Great to see the first of the pare is out of ATH, and on its way to a new life of flying.

Hopefully SX-DFD will be able to leave soon as well.

There goes UP-A4002 / SX-DFC.

And, now it is in THR. It will be interesting to see what happens to it from there. Bek Air… or other???

Thanks for the video! It's a happy/sad day. Happy that this aircraft will have a future life, but always sad for the fate of Greece and for what OA once was. I like that the cabin lights were on as it took off. :)

Was really hoping it would be on video so was glad to see it posted. What fate awaits it now is a wait and see game. I read it flew on 3 engines.

The last two beautiful ex-OA A340s forgive my pessimism but I fear they've gone to see their final days operated by a 3rd rate carrier where they will surely either be crashed or most likely parked and left to rot at some airport. I used to love seeing the OA A340s in YYZ. I remember running to see them on approach as they flew over my house. Something about that livery just drew me to it.

Looking at the position of the 2L door, isn't that a A340-200 with even lower resale value than the A340-300s?

Beautiful! Love the classic livery. Took many flights on this bird with good memories. Sad to see that last vestige of the original Olympic Airways fleet take off for good from ATH. Flew on every OA widebody starting with SX-OAA to SX-DFD

From which airline were the pilots? Don´t think any former Olympic pilots have a A330/340 type rating. Or has Bek-Air any pilots yet?

Also after being transfered to THR what is the procedure now. I can´t imagine they can enter commerical service right now. I guess they just made the airplanes ready for one flight with special permission of some sort. After such a long storage time a heavy check should be mandatory?

I think Bek-Air was simply used to sell them from the EU to Iran as it is a lot easier to sell to KZ than to IR. it could have been some Iranian pilots, as Aseman and Mahan already operate 343s.
I am pretty sure that it was nobody related to OA, as they have nothing to do with the plane anymore.

Yes me too to that club of course my most flown OA A/C was the A300-B4's. Lots of great memories of those B747/A300/B737/B727/A340 flights and a few hanger tours at the old Hellinikon also. Personally I am glad the aircraft have finally left and whatever their fate be it was time to move on. They did nothing positive sitting on the tarmac at Venizelos.

Nothing to do with Ex OA pilots they are either retired or working for other companies abroad or in Greece. The flights were flown by foreign pilots.

Its a sad sight- an entire fleet of perfectly okay airplanes, most of them wide bodies, rotting away at Ellinikon- much like the old Olympic village itself. I remember somebody did an entire photo series on them- http://www.urbanghostsmedia.com/2014/11/abandoned-airliners-ellinikon-international-airport-athens/

Also, atleast one airplane has found a new home:
http://www.pappaspost.com/oregon-man-makes-retired-olympic-airlines-jet-history-new-home/
http://inhabitat.com/oregon-man-lives-inside-727-airplane-home-in-the-middle-of-the-woods/bruce-campbell-727-house-2/

Bruce Campbell, a retired engineer from Oregon, paid $220,000 to ferry the jet to Oregon and truck it to his home.Oh, and the plane apparently had a 'special' history.
Down the aisles of SX-CBC once walked Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis herself when her then husband— Aristotle Onassis was transported to his final resting place in March of 1975. He compared the registration number of his house/plane to images he found online and it was a match— this was the airplane that transported Onassis’ coffin to Greece, after he died in France.

Regards the still idle aircraft at Hellinikon the latest is this but I will believe it when I see it about an Aviation Museum. Seems too good to be true. :

Hellinikon is the largest real estate project in Southern Europe

The “Hellinikon project” is one of the biggest, if not actually the biggest real estate project in Europe right now. Lamda Development who undertook the realization of the deal is going to hand in the Master Plan with the details for the 5.300 acres or else the largest seaside real estate fillet in the Mediterranean.

'' and a civil aviation museum in the those few buildings and hungers of the old airport that will be preserved.''

http://www.tornosnews.gr/en/tourism-bus ... video.html

Much work has been done to restore the B747 Olympic Eagle and they had open days so keeping it for a possible museum is not unrealistic and would be good to see but as I say I am very cautious.

---

The Olympic Airlines Workers’ Cultural Center, (POL.K.E.O.A) organized an event on December 8, aiming at promoting the historic space of Hellinikon airport, and the necessity of establishing an Aviation Museum and raising awareness on the subject.

“Greece is the only country in the EU that does not have an Aviation Museum, even though it has 83 years of commercial air transport history.

Thirteen years after the Greek airport of Hellinikon closed and 10 years after the Olympic Games, it is time to make the Aviation Museum a reality,” stated the event invitation.

On Monday, December 8, 2014, the Olympic Airlines Worker’s Cultural Center celebrated the 41st anniversary since the first flight of Onassis’ Jumbo 747 (SX-OAB). The event will include a reenactment of this flight.

In 2011, the Olympic Airlines Worker’s Cultural Center presented to the public over 20,000 exhibits that had been gathered over the years, as well as aircraft, which could potentially be displayed in the Aviation Museum.

I remember hearing something about a park being developed there- but there was no follow up. It was probably shelved during the Greek financial crisis.
Although good to see that work on a museum is on fast track. I think its the biggest 'free' collection outside Mojave.

Thank you - great to see it in flight in that livery one last time.

I was actually in ATH last week and wondered what would become of them.

Does anyone know why the Hellenic Imperial Airways 747 is still parked at a gate?

Thats HIA . One left and not known what will happen to it. SX-TIC left back in 2015 with a flight plan for KHI but during the flight diverted to Iran and many said that was the destination all along. There was a court ruling in favor of former HIA staff who were allowed to seize and auction them to claim back lost wages. I am guessing the last A/C was not wanted or is not fit to be ferried anywhere. I would not be surprised to see it eventually cut up by AIA or Govt. but then again after the last two days seeing stored aircraft fly anything is possible. The OA A340s were maintained to a decent level while they were on the ground for 7-8 years and received regular start ups and testing contrary to popular belief but these HIA birds were in a poor state even when they were flying passengers around.

Where is it eventually headed? Is it going to be scrapped?

Syria is getting 3 A340-300s from Iran. The first one is already delivered and registered UP-A4001. These former Olympic birds are coincidentally registered UP-A4002 and UP-A4003. Looks like they will probably end up in Damascus before too long.

Haha, very clever if that was a way to circumvent embargos on Iran.

Greece could become a small transit country, or more specifically ATH. If any airline is willing to invest in that we could see a TK competitor on the way.

Good to see those planes going on to be used. I would fly them from YYZ-YUL(or YMX)-ATH once or twice a year. I even once flew in the cockpit between YYZ-YUL once. Some of the most memorable flights I ever had.
