Reason for your Favourite aircraft bias?

Fri Feb 03, 2017 8:44 pm

We all have a favourite aircraft type/make for one reason or another! Wondering why that is! For me it's Boeing and their 737 and 747 families. The 737 is just so old school and cool, the type has jus always been so versatile, like the swiss army knife of civil airliners and the nose section is very aesthetically appealing, while the 747 is the (imho) most beautiful aircraft ever put to paper and from the -100 to the SP to the -8, it has always done it's job in style! The case could also be made for the A340-500, it's huge Trents really look the part against its shorter fuselage! :)

What's your favourite? No need to bash types or other people's opinion, just here to discuss everyone's favourite jet! :D
Airbuses are good. Boeings are Gooder.

I like Airbus, they provide for lots of jobs in Hamburg, where I used to live but in the end, I've flown so much Boeing in my life, that I'm a Boeing guy. In my personal stats of planes I've flown most, six out of ten aircraft were Boeing, incuding the MD-11. The other four in that top ten are two Airbus (A320/A321), one Fokker 70 and a Douglas DC-10-30.

I do not have a favourite manufacturer any more. More than 10 years ago, I used to have a slight preference for Boeing, but the management kind of screwed this preference to the point that I really don't care anymore, whether it is Boeing or Airbus, you kind of learn to deal with it.

Regarding narrow bodies, I like the A320 family more than the 737, definitely from a pilots and passengers perspective. Since they are equipped with sharklets, I like them aesthetically as well (but I hate that term - sharklets - couldn't they really have come up with a better name?).

However, I think the 787 is one of the best looking airliners flying around. I don't like the looks of the A350/A380 at all. My experience with these widebodies is kind of limited to just see them taxiing by.

From an engineering point of view, I find Boeing's environment more logical.

Love sitting in one of the front rows of the MD-80. Very low noise level and close to the ground during taxi. Also enjoy the ERJ-135/145 because of the single seat on the left side and the big windows. Fokker 70 and Fokker 100 are nice treats as well. Great memories also come from my four MD-11 flights and one Tu-154 trip.

I also like the MD-80, and its siblings the MD-90 and 717. Aesthetically, they're some of the few planes still flying that look really different, that even a casual observer can identify. Apart from RJs, almost everything else has a conventional tail and two engines mounted under the wings. And I have to admit part of my reason for liking them is precisely because they're not as common, sort of rooting for the underdog you might say.

For flights of more than 3.5 hours I really like the 2-4-2 or 2-3-2 layout of the 767 and A330 for pure comfort level and both aircraft to me look very balanced inside and out. I'm not brand blinded by the A vs B brand fights I've seen here on A-Net.

I'll have to admit I have a spot in my heart for the 727 as it was the first plane I few on PSA in the 70s and traveled extensively with my parents into the late 80s. Once I went to college it was 767s, DC10s and MD-80s for me (American Airlines). I just took a Delta MD-88 last week for a quick hop out of Atlanta upgraded to FC and I forgot how quiet it is up there.

The 757 was/is my favorite. I lived in both Atlanta and Miami, and had many, many trips on Eastern and Delta. It truly is a great aircraft.

Lived in Socal as a kid in the 80's, but was shipped to ATL every summer (as a UM) non stop on Lockheed L1011's. There was nothing like landing in ATL, witnessing hundreds of other Delta jets, and seeing my grandfather at the end of the jetway waiting for me. *lump*

Flew ATL-HNL non stop on (again, UM), and the flight crew gave me a flight plan of some sort if hand drawn flight plan. I kick myself to this day for not keeping track of it. :(

Currently it's the 757. There isn't another aircraft the looks or sounds like it. I fly it daily in the simulator. Can be a cattle truck on the longer hauls, but I think it's simply beautiful. Or was in OG widget livery. ;)

I think it is the 77W. That is the plane that takes me from Sydney to the US to see family.

