JFK - Which Gates Are A380 Ready?

Mon Apr 18, 2016 5:20 pm

Seeing some A380s at JFK, but all seem to be at T1 and T4, as these are the terminals that the A380 airlines are serving anyway.

Which got me to think: how many A380 ready gates does JFK have, and which ones are those? At T1 I believe it's gates 8 and 7. Then there are two stands at T4 - which? And are there any others?

Only four A380 gates at an airport like JFK, that's surprisingly few.

Not really.

There's

5 EK
1 KE
1 AF
1 LH seasonal
1 Singapore
1 Ethiad (which has the best 380 paint job imo)

How many more gates do you want for 10 flights per day?

T8 can easily add for Qatar if they wanted to and T7 has plenty of space as well if BA decided to bring it in. Just need to add a jetway with a ramp down.

There are 2 at terminal 1 and 2 at Terminal 4.

The Emirates gate has a dedicated jetbridge from the lounge.

The other gate at the end of T4 A (across from EK) has 3 jetbridges but the third one is a movable up and down bridge that connects to the same level as the first two jetbridges.

I believe Emirates has "only" 4 flights a day. But don't forget Asiana's A380, also at T4.

An A380 at T7 would be pretty tight--even if it could park there, the gate areas and immigration facilities really aren't adequate. They already get overwhelmed by a couple of 747/777s. I definitely wouldn't say there's "plenty of space."

The old UA gates.

Gates 11 and 12 are widebody, domestic gates. If you look at the diagram there is plenty of ramp space for that to be converted to 1 380 gate if desired. It would need to get connected to the lower level customs. Very doable if desired.

As I write this at 515 ET, there are 5 BA 747s, 1 BA open skies 757, 1 BA 318, 1 ANA 777, and 1 Qantas 747. The terminal can handle a 380 load of pax.

The point is moot though...rumor around JFK...T7s future lies with B6. We'll see what happens. I remember when T5s future lay with UA. Wasnt that long ago either

If T7 is going JetBlue where is BA going ? AA T8. JFK needs to address the old Pan Am T3 sight with a new terminal attached to T1 or T4. Where are all the old IAB airlines, seems most are at T1 which can't handle all those airlines. JFK needs more terminals desperately and there seems to be no rush from the PANYNJ. The T3 site has been empty for years now so build something on it please.

There's also one Asiana. They use T4 I think?

They use B29 in T4. T4 has 3 A380 gates (B29, A6, and A7)

B29, A6 and A7 are 3 a380 capable gates in terminal 4. A6 has three jetways, one connecting from the upper lounge level(level 4), and B29 has 2 jetways, one which swings from the lower level (level 2) of the passenger boarding ramp to the upper level of the passenger boarding ramp (level3) in order to acces the upper level. (In the international area of terminal 4 passengers board by going down the switch back ramps down to aircraft level, which is even with the the customs level. When international aircraft arrive, passengers are barred from going up the ramp to the domestic area.)

And I believe KE has both daily flights on the 388. So the count should be:

AF x2
LH x1
EK x4
EY x2
KE x2
OZ x1
SQ x1

That's 13 per day.

Nope, most of the B concourse is Delta, and Virgin America has a couple gates in A. Sun Country also used to go to T4 but I'm not sure if they still do anymore.

I know they have none spare and it's a short flight. But I do think BA has missed a trick not putting its flagship plane on its flagship route.
Poor marketing thinking IMHO.Beancounters rule I imagine.

KE 81/82 and KE 85/86 are both A388 atm although KE85/86 is often swapped around between A388 and 748

Isn't it at DL's discretion to build something on the old T3 ramp? They said they wanted T3 gone, and the ramp is for DL aircraft only, so its seems DL has the decision to build a new terminal. Someone correct me on this.

Right, I get that there are domestic flights that operate from T4, but I thought the whole terminal was international-capable. Are there gates that don't funnel into the FIS?

At least on the B side, the domestic flights have a separate tunnel back into the terminal instead of going to the FIS. I don't think there are any INTL-only gates except for the RJ extension at the end of B.
