Thanks for the link.

As was discussed in another thread, EDW has publicly hinted that it's thinking about starting flights to HNL. They also stated that other additional destinations are being studied. My best guess (maybe also wishful thinking) would be ANC, SEA, MBJ, Southern Carribean (AUA, SXM, FDF or similar), WDH, CMB. What do you think?

is there any news about HB-JBC? It was supposed to have been delivered already. I'm aware there are trouble with engine supply, but is a new date known?

One user in a Swiss aviation forum speculates that HB-JBC will be delivered next weekend (I suppose this means the weekend of 1st and 2nd of October).

In other news, Swiss has today confirmed that the entire A333 fleet will also receive Wifi capabilities in the near future. However, the same outrageous prices will continue to be charged.

Also, the FOCA has today unveiled its plans for the so-called SIL 2 process, which basically sets the boundaries for the operational concept at Zurich airport. They propose to allow planes departing from Rwy16 in case of wind from eastern direction or in case of fog to turn right immediately after departure or to continue straight. Around 13000 movements are estimated to be using this departure route, which at the present time is not allowed. This proposal will cause huge outrage in the communities south of the airport as they have long advocated against the "RWY16 Straight" procedure. Furthermore, FOCA proposes altered routes on the RWY28 departure (closer separation due to earlier right-hand turn) and on the traditional RWY16 Left departure (longer left-hand curve allowing higher overfly of the airport). In addition, runways 28 and 32 are expected to be lengthened to 3700m and 2900m respectively and a taxiway around runway 28 (in the vicinity of the REGA emergency services base) is expected to be built. All of these measures are expected to increase air space safety around ZRH while at the same time decreasing delays due to too much conflicting traffic in the air and on the ground.

Is there a confirmation on how many A343 will be retained and refurbished? Last I heard was 5 (with 4 going to EDW -JMG, F, E and D).
Together with (only) 9 77W on order (or is the speculated no. 10 confirmed?) scheduling as many flights as this year will be impossible - where 12 A343 and 6 77W were planned.

Maybe more information becomes available after tomorrow's LH supervisory board's meeting.

Brgds,
Ka.

According to this article, Swiss orders 1 additional 77W and wil keep the A340-300 longer in the fleet:

The A340-300 will receive a new cabin.

According to Geneva Airport's winter timetable for 2016/2017, here are the changes in scheduled flights. This is based on my own statistics; there are probably some mistakes.

New airlines:

Air Berlin (to DUS)
AirBaltic (to RIX, from summer 2017. They already tried in 2009)

Lost airlines:

Chalair (to ANR & PGF)
Tarom (to OTP)

New destinations:

Fuerteventura (by U2) - winter only
Ibiza (by F7) - formerly summer only (by F7 & U2), now all year
Inverness (by U2) - winter only
Krakow (by U2) - all year
Palermo (by U2) - formerly summer only, now all year
Parma de Mallorca (by U2) - formerly summer only (LX & U2, if not mistaken), now all year
Riga (by BT) - all year
Salzbourg (by EW) - all year

Destinations lost:

Anvers (by CE)
Biarritz (by A5) - was formerly almost all year by Hop! (if not mistaken), now summer only (A5, F7 & LX)
Cluj-Napoca (by W6)
Cork (by EI) - was winter only
Perpignan (by CE)
Skopje (by LX)

New competition:

Birmingham (formerly U2, now U2 & BE, both winter only)
Düsseldorf (formerly EW only, now EW & AB)
Glasgow (formerly U2, now U2 & LS, both winter only)
Munich (formerly LH only, now LX & U2)

Competition lost:

Algiers (formerly LX & AH, now AH only)
Belfast (formerly U2 & LS, now U2, winter only)
Bucharest (formerly RO & W6, now W6 only)
Florence (formerly LX & F7, now LX only)
Francfort (formerly LH & KU, now LH only)
Göteborg (formerly LX & SK, now LX, winter only)
London Gatwick (MT flights, winter only, become charter - not bookable online anymore, to the contrary of Bristol, still bookable)
Lugano (formerly LX & F7, now F7 only)
Venice (formerly U2 & F7, now U2 only)

There is also a scheduled GVA-PRN by Germania (every saturday from November 5th), but it doesn't seem to be bookable. And the new GVA-MUC by U2 was advertised as an all year flight, but is currently not bookable after March 2017.
Other change: LX will stop operating Austrian's Q400 (in Star Alliance livery) to Lugano (destination lost), Florence & Valence, and switch to its own metal.
I didn't indicate frequency changes.

