WN May 19 Schedule Release For Nov-Jan 4 Flying.

Sat May 07, 2016 11:50 am

It's that time again for rumors, predictions and speculation.

Only 2 things I'm hearing is increasing weekend Mexico resort SAT only flying.
And MEX Schedule chance with the dropping of 1 MEX-HOU round trip And adding 1 daily MDW-MEX flight.
Also the dropping 1 daily SNA-MEX in favor of using the slot for 1 Daily LAX-MEX flight.

1) 747-8s flying BWI-LHR
2) HOU-SJO-GIG-JFK with no traffic rights on any leg
3) HRL mini-hub for border wall contractors
4) EWR-DSM 2x on CS-300

He wasn't being serious.

This is just a month and a half long extension. I wouldn't expect anything cosmic.

Nope. Not going to happen.

Not going to happen... yet.

It's highly unlikely this schedule is going to have anything new... it'll be the holiday schedule with first flights about 0445-0500 and the last flights departing between 2230-2300.

I believe they are adding 2 more gates. At BNA, it seems like every time WN adds routes/flights, something goes away.

Did anyone else notice Southwest got rid of their interactive route map from their website? You used to be able to access it from their flight schedules page. I keep hoping they moved it to another section of their website, but I can't find it.

Edit: found it. You can either do a search for "Interactive route map" or go to Popular Routes and then at the top of that page click Routes. It used to be a lot easier to access from the Flight Schedules page.

There was just a post on another thread that there will be a press conference at SJC airport on Thursday (5-19), 10am, to 'announce new routes'.

This schedule release could be more interesting than many thought.

Latest rumors? (Hopefully some with some substance...) For example, I wonder if the SAN-FLL rumor is still alive?

That's an interesting angle. With AS talking about displacing WN as Cali's #1 airline, I think you might see a shot across the bow by WN. Not sure where, though. LAX-SEA would hurt WN more than AS!

Also hearing due to Overnight parking fees in SJC they may add 1 daily GEG, 1 BOI and only 1 Daily RNO vs the 2 daily rumored from another source.
So basically the first 3 RON would now turn out PM departures to each city.

But a lot of speculation that WN Is going to add about 25 new Saturday only markets from new cities to CUN,SJD and PVR.

West coast speculation is SMF,LAS,PHX,SJC ,PDX , SLC and OAK will see Service to SJD and PVR.

MDW will see SJD and PVR and gain One daily MEX slot from taking away one MEX-HOU slot.
CUN will see STL,MSP,TPA,PIT and BNA.
STL will see CUN,SJD.

Again this is just hear say rumors and speculation.

We were talking about OAK, and that routes was announced over 3 months ago before oil went back up to $50. The lead time is so long for WN decisions it can be confusing as things are happening now that date from previous strategies often abandoned months ago.

Quoting wnflyguy (Reply 21):
Also hearing due to Overnight parking fees

Amazing OAK has gone from being the high cost airport WN was avoiding to now the lower cost airport? Adding flights to save parking fees seems hard to believe. Parking fees are rarely over $200/night. That's just 2 passenger fares on an added flight, so not much of a contribution to the new flights making money. If they are adding these flights the overnight parking fees hardly make a difference unless they are astronomical like $1k per night which is pretty much impossible.

That was all talked about by the planning people about 3 years ago and went nowhere. In my recent nosing around it didn't seem anything had changed, but Saturdays are not that big a deal so I can see almost anything happening on Sat. Doing that stuff any more than that is pretty unlikely as they are really focused on FLL/HAV/LAX/HOU in that order for international in terms of airplane deployment. Saturday doesn't really count as it doesn't use airplanes the way they look at it.

How much further is PIT-OAK than the already running CMH-OAK? PIT is going to be the new MKE/STL to relieve pressure on BWI.

I'm not sure that I can see 4 carriers on Saturday PIT-CUN service. WN would be really late to the party on that one unless they have a solid travel agent contract(s). I think that would involve taking some contracts from already entrenched agencies. Currently G4 and AA are running 319's and DL an MD88. G4 is completely agent chartered and at least half if not more of the AA and DL seats are as well.

PIT-Bay Area makes more sense. Competition is weak and if they get some subsidy money/support I could see it happening. If it does my 2 cents would be SJC over OAK due to business traffic in the tech sector.