The 747 will always be my favorite aircraft particularly the 744 as it was the aircraft I grew up and flew on them for most of my first long haul flights. If we're to get even more specific, then Wunala Dreaming (OEJ) is one that will always hold a special memory for me. I flew on Wunala back in 2006 from SYD-LAX and that memory has always stuck with me despite flying often and on many different regs and types. As the 747 slowly disappears from our skies, I really like the 77W/A350. I think both are exceptionally good looking aircraft and most of my long haul flying is done on 77Ws, soon to include the A350 once CX start sending them to YVR and other destinations.

The A330 is my favourite aircraft. There's just something about it I love. Maybe it's the fact I've flown with it for the majority of my recent travels.

I just love the sleek, sharp nose that it has. I can see Airbus is trying to wipe that away with their newer aircraft such as the A350 and A320NEO, both featuring more rounded noses, like the A380. Which is also why I love it. The fact that it has different exterior characteristics compared to other Airbus fleet such as the wingtip, the nose, the slightly angled-look of the fuselage on the rear. Gotta give kudos to Airbus for that. Such a reliable piece of work.

I fell in love with the 717 the first time I flew it. Yes, the similarities to the MD80/90 are there but there are subtle differences that just make the 717 a better experience for me. And it's not just about the airline that flies it. I flew over 50 segments on them during their AirTran career, and preferred them to the 73G. I've flown about a dozen segments on them since they moved over to Delta and now that they're flying alongside their MadDog sisters, I still prefer the 717 to the older MDs although I will go out of my way to fly an MD88 over a 737 or A320.

Mine is the A340 because of how unique I think it is. I love the pear-shaped front of the 747, which puts it in 2nd place for me. I'm in love with how comfortable and beautiful A321s are. It kills me to say whether I prefer them with wingtip fences or sharklets. I don't know why but I prefer flying with wingtip-fence A321s in Europe but to Asia I'd prefer sharklets. I used to prefer sharklets to Africa but last time I flew in Africa it was a wingtip-fence A321 which makes me have 2nd thoughts. I know my thinking and logic is very weird and makes zero sense..!

My favorite has always been the DC-10/MD-11. They're just so distinctive and well proportioned. Plus I love any plane that's a tri-jet.

My second favorite is the Embraer E-Jets. Yes, they're generic and not all that exciting to look at, but they are simply the most comfortable narrow body to fly on. I will go out of my way to fly on an E-jet over a 737 or a320. 2-2 is so much better than 3-3.

My favorite is the A330-300. When I was a kid we flew to Europe for vacation and to visit family every few years. After the first time flying on the US A333 back in 2003, I thought it was such an awesome plane (because of the then relatively rare PTVs...and it was a "big" plane). Nowadays I appreciate the comfortable seating layout, quiet cabin, and IMHO great looks. Also love the engine sounds of both the T700 and PW4000.

I love the long, sleek, clean lines of the 757-300. It looks like a bird sticking out its neck as it flies. Plus, it's a 757, so it's basically a civilian rocket.

My favorite bird is still the 744, if for no other reason than getting to see the cockpit aboard an SQ LAX-NRT flight in 2000.

Same reason here. Growing up in Sweden and having family in Los Angeles meant spending most school breaks flying between ARN and LAX. Back then most non stop EU-LAX flights were flown with 747-400s which explains my love for that bird. I got to fly on the 747-400 for the first time at an age of one year, and ever since the love has stayed strong. With close to 50 flights on the 747-400 I still seek out the the old bird whenever I can. My last flight was just two days ago (BA SAN-LHR) and have the next one coming up in a couple of weeks (BA LHR-LAX).

Airbus A330: good seating layout throughout the plane. 2-4-2 in economy and wide enough to fit my favorite business seat (1-2-1 Zodiac and B/E Super Diamond) with reasonable capacity

Boeing 767: 2-3-2 seating is best economy layout of any widebody plane.

Boeing 787: I like the bigger windows, electronic shades, higher humidity, and relative quiet flight. This plane also gave my hometown its first overseas flight (BA AUS-LHR), hence my username.

Embraer E-Jet (170/175/190/195): My favorite narrow body. 2-2 economy seating beats other narrow bodies; plus I like the solo seats in first class.

