Airlines That Haul US Mail

Tue May 03, 2016 8:18 pm

Just wondering if anyone knows which airlines still handle US Mail? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems as though most of the volume goes to carriers like Fedex these days

Several of the passenger carriers stopped carrying First Class mail when the USPS imposed a variety of reporting, performance and scanning requirements that would have required capital expenditures and ended the virtually-unmonitored system that had existed before, apparerntly hoping that these requirements would blow over. They didn't, and virtually all the majors are back on board.

Express Mail (now called Priority Mail Express) and Priority Mail 2-Day move in air containers loaded by the USPS at their own facilities and unloaded by the USPS at their own facilities. They are generally shipped intact on FedEx flights, but IIRC, UPS also has some contracts for some work for the USPS, just not on Express Mail and Priority Mail. FedEx won a sole-source contract worth $1.5 billion per year for seven years, starting in October 2014. This modified a previous long-term FedEx-USPS contract for carrying the same products.

This is a couple years old but may be helpful to you:

http://www.huschblackwell.com/~/medi...0Suppliers/USPSsuppliersFY2013.pdf

FedEx did $1,775,554,309.54 of business in FY '13.
Kalitta, $304,677,636.61
United, $169,586,939.32
UPS, $129,303,306.02
Delta, $98,279,312.07
American, $53,851,107.71
Alaska, $33,541,626.59
Japan Airlines, $27,542,802.85
US Airways, $26,703,016.15
DHL, $9,396,539.61

There are probably other air carriers in that list that didn't jump out at me. And, for the passenger carriers, some of the dollar amount was probably business travel for USPS staff as well.

I'm surprised JAL is on the list, considering the USPS's requirements for crew that comes in contact with US mail.

Didn't the USPS lease several 727s (100/200s) back in the 80s and 90s? I seem to recall seeing a 727 decked out in a USPS livery at DFW back in the mid-90s.

The USPS used to have its own network for Express Mail, including an air component which was provided by Ryan International Airlines under contract to the USPS. Those were Ryan 727s, painted in USPS colors. The USPS made a groundbreaking deal with FedEx to take all the Express Mail in USPS containers on FedEx flights, and thus provide the airlift by container rather than by flight. USPS paid a lot of money for that, but it was apparently cheaper than running their own air network, and ultimately has worked well for them.

Kalitta's big contract is, I believe, largely for overseas military mail, primarily to the Sandbox. Kailitta also provides significant airlift, particularly to places like Puerto Rico and Hawaii, during Peak Season.

It's probably mail destined for Asia in some capacity and requirements for handling on the US side would meet that of every other carrier out there.

I'd say that's a safe bet. Kalitta is always at McGuire and I also see them at all the sandbox places.
