Anything that has more than 2 engines, or that is not configured 3-X-3 in Y, and the 757.

With UA accelerating the retirement of their 744's, I think most folks will agree the 747 will be a missed plane, if not the most-missed plane to disappear from daily passenger service.

But what about the other planes? Here is my opinion:

737 - agree with those who think that Boeing has milked the 50 year old design to the MAX (!). I fly on 737's all the time with AS and while I am pleased with the flying experience, I would like to see a clean-sheet replacement. I think Boeing is seeing the A320 move ahead. So, the 737 would be missed, but not like the 747

757 - I used to dislike the long skinny sardine box. Now I realize it was a brilliantly-sized plane. I wish it was still being built ( I think Boeing does as well!)

767 - best seating layout of any widebody. While a little outdated, definitely a sentimental favorite flying on SK across the Atlantic. Great plane. Sad to see you go!

777 - Too early to kill

787 - Can't go there yet

A320 - if Boeing replaces the 737 they will likely follow. Great plane. Would be missed

A330 - one of the prettiest planes made in my opinion. Will be flying for years. Will be missed for comfort and overall design

A340 - I miss seeing so few 4-engine planes, but this one was rather inefficient compared with the 777. And those engines always looked under-sized (on the 343 that is)

A350 - just a baby! I haven't even seen one yet.

A380 - Never been on one. I appreciate this huge guy flying around. It will be sad to see its last day; many years from now.

MD80/88/90 - Definitely miss these guys. So quiet (unless sitting way in the back). A different looking plane and design. I am thankful to be flying one next month (Delta)

The 747 not missed? Now that's funny.

Yes, and I should have included them. I think they are pretty much all in freight configuration.
UPS MD11's look very good to me.

Really? I fly on them a lot. I'm not a huge fan. I do, however, think it is a cool-looking plane and it is fun sitting around row 15 and watch the landing.

But I thought AS was keeping them for several years, especially on routes like PDX and GEG.

Not pretty much all, just all. There are no DC10s or MD11s left flying pax. Only exception might be the Netherlands Air Force DC-10s which is are sometimes used for troup transport. But those are military flights, no civilian flights.

A320 - I most certainly will miss them!
A330 - I'll miss this a lot too but never been on one.
A340 - I'll miss this the most!
A350 - I suppose since I'm an Airbus fan I'll miss these. Haven't even seen one yet!
A380 - Haven't seen one either but I certainly will miss this.
737 - Mixed feelings, good enough plane but to be honest I'm sick and tired of these bombarding me everywhere I go!
747 - Will be missed very much, I love how it's front looks rather babyish to me (loads of babies that I've seen have pear-shaped faces just like the 747 front)
757 - Won't miss this very much. Never been on one though.
767 - Won't miss this very much either.
777 - I'll miss this a lot, a fantastic plane (never been on one though!)
787 - Meh... from on enthusiast point of view I'll miss it but from a passenger's perspective not so much.

Amen!

I'll add: once, diversity reigned supreme. 747, Concorde, TriStar, IL-62, 727, Dash-7, A340 etc. 2, 3, 4 engines, placed all around the plane, high wings, low wings, T-tails - each and every plane seemed to have it's own distinct permutation of these aspects. And look at it now... I won't miss any of the modern default standard-design twins. Low wing, two wing-mounted engines. Whether it's a 737, a SSJ, an A350 or a 777, I really wouldn't loose any sleep over the phase-out of any of them. But I do realize that the convergence towards a default design is the unavoidable consequence of technology progression towards efficiency optima. The days of diversity are numbered.

Some loathe the CRJ's, but I welcome the diversity their design brings to the aviation scene. At least some planes with tail-mounted engines and T-tails survive. But as most triples and quads are steadily leaving the scene, I can only conclude that I miss diversity more than any plane in particular.

