAirpass. IIRC, $15,000 would get you confirmed travel with few restrictions. It has not been available for about 15-20 years, though. Does anyone else remember it & have more details?

In the late 1960s, Trans-Texas had a "weekend fare" (Saturday-Sunday) for unlimited travel -- $25, if memory serves! Seems like Texas International had a similar "unlimited flights for X days" in the 1970s.

How about the 1970s/1980s Eastern Airlines $323 (or whatever it was) Unlimited Mileage Fare. Fairly restrictive in some regards with stopovers, etc but really good value at the time. I think it was good for up to 21 days. Vaguely remember it...there have got to be others here who remember.

AA took a bAAth on the unlimited AAirpass. I've always found it fascinating that someone actually thought giving unlimited travel for life was a smart idea...

True...a lot of money but as an enthusiast I could try to fly a lot of places in the USA during a week.
