Official A330 Production/Flight Testing

Thu Dec 18, 2014 9:29 pm

Hello all,
I started a 777 production thread this morning, and I thought that maybe the A330 could use a thread too. There are new A330's rolling out of the factory everymonth, and I thought that maybe some of our members who monitor the A350/A380 could help to keep track of the A330's advancments.

Thanks all, and Happy Flying!

This thread, and the 777 thread, make a lot of sense, but I guess it's a sign of how successful they both are that their production is so utterly boring to talk about.

The 787 program always feels like it's about to come flying off the tracks again, and then there's still the teens to obsess about. And the 787-10.
The A380 thread is fun when it's not another Emirates frame.
The 748 thread is exciting because they're making so few, and now they're practically selling them Just In Time (or maybe Just Out Of Time?). Find out who's buying or not buying by what rolls out of the paint hanger!
The A350 thread risks getting boring. The program is going too smoothly. But the A350-1000 should liven things up a bit.

Here's hoping we can stir up some A330 drama in this thread  Smile

Even if the thread may be is a bit less 'spectecular' then the 787 or A350 threads, but knowing whats going on in the A330 deliveries is still good to know. The same for the 777.
So thank you starting both.

There are a few interesting A330s that will enter assembly soon:

> MSN 1627 & 1627: first 242 tonne A330-300s for Delta Airlines.
> MSN 1660: 242 tonne A330-300 for SAS.
> MSN 1676: A330-200 business jet for Alpha Star Avn.
> MSN 1675 & 1683: A330-300 for Lion Air.
> MSN 1691: second A330-300 for Evelop Airlines.

The Avianca A330 that was stored at LDE due to delay in delivery has been transfered back to TLS, so maybe a delivery is imminent?

Avianca MSN 1586 was also transferred to the delivery center, perhaps the carriers will take two A330s this month.

OK, just to bring us all up to date...

As of today, 1,157 A330s have flown.

They comprise:

572 x -300
527 x -200
31 x F
27 x MRTT

660 have RR (57%)
265 have GE (23%)
231 have PW (20%)

As always, I wouldn't stake my life on every last number but if there are errors they cannot be significant.

If my calculations are correct, the backlog is 298 of which 197 are ceo.

But there are 12 x MRTT (ceo with RR) for the Armée de l'Air to be firmed up.

They need around 350 ceo to keep production running at the current rate until the neo takes over.
That means orders for around 160 ceo's.

Wasn't there a lot of confusion whether or not the new Beluga's would be new-builts?

If Airbus has now dedicated MSN numbers I guess that discussion can be put to bed? Or did I miss that in the first place...

Not sure if the airlines are messed up, but I think the big factor is the situation there or how it was...

Last year a 3 month old (I believe) A330 burned to ashes, something neither the airlines, Airbus and/or lessors want (were they leased?)
I think the country needs to be a lot more stable before all parties agree to receive new planes

Not sure. At present they have 40 A330s, making theirs the largest fleet outside of China & Hong Kong, and they have 12 more on order: all -300s with GE engines.

Uniquely, they have all three versions of the A330 and planes with engines from all three OEMs.

I am wondering if Airbus is changing the model nomenclature as higher MTOWs are available; they seem to have been using the -243/343 (for RR)/-303 (for GE) for quite a while, even though -MTOWs have been increased; I thought they would have become -304/344/324s. Doesn't matter at the end of the day; just curious!

Incidentally, about the Libyan A330s, I have heard that EI is not going to take the planned A330-200 (its own former -200, EI-EWR) for this Summer, but is instead trying to source an A330-300; as the Libyan A330-300s are GE powered, it just occurred to me ...

Finally, finally ... who are Evelop?

The last number in Airbus naming is more dependent on the engine variant and not the MTOW or version of the aircraft.
So it appears that any engine changed (if there are so?) to get to the higher MTOWs isn't defined as being a new version of the engine

The above airplane is the first 242 tonne A330 and will go to DL after certification.

On the production list says that MSN 1695 is Air China but "was Iberia", what does it mean?

Meaning that it was initially listed for Iberia, but will now go to Air China.

So do we know that the new DL planes will just have 80E1-4 or 4B engines (as they are A330-302s from other sites) and the engine upgrades are anything except increased thrust??? I still dont get how you can increase MTOW by 9 tons and not need more TO thrust.

Great thread

I only see two SAS 330 that have received line numbers in the spreadsheet. When will the last two get their line numbers?

Cheers
