Things that USED to take up room in your bag

Fri Apr 14, 2017 12:46 am

What did you used to travel with that is obsolete now?

1/2 my checked luggage used to be cassette tapes and Walkman speakers.
Lots of rolls of film.
Magazines. They weighed a ton.
A 20 pound laptop
A phone cord to plug into an external modem
Lots of transformer plugs (those huge bricks to convert electricity)

Used to carry full-sized toiletries, but now, everything's 3oz or compact. Saves a ton of room.

Somewhat bulky, plug-in computer speakers for the hotel room. The sound quality now available in little rechargeable bluetooth speakers in pretty impressive.

A coat (light raincoat+sweater), second pair of (formal) shoes, paperwork, laptop (phone+8 inch tablet is enough) Office365, stuff you seldom need you can buy.

Smartphones deleted camera, discman, agenda, PDA, calculator, alarmclock, background info, maps.

.. still I do some serious printing of all kind of stuff/ notebook for if the phone gets lost, stolen, wet, locked, whatever.

Rolls of 35 mm film and my old camera in the days before digital cameras. Walkman, cassettes, magazine and book, all now replaced by my Smart phone and laptop. And spare batteries for my camera and Walkman, now replaced by chargers and power supplies.

I miss being able to carry home bottles of precious liquor/wine in my carry-on. It was so much simpler than the lengths I now go, to protecting bottles for travel in checked bags. There's not much high-end mezcal in Canada, and definitely none at a decent price. :drunk:

It's interesting to see how your packing habits change, even excluding some of these things. I used to stuff a checked bag for relatively short trips. Now there are very few trips where I would take more than a carry on and an iPad.

Tablet and smart phone has replaced a very heavy laptop. Also I no longer carry a road atlas with me.

Ain't that the truth! My Surface Pro 4 replaced my 17.3" laptop when I travel now. I took my laptop with me on a few Australia to USA flights and what a pain it was to travel with. Now my Surface and camera gear fit in my backpack with no problems.

LOL...I remember those 17.3" screens too that seemed to weigh as much as a television set!

I'm still taking my laptop with me everywhere I go. It isn't the newest model anymore, but it's enough for me. Couldn't do without it.

What I'm not taking anymore is an overload of clothing (just enough for what I need). Also I'm not taking full-size toiletries with me anymore, all small travel-size. Anything liquid like toothpaste or sunscreen I buy at my destination and leave behind when I go home.

Printed boarding passes are also history here, got my phone for that.

We used to strap a folding canvas chair to each of two checked bags for our birdwatching vacation trips.

Nowadays I still take a 12-cup Mr. Coffee coffeepot, can of coffee and box of Splenda. Mr.Coffee has been on a couple of transcons with me along with a big thermos.

Jp airline fleets book.

More recently a slr camera with lenses. Got a powerful compact that does most of what the slr does plus a bit more in some cases but a bit of a trade off but saves the weight and size of the bag.

A Gameboy and batteries for it. There's games on my cellphone.
Printed airline timetables.
All those souvenir brochures that end up in the trash when you get home.
A laptop and the cords that go with it. Replaced by a 7-inch tablet.
Headsets. Earbuds do the trick.
Newspapers.

Address book, the dayplanner style and Thomas Guides.

I still prefer the MacBook Pro along with the iPad and iPhone.

A thick inflight handbook, boarding jacket, serving jacket, dress shirts, vest, uniform pants, pouch with wine opener, extra liquor seals, spare flashlight, spare watch, small scissors. I'm a retired F/A who commuted. :D

A Sony Discman and a bunch of CDs. And it was a big dilemma trying to decide which CDs to bring.

If I'm traveling for work I still have to bring my laptop, but if I'm going on vacation my smartphone is good enough for anything I might want to do on the internet.

I actually bought an SLR camera last year, so my camera actually takes up more space in my bag than it used to. But I only bother bringing it if I'm going on a "big" trip. If I'm just going to visit family or something I'll just use my phone camera.
