KLM New Livery

Thu Nov 27, 2014 6:35 pm

The previous thread has been archived, but I just came across this picture on Twitter:

Picture is not mine, just found it online

Apparently the mainline aircraft get the new livery too, I thought only the E190, F70 and 787 would get it first...

The "Royal Dutch Airlines" titles look out of place.

IMHO it looks great! Sometimes the most simple tweaks can make a bit of a difference.

I think it looks better on the 737 than the Fokker. Which isn't saying much because I thought it was hideous on the little fuc..., I mean Fokker. This is a good sign that hopefully the rest of the fleet would look good too.

When was the last time Royal Dutch Airlines title was used this way? glad its emphasised I like the revised livery, BTW KLM and Saudia livery are based on the same format as Continental/United, now KLM is different from the two.

I'm not sure I like it. I mean how are the pilots going to see where they are going?

Well, in the previous thread someone said the 737s would get the new livery as well. Was news to me, but he was right. IIRC, he also said the A330's, 777s and 747s wouldn't get the new livery. But I'm curious whether the whole fleet will get the 'Royal Dutch Airlines' title as prominently. Will be interesting to see.

due to increasing labor costs, these planes will be remotely flown by couch potatoes in Sri Lanka. you will also notice that with all the mandatory IFE entitlements the passenger windows were removed as a weight and maintenance saving..

At least it is not a billboard livery. IMHO it is unfortunate that more carriers are adopting them.

I think they way the blue extends curve shaped to the lower nose would look a bit odd on the 747's! Something about looking like a Airbus Beluga springs to mind!

The aircraft is a flying computer. They will punch in the destination on the FMG and they are set to go, as the aircraft already knows where it is within a couple of feet. All they have to do is push it back from the gate and have a flight attendant advance the throttles and raise the landing gear. The aircraft will do the rest except lower the landing gear at the final destination. Hows that for a story?????????

Due to some previous experiences with them, they're not exactly my favourite airline - but I always thought they had one of the nicer liveries out there. Seeing this I'm glad they gave it a bit of a (needed) refresh while not completely abandoning the concept and going eurowhite (    ).
At the same time, they tweaked it enough to make the difference immediately apparent, contrary to e.g. AF's and QF's last livery refreshes.
So all in all: Well done.

They didn't change the fonts, though?
They only changed the positioning of the "Cityhopper" and "Royal Dutch Airlines" titles, which moved to the top half of the fuselage, next to the main KLM titles.

Hi all,
I like the new swoosh, and the new font, but I dislike the positioning of the subtitles 'Royal Dutch Airlines'. It jars.
I read somewhere recently that the airline was going to accentuate its 'Dutchness' ... Perhaps this is a major first step, highlighting the subtitle as part of the colourscheme.
... And while I am at it, I LOVE the 'crown' logo and overall colours of KLM. A true classic.
Cheers,
Bunumuring.

I thought the same, they should've kept 'Royal Dutch Airlines' in Helvetica like they used to

I do like this new look however, will be good to see it in person

I tried out rough makeover on A330 of this look and its looks no different to F70 and 737, so it should'nt be an issue applying it to the Airbus, 777 and 747 fleets. Would have been nice if one MD11 had got it as well.

I agree; it's a classic of graphic design. However, I prefer the original two-tone blue format of the original, when it was applied to the first Jumbo:

It ranks up there with the famous El Al box logo.

The two tone logo or even in full dark blue might look better on the current livery.

Well this surprises me too as KL themselves said that no other aircraft would get the revised livery. Appartently they will bu they will stretch the wavy dark blue line further down the fuselage unlike what was done on the ERJ190 and F70 which makes the new revised livery look better on the 737 (in this case). It will be nice if they will also paint their 744's in this new livery but these aircraft are almost reaching their phase out from the fleet.

What KL needs to drop all the engine logos, too much happening, they are not from middle east whatever happened to western minimalism? will KLM cargo also get this look?

Thanks 777way !

I think this revised livery will be a winner on the 787´s and the 350´s, but I have my doubts if it will work for the rest of wide bodies ( it it ever happens ). I guess we will have to get used to it, its not a bad refresh after all.

I think the tail need a revamp too. With the modified livery the tail looks somehow outdated...

I think it will be really bad for their image if they dont apply this update to the entire fleet, no reputed airline does two different looks on selected aircraft, just because it dosent suit certain types.

UA are only doing it on 787s almost like celebrating a revolutionary new type in a way with a special kind of look, KL are applying it randomly on different aircraf based on who looks good and who dosent, thats silly, and KLM isnt comparable to UA, its also a big step for the airline breaking away from the stiff flag carrier look, the new look is tad frivolous, something not seen on the traditional big Euro carriers ever, except BA world tails but that was something else.

AFAIK they started to use the NOA font, instead of the "Helvetica style" for the Royal Dutch Airlines and Cityhopper titles on the new livery. Also some aircraft with KLM Asia tiles use this font. And on both "farewell MD-11's the markings were in NOA font too.
They also use it for the seff-print boardingcards.

Agree. It spoils the lines of the aircraft. They should have left it as it was. I've seen the E190 a few times at AMS. When you look at it head-on from ground level it looks like it's frowning due to the way the cheatline wraps around the nose..

How is this possible. The aircraft are painted as all other aircraft that painted. Not passing quality control and painted all white so fast? Are you sure about this?

Maybe they weren't painted, just foiled for testing purposes. If what MauriceB is saying is correct.. that they're all white now. But then again, if they were foiled..and it was removed.. they wouldn't be white. Hmm.
