What is the "highest" and "lowest" registration you can find?

Sat Mar 18, 2017 12:06 am

Hi everyone!

I've often thought to myself what would be the highest and lowest registration values, if each letter is given a value of 1-26 based on their placement in the alphabet and letters retained their value. For example, N185UA would be 14+1+8+5+21+1=49 and G-BYGC would be 7+2+25+7+3=44.

My criteria is normally airline-only, but feel free to post any private aircraft as well.

The lowest I can think of off the top of my head is B-2001, a China Eastern 777-300ER, which gives a total of 5 points. Meanwhile on the other end of the spectrum, South African A330-200 ZS-SXZ is hard to beat with 114 points. Does anyone know a lower/higher?

If you're incredibly bored you can also dig up the highest/lowest from your flight log. Mine would be 788 CC-BBD (14) on one end and 77W 9V-SWM (86) on the other, with A320 G-EZWX and 752 TF-ISZ (85) running close behind. ;)

regards!
Sveinn :)

5 is pretty low indeed, but I found the closest thing I think. Air Botswana A2-ABB (ATR42) with only 8 points it's pretty low. Unfortunately this plane is not around anymore.

If a blimp counts, the Goodyear blimp if i remember is N10 or something along the lines of that.

Still that would make 15 since N alone is already 14. 14+1+0=15. The lowest registration can therefor never be an American registration. Still I think N10 is the lowest American registration possible, but foreign aircraft can go lower.

Mind blown someone would think of this lol

If only airliners count. as there are SAA A320's ZS-RZY & Z, they automatic beat it at 115 & 116 pts. There is a microlight in NZ ZK-ZZZ which is 115 pts. There is a Pitts Special ZS-UZZ which is 118 pts, but I think the winner is ZS-ZXZ a Bellanca Scout at 121 pts.

The Taiwan Air Force had a 737-400 with civilian reg of B-10001 which is 4 pts. AIDC of Taiwan have an IAI Astra B-20001 which is the same 5 pts. Likewise Civil Air Transport also used to have a DC4 B-1002.

By the math that would be 14+1 which would be the same.
