EI 757 Emergency Landing At JFK

Tue Sep 29, 2015 2:11 am

Just heard it on Pix News.

An Aer Lingus 757 bound for Shannon returned to JFK because of a hydraulic issue. Upon landing everyone survived and got off safely, no passenger suffered any injury.

Never declared emergency.

Failure of one of the hydraulic systems. After faster than normal landing, hydraulic fluid leaked onto the hot brakes and caused a small fire that was quickly extinguished.

Looks like they deplaned via airstairs. No flaps and lots of fuel for the transatlantic flight meant fast and heavy landing. Fire is never good though, probably not a quick fix....

Hello all,

First off, great job to the flight crew for their landing and the fire crews for their quick actions.
@shamrock137, please look at the picture in the link. The slats and flaps are down.
The gear door is down also. Maybe a problem on the right hydraulic system? I defer to those that would know...

Part of the ATC audio was put out this morning to the news media. Apparently there was a partial hydraulic failure. A picture of the flight route showed that failure was noticed by tthey got to about Eastern Long Island, then it made a series of tight loops, likely to burn up fuel and figure out what was wrong over central LI, then came back to JFK. Apparently a leak of hydraulic fluid did flow down to the landing gear on one side, and set on fire when the brakes put on upon landing.

They have only been part of AIG five minutes and they are already falling apart...the doom mongers must have been right all along.

I heard they lost one hydraulic system. Any ideas about what caused this?
Glad to hear everyone survived

Am not sure what an insurance company has to do with this incident!!

No flaps and lots of fuel for the transatlantic flight meant fast and heavy landing.

The flaps and slats can be extended/retracted by an alternate flap/slat electric motor system. It's a lot slower than the normal hydraulic system but a hydraulic failure won't keep one from using the flaps/slats on a B757.

More likely a problem with the left hydraulic system. The inner MLG doors are open indicating the gear was lowered via alternate extension.

Lots of things can cause this but it's most likely a component failure. A cracked hydraulic line or a failed actuator or other component would be my first thought.

Cheers,

John

I saw this very 757 take off from 13R before sunset while waiting to board DL456, a 738, at B20 (Terminal 4) for a flight back home to AUS. On taxi to the same rwy in the dark about an hour later my wife and I saw about a dozen emergency vehicles race SE and wondered what the fuss was about...aha.

Question: what rwy did it land on, if anyone knows?

Quoting shamrock137 (Reply 3):
Looks like they deplaned via airstairs.

And I see some pax with their luggage...seems to happen without fail...sigh.

ETA: looks like it landed on 22L. That explains why the emergency vehicles were racing SE-bound, parallel to rwy 13R/31L.

I know we see that all the time with emergency evacuations, and it's really dumb, but...in this case, since they were coming down the stairs, which take time to set up next to the plane, was it not considered an emergency evacuation, so taking luggage wouldn't have been an issue? Not sure of the specifics.

Isn't the 757 fleet actually run by Air Contractors as a Wet Lease?

Good point; I stand corrected and thank you for pointing that out. Curious as to the specifics myself, too.

So glass half full / empty? Can never tell on here with these sorts of gigs.

Yup, contracted flight deck with Aer lingus cabin crew after they took a new contract with worse T/Cs with the threat of AG doing the cabin as well.

Hello all,

@boeingfixer/John, thanks for that. Didn't know about the nosewheel steering issue when I posted. That illustrates part of the left system.

I stand corrected...

Landing was 'normal' (if a little heavier than usuall) not 'emergency, as was the disembarking, which used airstairs s they stopped on to allow emergency services to sort out the very hot brakes and hydraulic fluid combo.

Cabin crew still on EI T&C's. They acceded to 4 cabin crew.
I believe similar US carriers have 5-6 on their B757 doing T/A sectors.