Again, we are talking about whether WN will announce long-hauls NOW. All the other decisions you are talking about were made a long time ago. You act as if WN is the worst managed company ever and doesn't evolve with changing conditions. Oil is higher now than when those routes were announced and I've noticed diminished interest in long flights from them. NK said the same thing in their quarterly call.

Quoting mtnwest1979 (Reply 27):
Since when has WN been avoiding OAK?

If you go back to 2007, WN used to have 142 flights per day from OAK. They opened SFO and moved 44 departures there, cutting OAK to about 92 departures and it hasn't moved since. I've heard it was airport cost in OAK going higher than the revenue benefit of SFO was, which would make sense given the outcome, although VX was also a factor.

I see. I would certainly like to see a SJC- BOI flight. When BOI-SMF started in Jan competing with Alaska/Horizon, I thought they were crazy.
But joke is on me. Loads way higher than I thought, with good percentage local traffic. SJC would be same boat, so may do well if true.

Interesting. I doubt WN is willing to try something like PVD-DEN/LAS/PHX again, so I have a feeling this could very well be international service.. PVD-CUN/MBJ/PUJ anyone? I can't even see the likes of PVD-ATL/BNA/STL happening...

If you want to relieve pressure at BWI, IAD would be a better expansion point than PIT. If WN would pressure MWAA on better fees then I'm sure the authority would be happy to for domestic expansion considering all the domestic passengers its lost to DCA.

DEN and LAS will come back again, but the timing seems off for DEN coming out of the peak season, Everything in Florida with the exception of JAX ECP has service at some point in the year already.

From what I have noticed the airport really doesn't do announcements unless something is truly new, I don't even think AA got one for ORD return... i would expect this to be a route that WN has not previously flown.

If PHX or LAS is ever tried again, WN might as well wait until next year, when with the runway extension open, there should never be a loading issue, regardless of weather for the WB segment. DAL, HOU or STL seem appropriate for PVD now.

This morning, AS announced SAN-SMF and SJC-BUR service starting next March!

I just can't believe there won't be some sort of shot at AS by WN tomorrow (like the LA-SEA mentioned earlier.)

My personal hope is that either AS or WN announces SAN-IND soon -- IMO it's only a matter of time before someone adds the route! (And SEA-IND should be coming real soon as well.)

I will be real disappointed if tomorrow's schedule announcement doesn't contain some jaw-droppers...

I am hoping MHT gets a little LUV from WN. I would be happy to see a few frequency additions perhaps MDW or TPA. For a new route a seasonal MHT-RSW would be a welcome addition. Even if it was weekend only. MHT-DEN I would love to see restored. Just hoping!

My personal hope is that either AS or WN announces SAN-IND soon -- IMO it's only a matter of time before someone adds the route! (And SEA-IND should be coming real soon as well.)

Me too! With the AS/VX merger I would love if AS added IND-SAN/SEA/SFO that would be a great lineup.

As for the schedule release tomorrow I don't see any announcements from IND. IND-SAN could be a possibility in this extension as demand between the cities is pretty consistent throughout the year unlike SEA which is more seasonal.. Maybe a 1x weekly IND-CUN in time for winter.

From press conference via a tweet, LAX is suppose to get nonstops to CUN, PVR, SJD by Nov. WN applying for the routes end of May so this probably won't be in the schedule released tomorrow.

MDW will see SJD and PVR and gain One daily MEX slot from taking away one MEX-HOU slot.

With AA out of ORD-MEX, WN has a chance at offering MDW-MEX. I see WN offering PVR 2-3 weekly, and SJD 2x weekly or Saturday only service.

Is BWI that maxed out?

It's not that it's "maxed out", per se, but the operational impact that even relatively minor weather events has on the DC Metros really takes it's toll on the operation. IMO, pulling back some of the reliance on BWI in favor of a nearby airport outside of the J6/J213/J42/J75 corridor would do wonders for WN's operational reliability.

MCAA made a whole big deal about looking for an airline they could subsidize to pick up ROC-RSW a few weeks ago in an online release of their annual meeting. Considering they aren't too friendly with G4 right now, and I don't see B6 hopping on, I wouldn't be surprised to see RSW as at least SAT only service for the winter announced.
