Cheapest "around the world" within 8 days

Sun Mar 19, 2017 2:02 pm

I thought it would be funny to see how much it would cost to fly "around the world", so I went and made some dummy bookings. Managed to get around the world for € 1.331,91. The whole trip would take 8 days. Of course this is assumed all flights are on time and you don't have any luggage. Also costs for meals and hotels are not included.

This is my trip:

Leg 1: Norwegian DY 7209 Copenhagen - Bangkok Suvarnabhumi 16-9-2017 € 246,70
Leg 2: Free shuttle bus Bangkok Suvarnabhumi - Bangkok Don Mueang 17-9-2017 € 0,00
Leg 3: Thai Air Asia X XJ 610 Bangkok Don Mueang - Osaka 17-9-2017 € 155,01
Leg 4: Air Asia X D7 1 Osaka - Honolulu 18-9-2017 € 398,33
Leg 5: Allegiant G4 571 Honolulu - Las Vegas 20-9-2017 € 198,33
Leg 6: Spirit NK 954 Las Vegas - Oakland 21-9-2017 € 50,46
Leg 7: Level (unknown flight number) Oakland - Barcelona 22-9-2017 € 186,00
Leg 8: Norwegian D8 5570 Barcelona - Copenhagen 24-9-2017 € 97,00
Together that makes € 1.331,91.

See if anyone can beat me. The rules are simple. You're free on when to go, but it has to be possible. You're free to choose your airport of departure, but you have to arrive there within 8 days. You can go either eastbound or westbound around the world. Make dummy bookings to see the price. Lowest price wins.

Thank you! That's very interesting! I'll have to start working and see what I can do from the NYC area in the US. I don't understand your Leg 7. Is there such a flight?

Yes, there is. Level is that new LCC of IAG, operated by Iberia. They haven't started operations yet, but it's bookable already. However the Level website doesn't give you any flight numbers on the flights.

You don't have to pick your home airport as starting point, it can be anything as long as you depart and arrive there. You're completely free on what flights you pick and where to make your transfers.

I just saw a thread about Level in the Civil Aviation forum and came back here to update my question, but thanks!!!!

Except that I may try to talk my wife into actually doing it, so if I'm doing the planning it might as well be something useful. Obviously, we'll spend more than 8 days, but the routing would still be valid. This isn't an entirely intellectual exercise for me. I'm jonesing for lots of air travel.

Define "around the world"? Obviously prices will vary depending upon your point of origin. For example, starting in Europe at a low-cost airport is immediately more advantageous than from starting from LHR.

Also, define how many stops and in which countries these stops must be - for example should it include a stop in the Southern Hemisphere?

You have to level the playing field before asking others to play... :D
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

That's why you are allowed to pick your own point of origin, you're not bound to anything. Pick any airport you like anywhere in the world. How many stops and in which countries? That's up to you to decide. As long as you pass each longitude at least once it's ok. That's what I meant with "around the world". Start with going east and keep going east until you're back where you started from. Going west is also allowed of course.

I did just this in January for the fun of it over a long weekend: PHX-JFK-FRA-SIN-SFO-PHX. It cost about US $1300. PHX-SFO was on B6 and SQ on one itinerary and SFO-PHX was a separate AA ticket. This is not a click/bait to a website I get paid for hits...it is my website I post my flight log/photos to...just in case you want to see a brief of the trip.

I'm actually flying around the world in April.
Routing is: SXF - SVO - HAN - LPQ (Luang Prabang) - VTE (Vientiane) - HAN - SGN - MNL - SFO - LAX - SFO - BOS - LIS - TXL.
It's not the same departure and arrival airport but it's both in Berlin so let's say that counts :D
Without the detours to LAX and Laos I paid around 850€ (don't ask for exact prices per flight because I don't remember them) on Aeroflot, Lao Airlines, Vietjet, Phillipines Airlines, Delta, JetBlue and TAP. That's quite a bargain I guess considering that I have checked baggage on every flight. Note that it's not a true around the world trip as I'm not going to the Southern Hemisphere. A week before that I fly WLG - AKL - OOL - KUL - COK - AUH - CDG - TXL though, that should make up for it ;)

HKG-DOH QR B788
DOH-LHR QR A388

All for around £850 - am looking to book !!

Managed to get the cheapest posted so far, methinks, by a few euros:

TOTAL COST: 898 EUR

Leg 1: 9/8 Finnair AY3272 BCN-HEL
Leg 2: 9/9 Finnair AY99 HEL-HKG
------Overnight in HKG-----
Leg 3: 9/11 JAL JL7052 HKG-KIX
Leg 4: 9/11 JAL JL60 KIX-LAX
------Three nights in LA-----
Leg 5: 9/14 Level IB2624 LAX-BCN

Cost:
Legs 1+2 - 298 EUR from Finnair website
Legs 3+4 - 461 EUR from CheapoAir (slightly more expensive if booked direct)
Leg 5 - 139 EUR from flylevel.com

While perhaps not as exciting as some of the exotic LCC options listed above, this itinerary might be a bit comfier! Also, oddly enough, it does keep you on OW the whole time. By optimizing on dates and whatnot, could probably bring the total duration down (elminating pesky 3 night stay in LA) as well as cost.

June 2010, Delta were selling a one off NRT-SEA flight on a 757.
My good buddy and I ,Cedarjet, flew out from LHR on a NH773, arriving at NRT approx. 3 hours before the Scheduled NRT-SEA DL 757.
The trouble became apparent when we walked up to the DL desk to check in for the flight, only to be told that it had been canx..!!!!!
In the end we jumped on a AA 772 in F to ORD.... then straight back onto LHR in F again....
All done on NRSA travel.
Total routing was LHR-NRT-ORD-LHR....
Door to door was around 36 hrs...
Cost.... cheap.

very good fun.

This doesn't count, it happened in the 70s, but it was pretty cool. Pan Am had an offer of a 1st class round the world offer for $5,000. You had to go in one direction only, no backtracking. You could spend as much time on any location as you wanted and then move on. Not sure what 5K in the 70s translates into today, but it must be substantially more.

All those historic flights don't count indeed, we're looking for what's bookable right now. Not in the past.

Starting in Egypt sounds like a good idea, but the route back isn't necessarily "one of the cheapest."