I guess my favourite would be the A340. Four engines, and a comfortable 2-4-2 in economy. It's always nice to have the option of a 2 seat block - it's a shame it's disappearing from so many aircraft these days. Purely from an aesthetic viewpoint my favourite is the A345, but I'd take any of the family. I've always enjoyed my flights on them (except one, thank you Air Canada).

From the passenger perspective of someone who does a bit of long haul flying (UK-NZ, flight lengths typically 10 hours plus), I am a fan of the A380. It's quiet and generally comfortable, and depending on the airline, you can often get an economy seat in the nose. As a passenger I would prefer this in almost every case to sitting down the back of a noisy 3-4-3 777. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate what the 777 can do for airlines, however my experiences of them have in general not been so positive.

An honorable mention for the 747-400 - my most flown aircraft, and still a legend.

Boeing 747-400 - it's the jumbo. Four engines, sexy body, winglets and the stretched upper deck... just perfect.
Boeing 757-200 - unfortunately never flown on one so far but it's the aircraft with the most beautiful proportions of any airliner around. Perfect length, perfect fitted wings (especially with winglets) and a very cute nose.
Airbus A340-300 - again four engines and sleek looks. Besides that, from passenger view the best standard-cabin of any LR-Airliner (same goes for A330).
ATR72 - cute little prop, sometimes feels like a roller coaster to ride on and I just love watching the propeller work.

My favourites are:

Concorde - Because it's freaking Concorde, it looks awesome, sounds awesome, is a technical marvel and is genuinely inspiring. At the time, everyone looked up to watch it fly over. You don't really get that anymore.

A330 - I just love the way it looks, very elegant in its movement as well, and the 2-4-2 arrangement is the must pleasant on a widebody, besides the 767 which is practically the same. The A340 is very similar, but the A330 is a more practical.

747 - Again, it looks fantastic and has grace in the way it moves, plus I travelled on them so often (around 50 times) that it holds nostalgia for me. The 744 is my favourite.

I like a lot of modern airliners, but they're just not quite as appealing to me as those 3 are.

For manufacturers I prefer Airbus because at a time when most Boeings I flew on seemed quite old and dated (SE Asia, early 2000s), Airbuses seemed more modern and spacious, and my subconscious mind factors that to my preferences.

Because I grew up flying these on a regular basis, it looks awesome and has an awesome performance.

The takeoff performance is best described like this:

For flying: the 744 if I'm upstairs. I love taking off in the 757 because the angle is so acute I feel like I'm in the Millennium Falcon.
More than that, though, I value a unique design, perhaps elegant, perhaps quirky; and I value rarity.
I still treasure my one flight in a BOAC VC10, which I think is the most beautiful subsonic airliner of all time.
I never flew in one, but by the late '50s 707s and DC8s were so ubiquitous, that I adored seeing a Convair 990 airborne.
I once embarrassed my wife by causing a minor scene in the Asiana J lounge at Incheon because I'd just spotted a Siberian TU-154 out of the window.
I'm a turboprop fan (not literally, as that would be painful) and used to enjoy a nice flight in a Dash 8 (or now, Q series).

Boeing 747 - Haven't ridden on one yet but it's a beautiful and powerful looking aircraft, no aircraft can compete with it's elegance.
Boeing 757 - Nice looking bird, Comfortable for short and long haul flights, powerful
Embraer E145: Seat on the "A" side is by far the most comfortable I've been in, would take in trans-con

My favourite is the Lockheed Tristar - its size and proportions work well for me and it edges out the MD 11 [and by default the DC10] because the positioning of the rear mounted engine gives a more cohesive flow to the shaping of the plane. I recall lying on my back in kew gardens [near LHR] watching a Tristar approach and fly directly over my head against that rare sight in London, a clear blue sky - it was heavenly :-)

I have a strong bias toward any passenger jet with two seats next to the window in Economy. A330/A340 and upstairs on A380 pretty much. I've never flown on a 767 - hope to catch one before they're all gone. Ditto those rare 787s that have 8-abreast seating.