I think the most notable change is the disappearance of competition in a lot of routes. LX and F7 seem to have buried the hatchet: LX leave F7 alone on one of its most important market (GVA-LUG), and F7 abandons GVA-FLR to LX (and GVA-VCE to U2).

Today was the first time an LX CS1 came to Hamburg. HB-JBB came by to say hello. The HAM Facebook page announced its arrival yesterday, so I went there to see her in the flesh. The wings were quite impressive for an aircraft its size, but I guess it's because the C-Series was built with a stretch in mind. The aircraft was incredibly silent with those new Pratts.

Any word on whether LX will send more CS1s to HAM or to Germany in general?

And some other news:

- Eurowings will not start the planned flights between SZG and ZRH (planned 6x weekly) and to GVA (planned 4x weekly)
- Vueling will terminate its flights between ZRH and LTN and will start flights to Prague (3 weekly from 2 June 2017) and to Palma de Mallorca (3 weekly from 6 June). It seems as though EZY has won the battle between ZRH and LTN (including a frequency increase)
- Delta will upgauge its seasonal flight between ZRH and ATL from B767-300ER to B767-400ER

- Iberia will start 6 weekly flights between BSL and MAD using A319 aircraft

- EZY is poised to announce new routes from Switzerland (news can be expected for all three airports, including a 10th aircraft to be based at BSL)

GVA-IBZ year round is interesting.

Ibiza is becoming a more "year-round" destination. Traffic growth in October - already shoulder season - was +33% (already from a record Oct '15). GVA is Ibiza's third international destination in winter after LCY (BA) and EIN (Transavia).

IBZ is also getting winter flights with ALC (YW and VY), VLC (YW) and SVQ (VY); so I suspect winter traffic will explode this season.

I wonder if they are waiting HB-JBD to name them together "Kanton Bern" and "Kanton Basel", and avoid jealousy between Basel and Bern.
That would be laughable (but very Swiss-ish!), because they didn't wait JBB (Geneva) to name JBA "Kanton Zurich"...

Hello,
Anyone have any idea why the HB-JNE operated the LX180 from ZRH to BKK on 20th Feb has diverted to Baku? Seems a very strange place to divert a 77W?
It stayed there for some 24 hours before continuing.

I wonder why they don't name the 777 fleet, the new "flagship" comparable to the 747 back in the days, after the major cantons. Instead, these names go to the C Series.

As already said, JNE diverted to GYD due to a Medical Emergency. The aircraft was already far in Turkmenistan airspace when it turned around heading to Baku.
HB-JNE was on ground in GYD for 2:25 hrs. (Not 24 hours!)
HB-JNE reached BKK with a delay of 5:43 hrs (because it left ZRH already with a delay of 1:15 hrs).

This seems not to have been a successful Entry into service, first commercial flight and already tech, probably software related issues?

I'm not sure if LX1348 was her first commercial flight. So far I have no info about the reason for the diversion. The flight turned around in the region of St. Pölten (Austria).

That was obvious. For medical cases you land at nearest possible Airport. In that case would have been VIE. That they returned to ZRH shows it was not "a serious" issue.

Do any of our Swiss aviation thread friends thin LX will order any additional 77W'S this year? If so,how many and on what routes do you see the need for the 77W'S capacity to be needed? If not more 77W'S, what will LX order to renew their fleet when it is time? The A350-900 or 787-900? I think either would be a good fit for LX when the decision is made.

I have heard from a friend who used to work at MK that they are going to reopen Geneva but only seasonally.

As for IR I think that the transportation minister from Iran made it clear that this used to be a very profitable route and that they might reopen it as soon as they have enough jets.

I am a bit more concerned about ET. I guess that time will tell. I remember last time an ET 767 flew to GVA, the co-pilot is still there... lol

I fare as I know no more 77W'S are in the pipe line as they already are a big jump into capacity.

A359 seems to be what should replace the A333 fleet, but this is.l not happening for a long time!

I don't see any new widebody orders for the time being. The remaining 340's still have plenty of life left in them and are fully paid for. The 330's are all under 10 years of age, so they are nowhere near the end of their career at LX. The 77W fleet will be strong enough for the time being.
Full airplanes is one, but to fill them against decent yields is a different story.

