Quoting SonomaFlyer (Reply 1): I would expect it to happen but first, their masters at DL must decide what in DL's best interest The DL pilot contract contains joint venture scope language and the question of whether that scope will be expanded, curtailed or stay the same makes a big difference on what VS orders. |
Quoting SonomaFlyer (Reply 1): their masters at DL must decide what in DL's best interest |
Quoting Boeing778X (Thread starter): Is an order still in the works at this time? 747-400/A340-600 replacement, while swapping the A380 order? |
Quoting Beatyair (Reply 10): Maybe the order will be given at that giant air show in the UK? I would think they would wait to see one fly first and maybe after they fix the noisy hydrolics issues on the A350-900's |
Quoting Beatyair (Reply 10): I would think they would wait to see one fly first |
Quoting Beatyair (Reply 10): Do airlines get discounts on Airbus products if there countries make the product? Or are they encouraged to swing that way? |
Quoting kaitak (Reply 14): Let's not forget that this is quite a significant number of types for what is actually a pretty small airline. The airline currently operates A330-300s, A340-600s, 747-400s and 787s and while they probably have a common pilot pool for the A330/346, they are still separate types and although RR engines are used on all but the 744, they are still different engines. That's a lot of fleet types in an airline that has not a very large fleet. I suspect DL will want to aim for simplification and will probably want to see VS move to two types. |
Quoting seabosdca (Reply 15): The question is whether that larger type is the 350 or the 777X. The need to do something about the 380 order may favor the 350. |
Quoting Sooner787 (Reply 13): and the 78J to replace their A346's? |
Quoting seabosdca (Reply 15): The question is whether that larger type is the 350 or the 777X. The need to do something about the 380 order may favor the 350. If Airbus launched a A350-1100 that was a straight stretch of the 35K, that would also help the 350's case. In the 777X's favor are 1) its size lends more naturally to 747-400 replacement on thick leisure routes and 2) likely common type rating with the 787. |
Quoting Stitch (Reply 16): I also believe the A350-1000 is a better fit for them then the 777-9. |
Quoting kaitak (Reply 14): I suspect DL will want to aim for simplification and will probably want to see VS move to two types. |
Quoting Stitch (Reply 16): I believe the A380 order has no real influence as I believe it's effectively cancelled and VS has no liabilities related to it. That being said, I also believe the A350-1000 is a better fit for them then the 777-9. |
Quoting BoeingVista (Reply 18): That sound hopeful until you remember that Lufty also bought the 748i and will forever be the only European operator of that type. |
Quoting Prost (Reply 22): For the life of me, I can't figure out how VS route network needs more than one type. Either the 787 or the A350 would fit the bill, but I don't think that they need both. |

Quoting Andy33 (Reply 12): No, they don't. |
Quoting Andy33 (Reply 12): Do Bombardier give discounts to airlines just because they are Canadian, |

Quoting deltal1011man (Reply 25): IMO DL is going to push VS toward Trent 7000/1000/XWB engines. |
Quoting SonomaFlyer (Reply 1): I would expect it to happen but first, their masters at DL must decide what in DL's best interest |
Quoting deltal1011man (Reply 27): I just think that rules out the 777X with only the GE9X engine |

Quoting Beatyair (Reply 36): Virgin is learning the American ways of having lots of smaller planes flying vs the European way of one huge plane flying once. |
Quoting jacobin777 (Reply 35): My guess is we'll eventually see the B789/B787-10/A350JXWB for VS. Maybe the A339 too but I don't see it being in the fleet. |
Quoting JerseyFlyer (Reply 30): I do wonder if this 350 1000 rumour may translate it a 350 1100 launch order |
Quoting RayChuang (Reply 39): |
Quoting Boeing778X (Reply 37): I'm not sure if VS would order either the 787-10 or A330-900neo at this time. IMO, ordering one would make the other redundant. |
Quoting Stitch (Reply 41): Quoting Boeing778X (Reply 37): I'm not sure if VS would order either the 787-10 or A330-900neo at this time. IMO, ordering one would make the other redundant. The A330-900 is already redundant considering the 787-9 offers similar passenger capacity, better cargo capacity and much-improved range (even if VS doesn't need it for TATL, it does offer them flexibility). A 787-9 and A350-1000 fleet would nicely cover their A330-300 and A340-600 missions and would drive up RASM on the 747-400 missions (due to constrained capacity). |
Quoting United Airline (Reply 45): Wonder if they will ever take the A380s. They never cancel the order though |

Quoting sq22 (Reply 32): I found this quite interesting: The other option for Virgin was the Boeing 777 that uses engines made by the US firm General Electric. Sources say Airbus is likely to clinch the order but warned there is still everything to play for. If true it would be interesting to know if 779 or 77W was on offer by Boeing. I would guess the latter one. I think 779 is too big, then they can even take their A380's and 77W would be available quite early which is in general a big advantage compared to the A350. |
Quoting KarelXWB (Reply 48): Apparently RR are offering a better deal on the engine |