Travel wise, the one plane I avoid, which might surprise a lot of people, is the A380 as I find it very uncomfortable long haul, especially with a window seat. I openly go out of my way to avoid it. My last few sectors have been on 777-300ER and the A330-300 if I can get it, both of which I have had no problems sleeping in and are my favourites at the moment.

In case you are wondering I always choose a window seat to: a) enjoy the view and b) lean against to sleep. With the A380, the views from the window is quite restrictive and no matter where I have sat in it (upstairs, downstairs, middle, or back), I can't comfortably lean against the wall to rest. With The 777-300ER, in the rear cabin, I can lean and enjoy the views of the world below me.

Short haul, I prefer the A320 over the 737.

My favourite planes though are the DC-10 and 737-200, both of which I have some very fond childhood memories of.

777 - I remember in the mid-1990s following its first flight and thinking how big and modern it was. The 77W is my favorite variant.
A345 - I was always fascinated by the long journeys, especially from SIN to EWR. I was lucky enough to fly that SQ flight in J in the late 2000s

Despite being an aviation enthusiast, I don't really have a favorite. I care only about comfort.

Therefore, I've always enjoyed the 767, DC-9 series, F-100....and JetBlue! Legroom, legroom. And maybe legroom.

I don't like the CRJ because the seats are uncomfortable, and the E-145 is so noisy and jittery that it gives me a headache.

I like the old 747 and 9-across 777. The 330 has always been good to me.

As for beautiful design, nothing will upstage for me the DC-8-63. I enjoyed my long-ago flights on them, and they look so damn good.

I grew up as an airline brat. My Mom started with Ozark Air Lines in 1967. The DC-9 was the plane we flew most often in those days. I loved the 2x3 seating, the rear engines and the rare occasion when we boarded through the rear stairs. 5 abreast seating to me is ideal if you're a party of 2. Nothing else compares. Those 3x3 aircraft just don't do it for me and I cant wait to get on my first DL C-Series!

This. If I'm flying alone to Europe, I try where possible to fly on a 767. But it's becoming harder.

Well, I flew mostly Boeing during my lifetime (YYZ-HKG) but being Canadian, I like bombardier. But between Airbus and BOEING, I like airbus, mainly because of the A340, like why can't Boeing roll out a 4-engine jet these days, like the last POPULAR one was the 707 which is older than 747 and the 747 is my base mark for modern aviation timeline.

Boeing is rolling out four engine jets these days -- the 747-8. Airbus and Boeing both produce the same number of four engine jets at one each, but there's a very good reason that they don't make many anymore. Roughly twice as many 747s have been produced compared to the 707, and there have been four times as many 747s built than A340s. The 747 is by far the most popular four engine jet by production standards.

From a pax perspective, the 767 is the best in my book, as the 2-3-2 seating is awesome. The A330 and 340 with 2-4-2 comes in second. I like the MD-80,90 and 717 because of the 2-3 seating and because they're Maddogs, obviously. I really don't mind any RJs or tprops because the 2-2 or 1-2 (looking at you ERJ) seating isn't bad. I always take window seats, so A320s, 737s, 757s and 777s (haven't flown on the A380 or 747) are all down a notch in my book just because getting to the aisle requires climbing over another person. Getting a Dash is always a fun experience just because its so different than anything else.
Now from an aesthetic perspective, 737>A320 mainly because of the 707/727 nose (I know its not technically the same as the 707, but very close). My all time favorite is the 707 though. Simply the most beautiful (and revolutionary IMHO) airliner ever built.

You have a point, I know I'll insult lots of you with this comment but in my opinion, B747s are way more dangerous than A340, considering their crash records, the A340 has never had a fatality while B747, I don't wanna count, but I guess your right about the 747-8 (Oh and the safety record thing was base on the 747 family as a whole) Still, I don't know why but I just don't like Boeing (This will probably cause a lot of hate) but It's true.

