Your Perfect fleet for an overseas airline?

Wed Jun 22, 2016 9:34 pm

Hello

I was wondering, what would be your ideal fleet, if you had an airline that does a lot of overseas routes?

For me:

4 A380s
8 77Ws
8 A350s
8 787s

PS: This my first post in the new A-Net. :D :D :D :D

You mean an all long-haul airline? I'd stick to one type of aircraft, 787-9 only. How many of them? The more the better of course.

It would depend on what routes I was running and the traffic, but in general I would be looking at the A350, 787 and 777 families if I was starting operations "today".

My ideal fleet would be DC-10s and MD-11s but that is why I'm not running an airline.

What would an airline be without a million 748i's? ;)

If we include "paper airplanes" in this, I'd go with the 737-7.5 and -10 for the lower capacity side (TATL of course), and A359/LR/1000 for the upper. Maybe 788 or A338 for the mid range, maybe even new-build 763s if offered a good deal.

It depends if I was launching a premium long haul airline or if I was launching a more low cost/charter long haul airline.
For a premium airline I would look at long haul fleet consisting of:
- Airbus A330-200/-300 for all flights under 9 hour flights (later replaced by Airbus A330-800/-900)
- Boeing 787-8/-9/-10 for all flights over 10 hours that serve a smaller market either from passenger point of view or a cargo point of view.
- Boeing 777-300(ER) for all the flights that demand a high number of seats or that has good cargo demand (later replaced by the Boeing 777-9)
==
For a low cost/charter airline I would look at long haul fleet consisting of:
- Airbus A330-200/-300 for all flights under 9 hour flights (later replaced by Airbus A330-800/-900)
- Boeing 787-8/-9/-10 for all flights over 10 hours.
==
My Airbus A330-200/-300 fleet would be Rolls-Royce Trent 700 powered, my Airbus A330-800/-900 fleet would be Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 powered, my Boeing 787-8/-9/-10 fleet would be Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 powered, my Boeing 777-300(ER) fleet would be GE90 powered and my Boeing 777-9 fleet would be GE9X powered.

One of every type of plane ever built.

Actually, make that two. One for the regular livery, and one for a special livery.

For me:

B757-200ER (for routes between 3000-4000 mi and routes that need time to prove themselves)
A330-200/-300HGW (for routes between 4000-7000 mi and shorter routes that need upgauging)
B777-300ER (for high capacity, high demand routes)
A350-900ULR (for ultra-long haul; >7000 mi)

I should have add 748s, and I guess If built, I could add 737-10.

Interesting topic. I've been playing a head game similar to this, the scenario is a "what if" scenario, what if WW2 went slightly different and Poland ended up west of the iron curtain and LOT ended up being almost like a proto-ME3 carrier which connects the world through its WAW hub. I figured the following fleet:

Narrow body
ATR-72 for domestic and smaller Eastern European routes
Embraer E-jet for thinner, longer intra European rutes
B737 family for trunk European routes, and thinner central Asia, middle east, north Africa routes

Widebody
A332 for long thin routes, South America, secondary Chinese and US cities - to be replaced by B787-8/9
A333 for China, India, trunk central Asia, and East Coast US - to be replaced by B787-9/10
B77E for longer and cargo heavy routes - to be replaced by A359
B77W for long haul trunk routes - to be replaced by A359/J

Also, can't decide if A388 would make sense or not, sometimes I like to include it sometimes I don't.

~200 737-800 and -900ER for flights to North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and some of South America.
~30 757-200 for small TATL markets and Hawaii.
~60 787-9 for Europe, South America, smaller Asia markets and lower/medium demand ULH routes.
~10 777-200LR for larger ULH routes
~40 777-300ER for flights to larger markets in South America, Asia and Europe.
~20 747-8i for "trunk" routes

In general I would say a mixed fleet of A333 CEO and A350-900/1000 would be hard to beat in terms of economics and flexibility. Something similar could be said of a 789 and 77W fleet, this would trade low aquisition costs for better long-term economics and range on the low end (333 vs. 789).

Asking what is the right fleet without specifying any sort of route network is kind of like asking whether you'd rather be outside or inside without specifying the weather.

For a TATL or intra-Asia ULCC airline: 333.
For a European-based legacy-style airline: 789 + 78X + 35K.
For a U.S.-based legacy-style airline: 788 + 789 + 78X + 35K.
For an East Asian legacy-style airline: 339 + 359 + 779.
For a ME3: 78X + 779 + 388.

Oh I am with you on this one mate.. DC-10s..yes!

Actually, hang on a minute... who needs widebodies?..

I want a whole fleet of VC-10s. With no televisions or silly gimmicks. Just give me 34'' of seat pitch, some good recline, and decent food. Oh, and those 4 amazing rollers pushing behind my back...