Planes I will/do miss flying on:

747 - still the most beautiful airliner, and always amazing to fly in.
MD80/90/717 - love how they jump off the ground, love the 2x3 cabin that lets me sit with my wife by ourselves
EMB-120 - I know I'm weird but I like small prop planes, makes me feel like I'm really flying
Q400 - again, I love props, and I find the sound dampening tech kind of amazing

Planes I will/do miss looking at:

BAe-146/Avro RJ - four engines on a tiny little plane like that
MD-11 - they're beautiful planes, but I wouldn't like to fly on one
L1011 Tristar - an interesting design, different from most others
DC-8 - actually flew on a bunch of these, but not recently - I love their snake-like look
A340 - four tiny engines make it look bigger than it is

Planes I will/do not miss:

A320 - looks like a piglet, sounds like a lawnmower
A319 - even worse than the A320
A330 - looks like a less elegant 777
DC-10 - had my one major mishap in one of these shortly after AA191, soured me on the whole plane
A380 - ugliest airliner in the air right now
737 (all variants) - early ones were stubby and ugly, modern ones are just generic
767 - always felt like a "poor-man's" widebody to me, seemed like kind of a pretender

I also generally dislike any plane with a 3-3 or 3-3-3 (or 3-4-3) interior, and won't miss them. But some have other redeeming qualities, like the 757's power and look. I didn't put the 777 on any list because I have enjoyed my flights on ANA's 2-4-3 config interiors, but I would probably hate any 3-3-3 or certainly 3-4-3. The jury's still out on the 787 for me; I've never flown on one and I'm still not sure if I like how they look.

The 747's the one I will miss the most.

Uhhhhhh.

I almost had a heart attack when I read that!!

I will miss:

757-Most exciting narrow body that puts the 737 to shame in just about every category that concerns a pilot or enthusiast in general. My favorite plane. Love the PW2000 too.
767-Most comfortable wide body with 18" seats and only one middle seat per row. It looks like a beast even though it is the smallest wide body and it is also surprisingly sporty for a wide body. Also my other favorite plane. It has to be one of the most underappreciated planes in the skies. Love the sound of the engines regardless of type too. Not the quietest especially when not equipped with PW4000s, but I couldn't care less about noise.
747-Never been on one, but it can't not be on the list.
777-Boeing's finest engineering to this day. They took everything that was good on the 767 and 747-400 then made it better and combined it with FBW.
737-200-The 737 that was what it was intended to be. Love the old JT8Ds and the memories of flying on those back in the day when I was a little kid.
Air Canada's A320s-I am generally a fan of the A320 and have lots of memories flying on them, but I am especially attached to AC's and I am enraged to no end that they 737 is replacing them.
727-Always a treat to see such a fascinating design.
DC-9 and derivatives-Far more exciting than the 737 and though I've only been on the MD-82/83, I will miss all derivatives.
A380- I'm not the biggest fan of the plane, but it will be sad to see such amazing engineering go to waste.
A320-While I especially wil, miss AC's, this plane has a special place for me for some reason even though my favorite is a tie between the 757 and 767. Certianly my favorite Airbus. The engines sound great too.
A330-Not my favorite Airbus or plane in general for that matter as I think they look ok, but not great. I will miss it however as I always have wanted to fly on one and always was somehow fascinated by it. It looks very nice compared to the 787 imo. I will also miss the loud moan of the Trent 700 spooling up.
DC-8-Never been on one and haven't seen many, but something about it gets me excited and I will miss it.
ERJ-Not a fan of the plane and probably would never fly on one again, but the engine sound on those is so attractive that I will oddly enough miss them.
C-17-I'm not a military av guy, but you can't go wrong with 4 PW2040s.
A340-I in no way, shape, or form like this plane, but I will miss seeing their terrible climb performance and making fun of it, and everyone has to admit that the sound of 4 CFM56s is a really good thing. The Trent 500 of the other hand is rather bland.
CRJ-Not even close to the most comfortable jet out there or the most exciting, but I will miss them for some reason. I guess part of it is that the last one I was on at this point was a -705 so it actually was comfortable. I guess the sound of the engines combined with how quiet the plane is otherwise will be missed even though I try to avoid flying on them or any regional jet when possible. I do hate the sparse amount of windows though.
Dash 8 (any variant)-I am not the biggest fan of the Dash 8 or prop powered planes in general, but the Dash 8s sound good and look cool. The Q400 is a rocket too. I would like to try flying on one sometime. I will miss the loud hum from the old ones on takeoff that seems to vibrate everything in the area.