That's sort of an unfair comparison. The 747 and its iterations have been in production for 50 years, and produced more than 1,520 aircraft; the A340 and its derivatives only spent 20 years in production, with 377 having been rolled off the line.

If we're making a closer comparison, it would be more accurate to compare the 747-400 to the A340 based on chronological time in production. While the A340 has not had a fatal hull loss, there have been five accidents causing a hull loss. The 747-400, which had a production run that led to twice as many aircraft than the entirety of the A340 program, has only had two hull losses, one of which was fatal (I'm not including the 747-400 Freighter for a more accurate comparison), and both were attributed to pilot error. The singular fatal event was Singapore flight 006, in which the aircraft rammed construction equipment while attempting to take off on a closed runway. The non fatal event was an Air China flight overrunning the runway in (old) HKG and ending up in Victoria Harbor. Those should not be considered as a detractor from an otherwise impeccable flight safety record.

While the 747-100/-200/-300 variants did suffer a number of fatal accidents (the majority of which were due to outside factors like pilot error, weather, or having been shot down), it is unfair to compare them to the A340 because they were built at different times in aviation history. The 60s, 70s, and into the 80s weren't particularly safe times when it came to air travel in general. It wasn't until the 90s and particularly into the 2000s that safety became what it has become. The A340 has lived out the entirety of its existence in that era, and in relatively small numbers at that...at least in comparison to the 747.

I am not attempting to diminish the A340 or its safety record, but it's similarly unfair to disparage the 747's record based on an unfair comparison.

Then again, the YYZ crash by Air France was caused by weather, the Srilanka air ones were caused by an attack by militants on the airport. Iberia air ones were caused by Pilot error, so was Emirates 407. The Etihad was caused by testing circumstances so that leaves the Air France that caught fire, so basically if you put it that was, the A340 had only one in it's 24 years, more than half of 747 but, it's my opinion.

Some nominees:
The Boeing 757 - It goes without saying why I love the 757. Its versatility, how it can be flown from Pensacola to Atlanta then from New York to Stockholm, leaves me in awe. It's sleek and it's obviously a rocket. I even love the pattern of the deployment of spoilers upon landing for whatever reason. To me, it can do no wrong.

The Boeing 777-200LR - The 777 family just looks badass. The ridiculously powerful engines and those sleek raked wingtips give it an impressive range, something I love in an airliner. It edges out the -300ER for that reason. I also like the proportion of plane to engine.

The Airbus A340-500 - Not as excessively long as the -600 (although that always amazes me) and as I mentioned previously the long range is a personal soft spot. Also flew SQ21 and SQ22, flights between EWR-SIN I always wanted to fly.

But, for the record, I've never seen a terribly ugly airliner. Even the less appealing ones are beautiful in their own way (looking at you, IL96).

I've become partial to Airbus after flying on nothing but DC-9/MD-80s and 737 Classics for so many years. I've enjoyed my flights on UA and US(AA) 319s.

As a Midwestern US hayseed, It's nice to fly on an "exotic" European aircraft once in a while. :D

Same with Embraer vs. Bombardier. I fly into TYS (Knoxville) a lot on American Eagle and most flights have been PSA CRJ-200s. Flew a UA ExpressJet E175 CLE-IAH and it was a nice break from the monotony. (Although we were delayed by 45 minutes because the lav was broken.)

Anything built in the last 10 years is great to me. US carriers seem to love old aircraft like a frugal aunt. (I'm sick of DC-9 Variants. If you want to fly an MD-80, book CLE-DFW. There's plenty of flights left!)

To me, the A330 is one of the most beautiful airplanes ever constructed. The steep dihedral of the wings, only two engines that look right at home, and come on: How can anyone argue with this video: It's so dignified. almost Regal:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lowrM-780tg

Of the current generation: the 78 has the most beautiful wings ever attached to an airliner. It's just that nose...