First replacements will have to be for the older 320's & 321's but AFAIK there are already some NEO's in the LH-orderbook for LX. Not sure though. The 319's will eventually be replaced by CS300's.

I do wonder if LX needs something smaller than de CS100's. I can imagine that they could use some more Q400's or equivalent for opening up new destinations which can contribute to the LongHaul-network.

An eventual A330 replacement is due 2030-2035. The A340s are being refurbished to the 77W cabin until spring 2018 and they are all going to get WiFi during refurbishment. And with 2 77W being delivered each this and next year we currently have a pretty up-to-date fleet. So I think this is it on the long haul side of things.

Swiss currently has 10 A320neo and 5 A321neo on its order book, starting with deliveries in 2019. And lastly the AVRO replacement is well underway. With only 7 left, they are expecting at least 1 CSeries every month during 2017 with CS300 deliveries starting in Q2.

The 5x A319's will definitely be replaced by the C Series.
First A319 (HB-IPT) leaving the fleet by end of this year. The other four will follow in Q1/2018 and early Q2/2018.

Some news from recent weeks concerning Swiss aviation

Belair will cease all operations at the end of March 2017. Some aircraft have already left the fleet. The flight crews (roughly 200) are rumoured to be offered the opportunity to work for Austrian/Eurowings Europe for the next 12 months. Air Berlin will continue to operate flights from ZRH to DUS, TXL, GWT (Sylt) and OLB in Summer 17. Most holiday flights (previously operated by Belair) will be operated by Niki (most likely using A321 aircraft). Destinations requiring Swiss AOC (Hurghada, Antalya, Marsa Alam) will be terminated. Other destinations not being operated in S17 when compared to S16, according to this https://flights.airberlin.com/de-DE/die-neue-airberlin#streckennetz, are Alicante, Catania and Napoli.

New routes & capacity changes

ZRH:
- Air China is expected to start flights between PEK and ZRH. An announcement is expected to be made during the state visit of the Chinese President in Bern tomorrow.
- Easyjet will expand once again from ZRH with three new destinations being added in S17: NAP (three weekly from 13 May), VCE (four weekly from 10 May) and NCE (three weekly from 10 June). All flights will be operated by Easyjet UK using planes based at these three airports. EZY will also go from 6 to 10 weekly flights between ZRH and SXF.
- As part of the restructuring, Niki will terminate flights between VIE and ZRH in February. The route will in effect become a monopoly route for the LH group. OS will increase the number of flights between VIE and ZRH to 7 (previously 4) and LX will increase to five daily flights (previously 4).
- Oman Air will increase the number of flights to MCT to daily and also use the larger 787-9 on one flight per week
- KE will use its new B787-9 aircraft on its three weekly service between ICN and ZRH starting on 3 Oct 2017
- QR will change its equipment on the ZRH-DOH route replacing the B787-8 with daily A350-900 service starting on 01 May 2017
- BA will upgauge one of its daily LHR flights to B767 in S17 according to a user in a Swiss aviation forum
- Germania will fly twice weekly between ZRH and Nis in S17

BSL:
- Air Berlin will no longer offer flights from BSL. In S16 it operated to PMI (2 to 3 daily), HER, IBZ and MLA (serveral times weekly). These flights will not be taken up by Niki
- Wizzair will increase capacity on its routes to WAW and OTP by using A321s instead of A320s and by offering a third weekly frequency to CLJ, OTP and WAW. The airline will also start twice weekly flights between BSL and Osjiek (Croatia)
- Skywork will split its BRN-BSL-LCY route to a BSL-LCY and BRN-LCY terminator service (BSL will continue to see 11 weekly frequencies while BRN will decrease to four weekly flights)
- EZY will add Dubrovnik and Biarritz to its list of destinations from BSL in S17. Both destinations will be served twice weekly
- Eurowings will begin flights to PMI earlier and at a higher frequency than previously announced (four weekly flights from the beginning of April). Eurowings will also offer six weekly flights between BSL and MUC as part of its expansion to Munich
- Small Planet Germany will fly once weekly between LCA and BSL
- Arkia will offer charter services between BSL and TLV (once weekly)

I heared from a friend that LX will receive all 10 A320neo and 5 A321neo aircraft in 2019. Can anyone confirm that? Has the engine type been selected already? I guess they go with the PW1100 to share commoniality with the PW1500 of the CS fleet.

SIN will receive daily B77W service from FEB17 on. Any other destinations planned for the 77W once all 10 are delivered? GRU, SFO?
