IB To Start MAD-PVG On June 28, 2016

Mon Apr 18, 2016 10:37 am

IB has announced today that they will start flying to PVG sooner than it was initially planned. Flights will start now on June 28, 2016, which is also the day when MU resumes PVG-MAD.

Flights will operate 3 weekly.

IB6889 MAD1250 – 0710PVG+1 332 257
IB6888 PVG1100 – 1840MAD 332 136

MU schedule is:

MU709 PVG1215 – 2045MAD 332 x135
MU710 MAD2255 – 1820+1PVG 332 x135

IB is also launching NRT from OCT18 and resuming SJU and JNB this summer. BOS, which usually ends at OCT, is extended until DEC.

On the other side, IB is cancelling IST, LOS (due to the oil market crisis, according to IB) and ACC (due to poor results).

Wow finally... two carriers starting MAD-PVG the same day... quite incredible.   But on the other hand there are Chinese tourists everywhere in Spain now, and more going with the unrest in France and Belgium.

So IB remaining routes in Africa must be ALG, CMN, JNB, LAD, RAK, TNG and SSG. I recall they chopped RBA and however the Mauritanian capital is called not long ago. I wonder about LAD and SSG, those are very oil dependent markets.

Btw I just noticed Israir is starting MAD... when was that announced? I haven't read anything about it. It seems this year traffic from Israel to Spain will be booming with at least 3 new routes.

I think JNB will be A332 and Narita maybe too, but NRT is quite long so I'd not be surprise if they use A340 or a mix of both.

It is, and the fight started even before the first flight, I hope we see PEK soon in IB metal.
Spanish airports are going for a record year if they continue like this, MAD and surroundings are awesome for tourist, not long ago I went to Avila, Segovia and Toledo and I saw plenty of Chinese, Japanese and many Indian tourist. EK is also doing great in Spain, with 3 daily A380 and 1 B77W to MAD and BCN.
Soon also MAD will get a link to HKG with CX.

LOS and ACC have never been too good in IB network, but I though LOS was a good market, IST is basically most of it for tourist and with the current situation in that side it's not a surprise that IB leaves, but IST is still well served by TK. '

NRT will get the A332 as well, remember these are the 242t version so well capable of such long flights.

Wow, it's great to see these bold moves from IB. Asian destinations have come earlier than many anticipated, and have taken even IB workers by surprise. It's not so long ago that even members here were proclaiming that IAG was dismantling Iberia  .
On the other hand, it seems that the strategy of diversification into Africa has not worked for Iberia. That is a shame. Let's hope that JNB can work better with the new competitive structure brought in by IAG, and that these make PVG and NRT succeed. However, it's clear that LatAm remains the airline's forte.

The flights seem well-timed for connections on to Latin America. A few weeks ago I flew from Amsterdam to Guayaquil on KLM and was amazed about the number of Chinese passengers (particularly in business class) flying to/from Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou etc... For obvious reasons, seems Europe is a much prefered alternative route than going through the US.

Those two flights also had some negotiations with the unions, as Chinese and Japanese-speaking FAs have been hired for PVG and NRT respectively.

About Accra, British Airways operates a daily service, while Vueling operates weekly service from Barcelona, in code share with Iberia. It's probably enough for IAG.

Furthermore since 2014, Ghana recorded a lower growth, a fall of its currency and the rise of its debt. They requested IMF help, last year. Virgin Atlantic ceased its Accra service, last year

Iberia uses an A319 to Lagos, very hard to compete with Air France A330-200s & B777-200ER/300ER or KLM A330-300sor Boeing 777-200ER. Furthermore Lagos, is well connected from USA, which is a big market for Nigeria.

Don't forget that Royal Air Maroc (which serves both Accra & Lagos) has code share agreements with Iberia between Casablanca and Spain. Last informations has showed that Royal Air Maroc could join Oneworld

JNB is with A330-300, starting August, 3 weekly.
A while ago there was a 4th flight scheduled to commence from November with A332, but now seems to be removed again.

It only makes sense. Spain was the colonial power there historically. The same goes for AF, SN, KL in Africa and BA in North America. What would be interesting to see would be a further expansion into the Asian market with the addition of MNL. PR used to operate an MNL-MAD route a while ago, and seeing as how the Philippines was a Spanish colony this might be a good seasonal route for IB.

Philippines is not popular for Spaniards. There is a small Filipino community in Spain, but not larger than many other European countries. That flight would be a nonsense. And MNL is a top destination for ME3 and now also served by TK.

Those flights to China and Japan are clearly targeted to Asian tourists to Spain, in addition to some business and Spanish tourists.

The cultural and economic links between Spain and the Philippines amount to little more than a short paragraph in high-school history books these days.
