List Making: Cheapest/Best Value Flight You've Booked

Thu Oct 27, 2016 11:26 pm

Hello all, after seeing those cheap $2 Ryanair fares the past few days it has me wishing I lived in Europe! With that being said I've been thinking about starting this thread for people to share their "Big Wins" on the cheapest flights or best bang for your buck tickets that some of you a.netters have booked. For consistency's sake lets keep it recent, within the last 3 years, include the airline, route, month and year, and if it was a round trip or one way ticket. Also any currency is fine, nothing google can't convert for you. I'm sure most of the low fares will be from Europe but will be interesting to see what other regions bring in. Here's mine...

Cheapest:
€16, Torino - Malta, Ryanair (One Way) April 2016
€24, Barcelona - Torino, Vueling (One Way) April 2016
€49, Malta - Dublin, Ryanair (One Way) April 2016
$106 CAD, Miami - Toronto, Air Canada (One Way) December 2014
$123 CAD, Niagara Falls, NY - Fort Lauderdale, Spirit Airlines (Round Trip) November 2015
$299 CAD, Toronto - Reykjavik, WOW Air (Round Trip) June 2016

Best Bang for my Buck:
$236 CAD, Dublin - Toronto, Air Transat (One Way) April 2016
$538 CAD, Toronto - Helsinki, Finnair (Round Trip) September 2015. Hands down my biggest win to date.

Best value:

around €250 for MAD-FCO-NRT / KIX-FCO-BRU with Alitalia in 2012
around $400 for MCO-MIA-GIG-MIA-MCO with American Airlines in 2013

I had booked one wrong fare for MAD-BRU-AUH-SYD-AUH-BRU-MAD (I think this was the route a few years ago) in 2011 or so with Brussels/Etihad for also around €300 but I cancelled it since I couldn't travel on those dates (obviously EY was very happy lol).

Cheapest, tons of Ryanair flights (1 cent, 1 euro, 5 euro, 10 euro...). Outside Ryanair, back in 2007-2010 it was easy to get very good fares with pretty much everybody (now is somehow back). I.e. I recall a ATH-MAD with Vueling (when VY was not still part of IAG and had a hub there) for €20 ai.

Cheapest had to be a PEOPLExpress flight my mom booked for me in about 1984 or so... it was something like $12 to go EWR to Charlotte.

Best value... I mean ignoring rewards flights, back in the early 00's I did JFK-NRT round trip for around $400, though I don't remember on which airline. It could have been UA, NH or NW.

More recently, I feel like flying first class JFK-FLL for $221 was a pretty good deal.

Short Range:
€ 9,99 for LEJ-STR-LEJ with Germanwings (booked 5 times in one month)

Long Range:
€ 1010,0 for LHR-LAX-HNL-AKL-HKG-LHR with Air New Zealand ATW-Fare
€ 1050,0 for ORY-SCU-HAV-ORY with Cubana in Business Class. Flight was downgraded to all Economy Class with no refund due to aircraft change so it was only good in theory.

I've booked some pretty outrageously cheap returns to some lovely places with FR through the years... Brussels, Malta, Barcelona, Tenerife, Bratislava, Budapest... some for as cheap as 1Euro all in.

I still want to catch Volotea's B717 but it never works well for me. You have to live in a "medium city" (like they call them) and want to fly to another one.

A quick check on the LATAM website tells me its available for £106 one way in Nov/Dec/new year, which is still amazing value!

I flew one-way TXL-AMS on AB a few years back for the equivalent of $40 Canadian. Last summer I flew YYZ-DPS (+return) for $1800 Canadian in peak season which I thought was a good deal.

About $450 roundtrip (!!!) for AMS-EWR-RDU and RDU-YYZ-AMS on UA and AC this Christmas! Definitely the cheapest transatlantic flight I've ever found. I was absolutely astonished to find this fare, as flights originating in the US seem to be around twice as expensive, and this flight was booked directly with United.

Best value:

Pisa-LHR-JFK-LAX in first and on Concorde in 1999. $3400.

Lhr-JFK alone on Concorde would have been $8000.

My best value was one way IND-IAD for $48. Thats a decent deal but what made it an amazing deal was the fact that the flight was overbooked and I was offered a $400 voucher to take a flight the next morning, hotel and meal voucher included.

Error fare on the LAX-OGG? Also the LH leg must have been a points/mileage run, assuming LAX is your home base. Those are some great deals.

15 euros EIN - Timisoara (Romania) return is my cheapest yet, on WizzAir.

I was eyeing a 4 euro return fare EIN - DUB, sadly it was gone before I was able to book, was on RyanAir. I instead booked a 34 euro return fare, however it departs from AMS which is much more convenient for me so I am okay with that, it's still cheap enough.