Planes I will not miss:

737-900-In my opinion, Boeing's saddest product and while it made so much sense from a financial standpoint, it really is a joke from an engineering standpoint as it is the minivan of planes... wait that's the A321, the 737-900 is much worse than that. This is probably my least favorite plane.
737 max-Why Boeing, why?!? One step too far or not far enough depending on how you look at it. Again it makes financial sense, but not the best work in
terms of engineering and innovation. The 737 should have died after the NG or even the Classic. I certainly won't miss the cockpit.
787-This, in my opinion, is the most overrated and overhyped plane in the skies. It really is a strange looking machine. It does a nice cockpit though, but please Boeing use beige next time instead of the cold depressing grey.
Any pax plane that removes windows and replaces them with screens-Need I say more?
A plane that is BWB, pilotless, all electric, etc-boring... who wants to sit in a plane that is configured like a theater? I will miss even the 737-900 any of these become reality.

I honestly will miss the 757, 767, and A320 the most because over the years they have meant the most t me and have fuelled my passion the most.

I definitely will miss the LUS A333's when they go. As for an overall aircraft, the MD-80, grew up obsessed with them and their quirky seating and look, but of course the sound they produced.

But man screw the 737, cannot tell you how much I despise it.

Aircraft that most certainly won't be missed:

737 - Absolutely despise those uncomfortable old junkers.
767 - Just boring. Like ugali without any side-dishes.
A320 - Same as the 767.
CRJ - Hardly need to explain why.
ATR - Noisy.
Dash-8 - Even more noisy.
757 - Hideous.
MD-80 - Rear-mounted engines look weird and outdated.

Unsure:
A330 - Has a little bit of 767 blandness in it.
777 - Also has a little bit of 767 blandness in it.
747 - Never quite liked the stretched hump.

Will be missed:
727
A340
MD-11
A380
E-Jet
Fokker 50

Aren't you kind of contradicting yourself there? If you don't like the rear engines on the MD-80, what is it that you like about the also rear-engined 727?

Anyway, I thought I'd posted in this thread months ago when it first appeared, but apparently I didn't get around it. So here are mine:

Ones I won't miss:
737 -- If only because I've flown on them so often I've had my fill of them.
A320 -- Same reason as above, not to mention the rather generic appearance.
CRJ -- No explanation needed

Ones I definitely will miss:
747 -- Just for its very distinctive appearance.
MD-80/90/717 -- I for one like the rear engine T-tail look, and the quirky seating arrangement. And it's a treat to fly on one just because it's not a 737 :)
E-120 -- Already do miss, actually, since they're now gone from the routes they used to fly here in California. I always thought it was kind of fun buzzing along at 9000 feet from SMF to SFO.

Runners up:
757 -- I was never as big of a fan as many here are, and there was a time about 10 years ago I was getting tired of them just because it seemed like I ended up on one every time I traveled somewhere. But now that they're becoming less common and many of the routes they used to fly are now flown with 737s or A320s, I find it a nice treat to fly on a 757 just because it's something different. So I probably will miss them when they're gone.
767 -- They're kind of bland appearance wise, but I like the 2-3-2 seating.

Really, though, the majority of planes I'll probably miss on some level when they're gone.