From a passenger perspective: Nothing beats the A321NEO. Those huge, silent engines with the teal accent. Still, for me: the A330 is gorgeous.
"..your eyes will be forever turned skyward, for there.." yeah we know the DaVinci quote. But GA is so dang expensive these days! :(

My favorite is the 787 for the extra long flights of 10 hours, such as from HNL to SYD, but on a return flight i flew Hawaiian A330 and i have never had better service! I felt like royalty the way we were treated. I don't mind the 737 if its 3 hours or less but on several flights to and from ANC to HNL its absolutely miserable. And it doesn't take turbulence very well if you ask me. The 757 was ok, it was a Delta comfort seat, 20f, cabin wall is ice cold plus the curvature is very noticeable. Overall flying to me has gotten so bad it takes me two days to get over the flight as i live in Alaska so its a minimum 3.5 hours just to Seattle, elsewhere like to HNL its only by Alaska Airlines, next time I'm flying to SEA and then taking the HA A330 from SEA to HNL. Maybe its just that flight,870, too cramped for 6.5 hours. Sours me completely on the 737.

To be truthful my favourite aircraft to fly on is the A380 for the simple reason of it feeling less claustrophobic than other aircraft..

And I hate flying on Qatar 787's for the simple reason that they feel too cramped...

My favorite aircraft would have to be any Douglas product. The sleek lines of the short-length DC8 make it one of the sexiest jets out there. I love the T-tail and 2-3 layout of all the DC9 variants (I went out of my way to schedule an upcoming flight to MSP out of TPA (RSW is my home airport) because the trip is non-stop both ways on MD90s, and to ABE out of PIE because that trip is on a MD83), and nothing can beat watching a beautiful MD11 on final. Long live these wonderful birds.

Distant past, DC-3, My first flight as a boy. Nothing was more amazing than the Twin Wasp radials firing up; big whine, then lots of noise and a huge belch of smoke and it was ready. May be the most dependable aircraft ever?

Not so distant past: 1) L-1011, awesome, comfortable giant in the sky. 2)747, first flight 1971, I'll never forget that; what a change from 707 to 747. The 747 had 5 engines as one was in route to a aircraft in need.

Today: Doesn't matter, the travel/flight experience so so deplorable now that just being able to get from point A to B is not really worth travel. I feel bad for all of the hard working people that must fly for work. The industry is in sad shape.

The future: an Aerion AS2 supersonic private jet. Why, (see today above). At an estimated cost of $120 mil, I may be on commercial transport for ever; but a boy can dream.

Favorite jet ever: B-58 Hustler

Widebody - Hands down without a thought, 747-400. Been a special place in my heart for her even though I've never had the pleasure of being on board. I remember following her when I saw the first article in AW&ST discussing the 747-300 Advanced. Distant second would be the A340-500.

Narrow body - Toss up between the 757-200 and MD-90. I know the latter is just an MD-80 on steroids but there's just something about it I love. Just depends on what day of the week it is to make a decision, but the MD-90 would be the workhorse in my TWA fantasy fleet. "Second place" would be the 727-200. Will always love the ole "Three Holer".

Turboprop - Saab 2000. Got the hots for this one at the moment. Been doing the Youtube tour checking out videos of this bird.

Personal choice - User name says it all, however I'd have to have a Cessna 210T in the hangar when I want to go on a $100 burger trip.
Just when I think you've said the stupidest thing ever, you keep talkin'!

Could not agree more!

I like the 777 too, especially the 773 with those massive engines. But on purely aesthetics alone, the A330 wins, especially the -200. The wings are just glorious.

To be fair, if you book early enough and on the right carrier, it's possible to get an x-x-2 arrangement on a 777 or even a 747, provided you don't mind sitting near the back (personally I don't - less wing obstructing my view and often more shoulder room as taper increases). Two examples I've been on:

VS 744 - rows 61-64: https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Virgi ... -400_4.php
CX 77W - rows 71-72: https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Catha ... 00ER_A.php

For a fair comparison we should consider the 747-400 vs A340, since they are of a similar era. In that case the majority of the 747 crashes were cargo planes with cargo catching fire. A340s don't fly cargo (AFAIK?) so we don't a direct comparison.

In my view both aircraft have a terrific passenger safety record!