Cheapest:

£4, Stansted-Cologne, Ryanair (Return) November 2014
£10, Stansted-Dublin, Ryanair (Return) September 2010
£18, Luton-Vilnius, Wizz Air (OneWay) June 2016
£19, Southend-Dublin, Aer Lingus (OneWay) June 2012
£24, Kaunas-Gatwick, Ryanair (OneWay) April 2015

Best Value:

£150, Heathrow-Nice, Bmi Business Class (Return) January 2012
£90, Heathrow-Frankfurt, British Airways A380 (Return) October 2013
£70, Gatwick-Amsterdam, Garuda 77W (OneWay) October 2014

I'll never forget that Bmi flight, NCE was one of their new routes and a special offer email landed in my inbox offering heavily discounted Business Class seats and I jumped at the chance! Excellent flights and I think they were my last ever on Bmi before it disappeared into British Airways.

Back in 2007 I bought STN-DUB rtn for 1 GBP pence each way. In those days there were no fees. so It was a cheap day's entertainment. My Visa was only ever charged 0.05c NZD for the entire trip.

Air New Zealand used to do a 12 days of Christmas sales campaign via their grabaseat website. It would start out as $12NZD each way and end with $1NZD. Every year I would grab a heap of tickets that way, but My best was an itinerary I linked up WLG-NSN-WLG-CHC-IVC-CHC-IVC-CHC for $7NZD (and I used my airpoint dollars so it effectively was free.

I flew CDG-CAI-NRT on MS Business class for about $1000, which was basically an extra $200 over Y. Not a super cheapie but good value all the same.

I flew AKL-LAX-AKL, AKL-SIN-AKL, AKL-HKG-AKL for $599 return each on NZ, Lots of flying for the money

My best value flight would be the flight I just took on QR - KUL-DOH-IAD and return from LAX for only $630 all in with only one month advance purchase. To put it into perspective, it would usually cost up to $1000 or more for me to get from KUL to any American gateway whether it's on the East Coast or the West Coast. (the cheapest I managed to get for the same sector was around $1200 on DL/KE). In fact, had I traveled with a group of 7 or more people, the fare would have been lower by $200 per person!

Cheapest would have definitely been PEN-LGK, a 25 minute flight on MH back in 1999, cost me around $28 per-person, and that's pre AirAsia LCC.
I FLY KLM+ALASKA+QATAR+MALAYSIA+AIRASIA+MALINDO

In 2015 CX DXB-HKG-LAX return for $1,525 in Econ/Premium Econ. Emirates non-stop in Econ was slightly more than that.
Way back in 2011, I snagged AA AUH-ORD-BOS-JFK-AUH (with AUH-ORD & JFK-AUH on EY) for $790 which is easily my best value deal ever.

Best bang for buck was LHR-AKL return (via DXB and SYD) on Emirates last year, which cost me £740 each. Making the extra stop in Australia was a bit of a drawback, but a big plus was the entire trip was on the wonderful (from a passenger perspective at least) A380. Much better than a 10 abreast 77W on NZ unfortunately.

Any time I can get this trip at the time I usually make it (mid-late NZ summer time) for less than £1k each, I figure I'm doing well.

A few gems for me:

EDI - CDG - DTW - LAS - DTW - AMS - EDI with Air France, Delta and KLM for £370. Free seat selection etc in advance was the icing on the cake. Extra legroom the whole way.

Adding an upgrade option for United on my return leg from BOS to EDI. For £35 I was able to make the BOS - EWR flight First meaning I got extra baggage the whole way back to EDI as well as checking in at the First Class Desk where the waived the $120 charge for an exit row on the EWR - EDI Flight.

Managing to buy a flex ticket with EasyJet for 3 days after my intended flight, which was half the price of a standard ticket on my intended day of flgiht and then being able to flip it immediately into the day I wanted.

SIN-KUL-ADL-KUL-SIN on MH for S$240. Booked in August 2014, flew in December 2014. Also took advantage of the newly introduced MHUpgrade (at that time) to upgrade all my legs to Business with the exception of KUL-ADL. In total I paid about S$600.

The ADL-KUL flight was eventually delayed for 24 hours and I still got a free night at a hotel, taxi vouchers and meal vouchers. Also got S$300 from my insurance.

Nett loss from the air tickets - around S$300. :)

I did not book this flight but just a few days ago I saw a sale on SQ and it's a bookable fare. SFO-SIN-SFO on the nonstop A359 flight in Premium Economy for only US$1300. That's quite a steal if you ask me. SIN-SFO-SIN in Premium Economy was going for S$3200.
One day I will fly around the world!

