Superjet-100 - 5 Years In Action

Sat Apr 23, 2016 5:04 pm

April 21 there were 5 years since SSJ-100 had started her commercial operations.

Just few photos and facts from SSJ-100 history:

First prototypes - 97001 and 97003. Interesting combination with Tu-334, which was SSJ internal competitor. It was first MAKS for SSJ and last for Tu-334. Later the final decision was taken to support SSJ.

Largest users:
Aeroflot - 27 (23 TBD)
Interjet - 21 (9TBD)
Gazpromavia - 10

Perspective major users:
Yamal - 25
SCAT - 15
CityJet - 10

Number of built - 108

The SSJ fate is not really easy indeed. As the first post-Soviet era Russian plane originally created without roots from USSR and based on the new market principles, SSJ still have things to improve and challenges to pass. However UAC - SSJ producer do not give up and project is going to be developed. Hope I'll be able to bring some new staff after nest 5 year.

Regards,

Fyodor

It's a great little plane. I hope to fly on one soon and I wish the West would get over the stigma of Russian airliners being dangerous.

Interjet is thrilled with theirs. They have something like 99% dispatch reliability. From a passenger perspective, the Interjet ones are really comfy. The 2-3 layout is always very nice, and the legroom is unbelievably generous. I flew SJD-TLC last year on one of them and I loved the experience. I was very comfortable throughout the entire flight.

Something wrong with flag.
Cityjet will actually be renamed back to its old name..... VLM and this is a Belgian carrier based in Antwerp but with operations much broader then the ANR hub.

I know there was a delay in the LR certification but from what i understood first SSJ100 is still expected this year. Having flown the SU SSJ several times I can only say i look forward to see it operate within Europe. It's a great little airplane even though that engine sound takes some getting used to lol

Quoting fvtu134 (Reply 5):

Cityjet was never named VLM. Cityjet started operations in 1994 with two BAe146-200s and built up their fleet initially operating for Virgin between Dublin and London City. They went through various owners and recently were bought by the original founder, Pat Byrne. They took over VLM at one stage, but they were separated about two years ago and VLM is independent again.

Does the LR have winglets included? I remember reading somewhere that the WX aircraft would eventually receive winglets, post-delivery.

Not for the moment. They test winglets now and I think both versions will have it.

.
At the MAKS 2015 Airshow, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC) has announced that the new version of the Sukhoi SuperJet 100 (SSJ 100) regional aircraft, with the more powerful engines, range extension and winglets, will join the family (SSJ100-95, SSJ100-95B, SSJ100-95LR and SSJ100-95SBJ) and will be designated as SSJ100 V100. Installing of the higher thrust engines, developed for the long-range version of the jet, on the aircraft having the same takeoff weight will allow the customers to have more flexibility in terms of aircraft configuration. Optimization of its characteristics allows operating SSJ100 under conditions of high temperatures and high altitudes.

The new model was developed in order to provide the jet with the new capabilities required by the customers in some specific geographical regions. The major distinctive feature of the SSJ100 V100 aircraft is the higher thrust engine - PowerJet SaM146-1S18 (architecture: F+3LPC-6HPC ^ 1HPT-3LPT), 1.224 mm / 48,2 in fan diameter, rated at 79,00 kN / 8.056 kgf / 17.760 lbf, offered as an option for the liner having the basic range. The takeoff thrust was increased thanks to the adjustments made to the engine’s software developed by the PowerJet (50/50 joint venture between Snecma S.A. and NPO Saturn).

.

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC) gradually expands its product line, and in the addition to the existing members of SSJ100 family, having different takeoff weights and ranges, it is going to offer another model to its customers, the one with the the basic takeoff weight, but improved takeoff performance.

The technical solutions used for the development of the new model may become a deciding factor for some users because an opportunity to increase payload while operating the aircraft from airfields located in mountainous regions could be of a great importance to them. First of all, this refers to South and Central Africa, where many airports are located in mountainous regions. India and China are also of the great importance for the program because these countries have high passenger traffic and many airports are located in mountainous regions too. Average height of these airports is over 1.500 m above the sea level; that is why they need a liner with relatively low takeoff weight and high thrust engines. Moreover, the new aircraft will be in demand in countries with hot and humid climate. Taking into account the performance of the SSJ100 V100, it may also meet the requirements of the European carriers, which have many airports with short runways in their route network.

.

SSJ100 V100 will have the range of 3.048 km / 1.893 mi, maximum takeoff weight of 45.880 kg / 101.148 lb and the takeoff distance 10% shorter compared to the basic version.