You sit north of row ~15 or so it is absolutely serene, first class you barely hear the engines at takeoff thrust and it is nothing but wind noise at cruise. MD-90 up in E+ or F you don't even hear the engines at takeoff, just a shove in the back during takeoff.

Oh it isn't about the looks with the 727, it's the flying qualities of it. I haven't met a single former 727 pilot who wasn't absolutely thrilled with it, and they never say anything critical about it. It just gets more love from the crews than any other aircraft I have heard of, and I would absolutely have loved to work on one. Pilots of one former Yugoslav airline I met even claimed that they could match the efficiency of the 737-400 by shutting down one engine in cruise.

This the correct answer.

I remember dreading being scheduled on MD-80's back in the early 2000s -- but, due to their ever diminishing availability, I find I enjoy them more and more.

For me the Tristar I think. Gulf Air and the BWIA liveries were the best.
I haven't seen one for years. I popped down to Lyon the other day and almost bolted out of my seat when I spotted one near the runway!

These are ones I miss seeing and I've included 2 Airlines for each too to show which ones I fancied the most. Growing up with LHR and to a lesser extend LGW gives me a choice.

So Tristars. ..Gulf Air and BWIA
B707. ...MEA and TMA
B727. ...Lufthansa and Iberia
B747. ...Pan Am...JAL
B747SP ...Iran Air and Air Mauritius
DC8 ......SAS and Air Canada
DC9.......British Midland and Iberia
DC10.... Varig and British Caledonian
A300. ...Olympic Airways and Alitalia
A310.....Pan Am and Swissair
A340.....Air Jamaica and BWIA
Tu134...Malev and CSA
Tu154...LOT and Malev
Il62.......LOT and CSA

I think the 737 and A320s tend to bore the pants off most people by their sheer numbers. Once the 747 is gone we'll all miss her the most.

I can't speak for everyone else, but since the topic is planes that will be missed, I limited my list to planes that are still in service but that I will miss once they are retired. Concorde isn't a plane that will be missed, it's a plane that already is missed.

Although looking at the planes other people mentioned it's evident that not everyone shares my interpretation of the topic.

I miss the 727 the most of all. The beautiful design of this jet is absolutely unmatched. I only got to fly on it once, and it remains the best flight of my life.

L1011. The best widebody trijet. Advanced for its time, very safe, very beautiful airplane. The slaughter of these airframes has been gutwrenching. Theyve almost all been scrapped, and only two are airworthy that I know of. An absolute tragedy.

DC-9 family, including MD-80 and MD-90. I have always loved these jets. The MD80 was the first plane I ever saw that I actually thought was beautiful as a kid, and that kickstarted my love of aviation. While I came to love trijets even more, these planes are one of the last holdouts of the classic era of jet aviation and I will dearly miss them.

737-200. The best looking of the 737s in my opinion and sharing that wonderful JT8D with the other classic liners I love. I still see one flying around from Sierra Pacific...probably the last one that will ever regularly fly in my area before it is retired.

747. Flying on this a few years ago i had no idea how soon it would become difficult to fly on one at all. It's so strange to think that the era of the 747 is drawing to an end.

757. One of the more overpowered and exciting aircraft out there. I've always loved this plane. It has its roots in the 727 and has always felt somewhat related to that plane. But even though it's a standard design of wings on the engine and a low tail...somehow its unique enough that it's beautiful. And again another plane that I had no idea would become hard to get a flight on so quickly.

767. These used to bore me because I wanted to be on trijets. Now, seeing them getting scrapped actually makes me sad. Never thought theyd leave.

On the opposite end...I'm sick to death of A320s and the latest 737 incarnations, as well as all the Ejets flying around. Airline fleets have become much more consolidated and streamlined and that's good for business...but bad for variety. As much as I love aviation...the terminal has become a much more boring place since commonality became king.

I will definitely miss seeing the 737 classics. They're getting hard to find nowadays, even at Southwest.

