I had to stare at the photo for like 5 seconds to realize they are not 2 A359s.

Not sure how, considering that one look at the gear can easily differentiate the two of them.

I think the biggest giveaway if you're looking at one and don't have anything to compare it to is the positioning of the Qatar titles relative to door 2. On the -900, door 2 is between the A and the R, while on the -1000 door 2 is after the R.

Seems to me that the easiest way to tell the difference is the group of three windows, one of which appears to be blanked out, after door 2 and then a gap before the windows start again.

Actually the A35K has "QATAR" clearly framed between doors 1 & 2
For other airlines, you'll spot them with time ;)

True, unless one spots the aircraft in the air and the landing gear is retracted.

With all it covers and seals at the doors, it looks like long time storage... any reason for that or was it this way all the time during reworks?

You may use the position of the antennas. 359 has a pretty small distance between the Sat antenna in the back and the (I assume) VHF antenna right over the 3rd door. On the 35K the distance between the antennas is way bigger and the VHF antenna is not directly over the 3rd door.

It's because it had just been painted. If it was to be stored for a long time, then they would not have installed the engines I guess.

Long term storage would look different. I have seen that kind of seals before, even on aircraft that had been parked for several weeks.

MSN 167 CA #1 is probably due for delivery in February next year.

They look like quite quick seals compared to those for long term storage. I also agree this is not long term as the engines are hanging under the wing.

The problem with cold weather testing is that you spend a lot of time with cold soak and then very little time testing as everything will warm up quickly while testing and then you no longer have the conditions you are looking for.

I wonder if Boeing's use of facilities that can maintain a specific temperature allows for more consistent / constant testing than having to rely on open-air.

Looking at Airbus press releases, both the A350-900 and A350-1000 appear to have done their cold weather testing outside at Iqaluit, Canada.

They did testing in Florida as well for the A359 in addition to the tests in Canada.

Yes, but Iqaluit was all about outside testing. The A350 also underwent cold weather testing in the McKinley Climatic Lab at Eglin Air Force base in Florida.

Cold testing re -1000 .....hence why I am puzzled as to why this weeks trip to MKE. Most of the test flying was at low level ....FL10 .....suggesting possible icing tests rather than mere static system tests. MKE has been not that cold but offered plenty of snow over the week.

As yet the EASA clearance still has no all westher capability specified and the cross wind restrictions also seem outstanding ...,although someone has said they are finding it difficult to find an airfield giving the right conditions. Along with ETOPS clearance for new engine I am sure Qatar abd CX will want all these possible issues to be resolved before EIS. Finally interesting that no “world tour” undertaken ...all very low key but it is seen as a variant.

I wonder where the new AB senior team will take the 300 family next especially 380/350 and 330 .....rationalisation?

Florida does not seem like the most efficient place to have to do cold weather testing indoors... I bet they handed airbus a giant bill afterwards :rotfl:

That is interesting, although that is the only story I can find where the lab has blown up. There is another story that a building next to the lab had the incident.

Explosion, Fire at Eglin Air Force Base Test Center

A support building next to the lab exploded and burned, sending a plume of toxic smoke into the air and closing Eglin Air Force Base.

So is there more news about what happened and what damage was caused?
