Hellu, can anyone tell me if there will be any new PIPs introduced? And how many have there been until today? IIRC in 2013 Boeing introduced the first PIP on a 748F for CX.

Interesting coincidence: after the 747-8 landed in VCV, the BOE77 flight number was assigned to a 737-8 test flight out of BFI. Clicking on the FlightAware link now takes one to the 737-8 flight. Confusion reigned until I figured that out!

The purpose of my post was to explain the history of the airframes i.e. one was the well-known Seahawks plane, the other two are new builds.

I don't think there is a delay. Due to the low production rate, Boeing may need to build aircraft ahead of delivery schedule.

Are they supposed to be getting two new-builds, as I don't see any reference to Nippon Cargo in any of the existing L/Ns?

Thanks for your further excellent updates, Peter.

Looks like 2017 will be a clear out year with maybe 12 plus deliveries. This will please Boeing as having a load of 747s hanging around is bad news. The last 3 passenger 747s going into airline service would be a major industry milestone.

Order rumoured to be due for cancellation. Certainly nothing in the firing order.

Boeing finally sold a white tail! Is that the only white tail UPS is taking?

Assuming Atlas take MSN 1535 then there are no more White Tail Freighters for Boeing to sell.

So it looks like only 4 true NTUs in Boeing's hands LN 1435 (ex LH#1), LN 1495 (ex UAE Presidential BBJ), LN 1519 (ex Transaero #1), LN 1523 (ex Transaero #2),

Boeing does not own LN 1446 (ex Royal Saudi BBJ), or LN 1466 (Royal Flight Oman BBJ). LN 1535 expected to go to Atlas Air as mentioned above.

The 748 cupboard is getting bare . .

Order rumoured to be due for cancellation. Certainly nothing in the firing order.

Geoff

Was there a story or other information associated with that rumor? They cancelled 4 of their remaining 6 on order in the latter half of 2015, I don't understand why they wouldn't just cancel all 6 at that time if they wanted to. Waiting to see how the market played out? Something contractual?

Assuming Atlas take MSN 1535 then there are no more White Tail Freighters for Boeing to sell.

Geoff

If Atlas does take up 1535, will this will show up as a new order of some kind since they don't have any on order at the moment?

So there are four motley passenger frames. The trouble for Boeing is that none of the three airline operators are remotely the sort of operators that like oddballs or junkyard dogs, even at a steep discount. Can they possibly find an airline who wants to operate -- and can get financing for -- four 747s of varying configuration? Or, even more shockingly, that would want to pair them with a few new builds?

With two already-sold BBJs sitting on the secondary market indefinitely, it seems pretty clear they can't be sold as BBJs.

The two Nippon Cargo frames in backlog have no production slots assigned, perhaps that's where the rumor comes from.

Good for the parking lot, but not quite so good for the balance sheet. Boeing Capital seems to be playing an increasing funding / leasing role, disproportionate to the ratio of other models.

I'm sure Boeing Capital will provide the funding, it's just who wants them. A freight conversion, but will impact on new build freighter sales, or sold for parts?

The freighters are all but gone. If LN 1535 goes to Atlas, there are no more white tail freighters.

A freighter conversion is an interesting possibility for the passenger white tails, since that's how many passenger 747s end their lives. But conversion before delivery would be a new twist.

And from what we've read here LN 1495 was built as a BBJ and which means it will need substantial reconfiguration to become a commercial pax airframe.

Here's a link to pix of its first flight: viewtopic.php?t=568453#p8371127

It's definitely a huge financial burden to have four frames sitting around that have next to no market potential.

Perhaps the USAF will take the 2 Transaero frames and 1 of the BBJs.

The lot is almost all cleaned out! What Boeing does with the 4 747-8Is should be fun to watch. The -8F looks good for now with the Airbridge and UPS order.

Sorry but "good" is not how you can describe the 747-8 orderbook no matter how you slice it. With any kind of production rate resembling normal Boeing would run out of planes to build in a year.

Won't it be ironic if the US president ends up flying in airframes cast off by a Russian airline?

Are the E-4B's going to be replaced? They were based on the passenger version of the 747-200 not the freighter.

I'm guessing not. Their role is now covered by the E-6 TACAMO and the VC-25 replacement will almost certainly have better C3 capability than the VC-25.

This is a normal production rate for a 4 engined VLA who relies on freighter orders at this time. That's the reality of the situation. The AirBridge and UPS orders add some certainty to the program that wasn't there two years ago. Boeing has made plenty of $$$ off of this design and it is near the end. Far more of a success story and return on overall investment than the A380. That program may die after a much shorter lifespan and ability to make money for it's manufacturer.

Sorry if this has been covered in an earlier post (I know how you can get flamed on a-net for asking a question about a previously covered topic), but why are the rudders painted before installation on a new airliner??
