American Airlines fleet 1999

Wed Nov 11, 1998 9:23 am

Hi folks I'm Ben. How are you doing?
I read yesterday that American has redefined it's aircraft retirement plan for next year. 2 new aircrafts types are coming: the B737-800 and the B777-200IGW.
They originally planned to retire 6 aircrafts in 1999: 1 MD-11, 1 DC-10-10 and 4 B727-200's. But they decided to retire 10 more aircrafts in order to save $40 million in maintenance cost.
The revised retirement plan is now as follows: 1 MD-11, 9 DC-10-10 and 6 B727-200's.
On the other hand, 45 new airplanes will be added to the fleet: 24 B737-800's, 6 B757-200's, 4 B767-300ER's and 11 B777-200IGW.
Right now the fleet is as follows:
45 B767-300ER's
30 B767-200/200ER's
11 MD-11's (they should keep them longer)
18 DC-10-10/30's (I'm sad to see them leave)
35 A300-600's
96 B757's
78 B727-200's (I will miss them too)
260 MD-80's (AA'd better get rid of them!)
75 F100's
Here is what it will be in one year from now:
49 B767-300ER's
30 B767-200/200ER's
102 B757's
24 B737-800's
11 B777-200IGW
35 A300-600's
75 F100's
260 MD-80's (it doesn't look like they are going to be phased out in the near future...)
10 MD-11's left
72 B727-200's left
9 DC-10's left
You can be sure that by the year 2004, the 727', DC-10's and MD-11's will be gone. The fleet will then consist of the following:
A300's, B737/757/767/777's, F100's and MD-80's.

Thanks for the info, check your info on DC-10 retirement, I think it may be wrong. Do you know when the A300s will be gone?

Im gonna guess that the MD-11 they're retiring is due for a D-Check which is done every 5 years. those things are expensive as well as timely. also the Swissair disaster might have gotten the wheels turnin.

I dont think they should get rid of their MD-11s. they must be expecting a shitload of 777s to replace those MD-11s and the DC-10s.
Incidentally, I thought they only had DC-10-30s.

It's sad that American is retiring some of their fleet because it comes at the expense of new Tokyo service from Boston and NY. It looks like they have delayed these new flights indefinitely. I guess the DC-10's they are retiring will be replaced by MD-11's on domestic routes and they cannot use the MD-11's for Tokyo service.

I want to ask you if keeping B727-200 in AA's fleet would not carry higher costs on crew. I know B727 needs 3 people in the cabin. Some others like 737 need only two. If they are incorporating so many 737's, why don't they phase out a similar number of B727's?

Robert,
I don't know exactly the answer to your question but I can tell you that they have more 737's on firm order than they have 727's left today. They forecast that in 2004, all 100 B737-800's will be delivered and there'll be no more 727's. I guess they planned the 727 retirement in relation to the delivery schedule of the new 737's.

The new routes from bos, and jfk have been delayed to the weak asian economy. The 777s, or remaining MD11s would be sutiable for the task...