Since 2017 a new wingtips will be offered as an option for all SSJ100 airliners; the wingtips will improve the jet’s performance and fuel efficiency. The wingtips’ design optimization, including calculations and testing carried out using wind tunnels of TsAGI and SibNIA. Several variants having vertical or horizontal configuration were considered. The work took around one and a half years. A junction between the wing and the wingtip has been designed as well as the composite wingtip itself. At present a manufacturer is being chosen; probably one of the Russian enterprises involved in SSJ100 program will start the mass production of these wingtips. The wingtips will deliver up to 4 % in fuel savings. Moreover, the optimized wingtips should improve the takeoff and landing performance. Business - SSJ100-95SBJ and long-range versions - SSJ100-95LR of the SSJ100 liner will also be fitted with the wingtips.

.

Personally, I believe that, in addition to the mentioned aerodynamic improvements of the plane, there is a room for the aircraft´s further optimization and efficiency improvement, primarily through the replacement of its engines. The current engines, PowerJet SaM146, largely based on . CFM56 engine, is an reliable and well proven engine, but the one which in its efficiency lags behind the new generation of the engines.

Possible engine options? Aviadvigatel PD-10 (architecture: F+1LPC-8HPC ^ 2HPT+5LPT) twin-shaft turbofan, fan diameter 1.677 mm / 66,02 in, rated at 106,89 kN / 10.900 kgf / 24.030 lbf, based on the new OAO Aviadvigatel´s PD-14 engine, aimed for the Irkut MS-21 aircraft or maybe Pratt & Whitney PW1217G (applied on Mitsubishi MRJ) geared turbofan (architecture: F]G[2LPC-8HPC ^ 2HPT-3LPT), fan diameter 1.422 mm / 56 in, rated at 78,20 kN / 7.974 kgf / 17.580 lbf. Frankly, I am inclined to the belief that the Sukhoi, in order to make SSJ100 as the all-Russian aircraft, will reach for this first mentioned option, but we´ll see. There is no doubt that Sukhoi SSJ100 is a terrific aircraft with a bright future...

Nice regards

Although commercially it might no become a success, the SSJ100 has proved the prowess of modern Russia engineering. With that said, maybe the upgrades to a nextgen engine and a stretched version might give new impetus to the project. I also see a potential market for the SSJ100 in Central and South America, Sukhoi and SJI need to sort out financing and leasing issues for this to happen.

Can't wait to see what the MS-21 will be capable of.

The new variant, even with the old tech engines could make MEX-SFO (with no winds on the up route). Think the 3000KM range makes it a very interesting aircraft considering its confort and cheap operation.

i flew on the SSJ about a year ago, on red wings and aeroflot. i was impressed by the plane and what really surprised me the most is its looks and feel. while more modern russian developments such as the AN-148 (the VASO bult ones) still are "soviet" from their looks, feel and smell, the SSJ is a modern airliner. in terms of passenger comfort it is a step ahead of any 737 or 320, and felt better than the E-Jets. it is a supermodern airliner, nicely manufactured and clearly three decades ahead of the AN-148 or early built TU-204.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0AIdb4Xvu0

for the russian aviation industry, this is such a leap forward, that one can say their products can compete or are even better than current western airliners.

BUT for us enthusiasts this means, that the thrilling russian rides are getting rarer by the second. the SSJ is the best aircraft for many airlines in Russia and most probably other parts in the world, but for us enthusiasts the TU-134 would still be the transport of choice...

in any case, the west will have to gather all political momentum to keep this airliner from being more successful, economics speak clearly for it (in it's market). there are some into deep analysis on the airliner in the web, that show up the advantages of this airframe in each detail, and its minor weaknesses. if the SSJ can incorporate more modern engines, it should perform superbly in comparison to the (technologically and aerodynamically) inferior embraers and be a serious competitor for the C-Series. The C-Series is still a bit of an own category, and from what i had the feeling while taking a closer look at it, is like a rolls royce. everything is really fancy and built to esthetic perfection. you are even afraid to touch it because you might break this beauty  ... but in the end, there are not very many rolls royce cabs around, and currently not a lot of CS either.

in the end i would say, leaving politics aside, the it's market the SSJ is the best aircraft currently. if you have a lot o cash and want to build up ops around a acft family, go for the C-Series. and for all the others (and there is many without cash) go for the E-Jets.

How tru is it... Sadly latest civilian are going to finish to fly this year. Might be a luck they will stay on routes in 2017 but there are very few chances.