On that note, I had a 732 fly over my house (SAN) last year. Totally unexpected. Sierra Pacific I think. Made me realize that these are now ultra rare aircraft.

Similarly, saw a 722 cargo fly in. I can't remember what it was. These old birds don't have ADS-B, so it's difficult to tell when it's incoming. And I can't see them coming because by the time they are on top of me, it's too late.

Ive been able to track 727s on FlightAware...I wonder if they were just ADS-B equipped or if FA was able to track via other means. Some of these I've tracked over the pacific and around the world too.

They can use MLAT (interrogating Mode A, C, S) to approximate the position. Also there are radar tracks. I've seen 727s as well, but that one didn't show up...

It seems most of a.net is divided when it comes to the Maddogs. People either love it or hate it, no in between! Personally, I love it, especially when sitting before the wing because you don’t hear a single thing, other than the air rushing past your window. I’ll also miss the 717s, because sitting in the back when those engines purr is awesome.
Other aircraft I’ll miss:
767/A330 (as others mentioned; because of the seating configuration)
757 (that climb rate tho)
ERJ-145 (having an aisle and window seat rocks!)

Aircraft I can’t wait to see go:
CRJs

Odd only seeing few mentions to the MD-11...
Am I the only one who miss this beauty?

B717: Snagged a cheap flight on a V7 717 this fall and the spool-up sound of these sweet BR715s just does everything completely right. Comfort-wise also miles ahead of the B738 I took on the connecting flight. V7 is already replacing theirs with A319s, so it looks like Europe will be left without the B717 once again. Quite sad to see them go.

F100: I've been admiring the little Fokkers ever since my childhood but never got a chance to fly one until this September. Took an OS F100 from VIE to BEG and was promptly taken off guard by the high-powered takeoff. That flight only lasted about an hour but the FAs were extremely friendly and the seats the most comfortable I've flown in Y up to now.

(also: first post here after a long time of reading, yay!)

I'll miss the 767 and A330 for sure, after those are gone it will be difficult to find anything with seats in sets of 2. Especially will miss the 767...only 1 out of 7 seats is a middle!

Sadly I think once we see what horrible sardine-can configurations carriers use for the 737MAX we'll all be missing 757s and the 737-NG models. Similar story with the 777...now that 10-across is normal I won't be sad when they are retired (long way off I know).

I know many on here will disagree but I absolutely don't miss the DC-10 or MD-11 one bit. Of course, I don't really miss anything from the pre-AVOD IFE days but the center section of the 2-5-2 layout was especially heinous. I'll miss the 747 but only because I only flew on them with KE and their 34'' pitch with excellent service, food, and entertainment. Never rode a UA or NW one, by all accounts I should be thankful.

I guess I'll miss the A seats on the ERJs, unique having a window and aisle for sure. But I am FAR more prone to motion sickness on that plane than any other. As for the CR2...I'll dance a jig when the last one is finally gone. If they had been kept to their original purpose of replacing Saab340s and EMB-120s on feeder flights I would have loved them, but coming of age in the RJ-glut of the 2000s and having to ride 3-hour sectors in them was not fun at all. The 700s and 900s are far better and I don't really mind them for 2-hour trips, but I won't necessarily miss them. Especially if they are replaced by the E2 or CS100.

Not sure how I forgot the F100! Was a kid in Nashville back when AA ran a small hub mainly utilizing the F100s. My earliest flying memories are riding those up to ORD accompanying my old man on business and down to MCO to visit Mickey. Takeoff was way more fun in those things, same with DC-9s.

Miss the A300 and its little brother the A310 - the original baby bus. LOVED those planes.

I am sure the DC10 is a fine aircraft - but my experience is limited to those awful 40 year old aircraft Northwest sent on their India routes. AWFUL! Ugh!

Among modern aircraft - the Dash 8-400. Somehow dont feel very safe boarding one of those. Irrational I know. Just this inner feeling that I cant explain.
