min connecting time at HKG and choice of airline on CGK-HKG

Thu Mar 16, 2017 9:47 pm

Hi all,

KQ861 departs at 21:10 from HKG, and I will arrive from CGK.
Some interesting LCC flights arrive at 18 ish ( what is the best/difference between Tiger Air and Air Asia btw?) meaning a ~3h window, is it enough?
otherwise Garuda direct flight costs more the double or other flights leave at 4 or 6 am ( MH or Malindo), which is quite early for my liking, so probably the last options...
I will have a luggage on the hold!
What would you do? what are the on time performances of Air Asia and Tiger?

Many thanks
Fly with Air Burundi, Air Tanzania, Air Uganda, Kenya Airways and Rwandair...Jumuiya ya Afrika mashariki

Hi, minimum connection time at Hong Kong appears to be in the 45 to 60 minute range. By this, I mean that CX will allow bookings that give a 45-minute connection time. I have managed to make a connection in 15 minutes in Hong Kong, but my luggage didn't make the connection. However, in this case I was on a through-ticket on CX, and the airline had a person waiting at the gate to escort us to our connecting flights.

A 3-hour window should be fine. Hong Kong airport is generally very well organized and has excellent infrastructure for transfers. However, if you're flying in on an LCC, you may not be able to check your luggage through. In this case, you will need to go through passport control to claim your baggage, and depending on the time of your arrival, the queues for passport control at HKG can be long.

For on-time performance, I can't comment on the airlines you've asked about, but from experience, evening arrivals into HKG can be significantly delayed due to traffic controls, especially if there have been delays in China that have backed up during the day.

Have you looked into CX's pricing? It would be better (I think) to fly on a carrier that has an interline agreement with KQ and that will allow you to book your baggage through to NBO.

I would also say that depending on the time of day the lines at immigration at HKG can take 1 - 1.5 hours, so in that case even a three hour window, especially with an LCC (especially with TR, which is notorious for delays), may not be enough.

I have never needed more than 20 minutes to get through HK immigration. I would imagine it would be no big deal to get through immigration and customs (with your bag) in an hour or so. So then that gives you plenty of time to recheck with TR or AirAsia.

No huge difference between the two in my limited experience - just go with whichever works best in terms of schedule/price. TR's pre-ordered meals seem to be more expensive than Air Asia (though this could've just been a one off). Will never forget how good the chicken curry I've had on AirAsia out of DPS is - best $4 in flight meal I'll ever have!

It also depends on your Nationality and passport - if you need a visa to enter HongKong it will take time...

It depends an your time and Nationality (read visa), but you can take easily a flight to BKK, SIN or KUL on one "exotic" airline, pick up your luggage and continue your way on an other "exotic" airline or even 5th freedom carrier...

Have been to HKG several times, and when I was lucky I got stuck about an hour just to show passport, prior to luggage retrieve. Some times it took about 2+ hours just for it. Keep in mind

Even with an American or a European passport it can take up to an hour or an hour and a half. It depends on the time of day you arrive.

Thanks for your feedbacks, much appreciated!
So far, I'm eyeing Air Asia for the moment...
Outside the Immigration queues, does it take longer to deplane from a LCC than a regular?

You can fly between CGK and KUL with KLM B777 - connecting to Air Asia in KUL. Or TigerAir to SIN connecting onto UA to HKG. Or you go to BKK - connecting onto RJ, EK or even KQ to HKG...