It's absolutely nothing compared to most here, but I have to rate for best value AU$107 in September 2014 to fly Qantas BNE-SYD on the B747-438ER. I needed to get from BNE to SYD anyway and it was a whole dollar cheaper than a flight thirty minutes later on a B738 :p

I will be in MCO over the weekend and out of curiosity I was messing around looking for some cheap day trips to the Bahamas or Key West on Saturday and I came across Frontier's MCO-MSY-MCO for $38 round trip. I've always wanted to try Frontier and now I will on a steal of a price!

$36 round trip DCA-BOS-DCA the second day JetBlue was serving DCA, took a day trip to Boston.
I have flown MIA-LAX under $300 on multiple occasions, that fare is hard to find now, especially on AA.
$99 round trip MIA-ORD on AA.

Cheapest: .01 € for a STN-BSL flight. I had to pay 5 € for the credit card booking though...
Best value: ZRH-FRA-CLT-SFO-PHL-BOS-PHX-PDX | LAX-ORD-PHL-ZRH, all on one ticket for 1,400 US$

Granted, both were more than three years ago, but I still think the latter was a pretty good deal.

I enjoy listmaking and analysis of my flight log.

My list is sorted according to fare per distance (km). I have excluded all flights I took on standby staff tickets and also exculded all flights booked using frequent flyer miles.

As my home currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF) this is what I used to determine the fares (using the exchange rates at the time of booking). Just for reference I added a column in Euro (EUR) and US Dollars (USD) converting from CHF using today's actual exchange rate. All kinds of mandatory fees (e.g. credit card fees, bag fees if I carried one) are included, but not costs for buy-on-board or preorder meals.

Re: List Making: Cheapest/Best Value Flight You've Booked

I had my fair share of super low prices over the years, with a few even lower than just the taxes & fees alone.
My most recent "subsidized" tickets, ie nett prices inclusive of all airport taxes and booking fees is about US$30 for a roundtrip SIN-MNL-SIN (2380km x 2) in June 2015 on Jetstar. Those taxes and fees alone would amount to US$36, so the fare was six bucks in negative territory.
Yeah, I know the OP said last three years but I had a even better deal about 6 years ago on TigerAir at US$15.50 SIN-JKT-SIN (900km x 2), or a "subsidy" of US$20.50. Still, both of these were topped by SIN-KCH-SIN (720km x 2) in April 2008 on AirAsia at US$35.....for my family of FOUR. (Just the taxes & fees would have cost US$145, so its free airfares plus US$110 effective direct subsidy).

I just remembered my $60 oneway trip AKL-SYD on LA which included negative value taxes.. I got upgraded on the day to Business Class on a 789, which was not bad for a 3h flight.

Best value, probably on Air China
ARN-FRA-PEK (ARN-FRA operated by SAS, 738)
PEK-ULN
ULN-PEK-MUC
about 550 USD
when they charged
PEK-ULN-PEK 350-400 USD
in summer 2014

cheapest, sincerely, don't know, maybe on REX in Australia
ADL-KGC-ADL
can't remember the price, but it was cheaper than ferry, so maybe 25 or 30 AUD per segment

£146 for LHR-JFK return on Air India.

It was 18 years ago, but still a pretty good price.

The best I remember booking was DTW-LGW-DTW for a trip in February 2004 on Northwest flights 32 and 31, both on DC-10-30s :D The return ticket per person including tax was just over $200 USD, an amazing deal, even then!

Cheapest and best value: SAN-JFK-GIG-MIA-PHX-SAN for 350 dollars in AA business class. Easily the deal of the decade.

During the QR "travel festival" last month, there were some nice fares from Egypt. Though some R/T routes to the US were around/sub-$300, I bit the J bullet and got a ticket for around $690.

Cheapest short haul: GMP-CJU on KE for 29USD one-way on the 744, last year.
Cheapest long haul: GMP-PEK-LAX on CA for 340USD one-way on the 738/77W, two years ago. Got to spend two days in Beijing as well.

I pretty reliably scored MDW-BNA roundtrips for $97 on WN all during my freshman year in college. '05-'06 academic year.

MDW-ATL one way for $70 on DL with only about 48 hrs advance purchase, and the medallion upgrade cleared a few hours after buying the ticket.

MKL-BNA-ATL one way for $49 on an obscure EAS flight that no longer exists. Good riddance, I tried the BNA-MKL flight more than once and it was late every single time.

I've booked YVR-DUS for $99 CAD one way (taxes in) back in the 1990s. I've been getting a lot of YLW-YEG fares for about $65 CAD (taxes in) which for Canada, is damn cheap. But the best deal I've gotten was a flight hotel package last summer - airfare from YLW-LAS and 4 nights in a suite at the Aria for $316 CAD (taxes in).

My best domestic run recently was $138 r/t on UA from IAH-LAX in December 2014. Made for a nice weekend.
My best value international was IAH-NRT-HKG-NRT-IAH on NH for $648 in January 2015. Good airline and good service at a great price.
