Longest day: is it possible to have a 48 hour day?

Mon Apr 03, 2017 12:11 am

More than once, I have thought about how it’d be fun to “extend” a day (birthday, anniversary, etc.) by traveling westward around the world. While I found several threads about the skipping days or longest international flights or other related topics, I didn’t find anything specifically about trying to maximize the length of the day. I originally thought that it wouldn’t be necessary to change hemispheres, but a routing from HND-FRA-ORD-ANC arrived around 8pm, so I knew there was some room to play with. I switched to going through Singapore, and found the following based on online timetables and websites:

NH 843 – 7:15 total flying time
HND – SIN, 00:10-06:35

SQ 308 – 13:20 total flying time
SIN – LHR, 09:00-15:40

NZ 001 – 11:10 total flying time
LHR – LAX, 16:15-19:25

AA 109 – 6:07 total flying time
LAX – HNL, 19:40-10:47

This routing would be 37:52 of flying time, with 4:38 either in transit or at the origin and destination, for a total length of day of 42:30, almost two days (I apologize if I made any mistakes, please feel free to correct and update if necessary). I know that some of the layovers are completely unreasonable (a 15 minute international connection at LAX, ha!), but is there another routing, either more or less feasible, that could increase the time of the one day? It would be really interesting if 48 hours could be achieved.

Or you can eastbound and cross the International Date Line which would allow you to arrive earlier in the same day, then go westward.

Here is my first attempt. This is 43 hours, with pretty reasonable layovers. Some lay over time (between AMS and OSL) I may be able to cut, but I also found the max time by going from Tokyo to Hawaii so far.

ANA 203, HND-FRA 0:50 - 6:00 (12:10 flying time)

KLM 1762, FRA-AMS 7:00-8:10 (1:10 flying time)

KLM 1145, AMS-OSL 11:50-13:35 (1:45 flying time)

ICE 319, OSL-KEF 14:45-15:25 (2:40 flying time)

ICE 681, KEF-SEA 17:00-17:45 (7:45 flying time)

AS 145, SEA-HNL 19:20-22:33 (6:13 flying time)

Total of 31:43 in the air
Total of 11:17 not in the air

Total: 43:00 hrs

Here we go, I got 45 hours and 40 minutes. I think I'm too tired to try and beat this using the date line trick!

Malaysia 132, AKL-KUL, 0:05-7:30, 11:25 flying time

Dragonair 726, KUL-HKG, 9:00-12:55, 3:55 flying time

Korean 614, HKG-ICN, 14:05-18:45, 3:30 flying time

Korean 11, ICN-LAX, 20:00-15:10, 11:10 flying time

Air Tahiti 7, LAX-PPT, 16:25-21:45, 8:20 flying time

Adding the 4 mins in the morning at AKL, few hours at night in PPT, and layovers, total is 45:40.

You can do a 47+ hour day with a single flight from Auckland to Niue:

Saturday 0000 to 0920 in Auckland (9hr 20m)
Fly for 3hr 45m
Friday 1345 to Saturday 2359 in Niue (34hr 15m)
= 47hr 20m

...although this option does mean that technically you go back to Friday, I'm not sure if that disqualifies it.

If so then the next best option I can come up with using the date line is a single flight from Nadi to Honolulu:

Sunday 0000 to 1710 in Fiji (17hr 10m)
Fly for 6hr 05m
Sunday 0140 to 2359 in Hawaii (22hr 20m)
= 45hr 35m

To really take advantage, this should be planned when the clocks change in the spring!

Would it not be better when the clocks change in the Autumn?

You gain an hour in Autumn and lose one in Spring.

I seem to remember someone mentioned a similar thing when Concorde was flying...having two New Year's parties... one in London and one in NY?..

Yeah, I don't count the first one because you land on a different date. To count, all departures and arrivals should be on the same date.

That being said, the Fiji to Hawaii option is legit.

Although not possible legally, but here is a way to extend your day to 47 hours 55 minutes.

Spend Friday full day on Big Diomede island (Russian territory). At 23:55 hrs take a speed boat from big diomede island to small diomede island (US territory). The distance is 2 miles. you arrive at Small diomede at midnight and welcome Friday. Spend the entire day there.

The diomede islands (Big and small) are in the Bering strait and the Intl date line passes between them. In peak winter it may be possible to walk across the frozen sea ice.

Yep that is possible since you have 5 hours of time difference and a flight time of roughly 3:30hrs so you still have over an hour to get from JFK to Times Square for the ball drop ;)

I also heard about TPAC flights that leave their origin airports (HND was mentioned and SYD as far as I remember) shortly after midnight (1:00am January 1st for example) and arrive at SFO/LAX late afternoon December 31st so that way you can celebrate New Years' twice, too.

Well all you need to do is find flights from the time zone closest to the international date line to the left to the time zone closest to the IDL to the right that leave and depart the same day, it doesn't matter if you leave at 00:10, fly for 47h50 and arrive at 23:50 the same day or if you leave at 09:00, fly for 30 hours and arrive at 13:00. The day will still be 47:59 mins long (actually longer, because there are more then 24 time zones). The issue is finding flights that 1) leave and arrive same day and 2) actually go to these crazy far time zones. Finding a way from the line islands to bakers island or how land island would be ideal and give you your 49:59 day, but that would be tough to find flights.

Update: I found something. It totally cheats because you leave, arrivé the day before, and leave again the next day arriving the same day, but it results in a kind of 48:59 day.
So you have 00:00-07:30 in CXI, take Fiji 822 CXI-HNL arriving 10:45 the day before, have a 30 hour layover, then leave 16:45 the original day on HA465, a 767, arriving in Pago Pago at 21:30 the same day and have 21:30-23:59. Pretty cool!
