MCAS on 737 - 10 MAX

Mon Jun 10, 2019 7:14 am

I've read several times that the -10 MAX will not have MCAS.

What's the reason for that / why the rest of the MAXes needed it?

Interesting. I’ve not read that, I’d imagine it’s due to the longer body of the -10. It may be that the CoG has been moved rearward and the handling characteristics don’t require it.

Virgin converted more -8’s to the MAX 10 only last month and they stated at the analyst briefing that it did not have MCAS.

MAX10 will be marketed differently no doubt in the general public’s eyes. The message of this machine not containing new software will be spread close and far.

It is due to the 737MAX10 having an extension on the landing gear therefore the engine does not need to be moved forward like other 737MAX models for ground clearance

Interesting - could / will Boeing modify the other MAX models like this ?

Are we sure?

My understanding is the extra length of the gear only applies at the point of rotation and is all about the length of the plane not the position of the engines. AFAIK, the engines on the 737-10 have exactly the same ground clearance as all other MAX versions.

Wrong. The landing gear only comes into play for rotation. Boeing won't be making all new engine mounts just go the ten.

The engine clearance isn’t any different to the other MAX aircraft.

The extra 10 inches is the rotation and flare purposes to avoid tailstrike.

COG is obviously further rear than the -8. The tendency for higher nose attitude on landing isn’t there. MCAS isn’t needed.

Carriers will be marketing this machine as another beast to the 8.

On the opposite end, does this mean the MAX7 needs a more aggressive MCAS programming as it’s CoG is likely even farther forward than the MAX8? Really haven’t heard much about the MAX7 in regards to the MCAS issue. Does that MAX9 have MCAS as it’s CoG is further aft than the MAX8? I read before it didn’t but not sure.

Look very closely at 737-10.
You will notice that it has significantly longer fuselage stretch forward of the wing vs. aft, especially when comparing to -9. Hence, center of gravity will move aft and the airframe will not require as much down trim force as -7, -8 or -9.

Which only confirms my theory about MAX design being rushed to the market. Boeing simply wanted to slap new engines on the NG airframes and did not pay enough attention to possible aerodynamical consequences of such actions.

I hope they got this new wizz bang idea of the MAX10 gear right.

The whole idea was they didn’t want to create a whole new landing gear

This has nothing to do with the center of gravity.

The CG must remain within a limited range in relation to the wing chord, and that doesn't change much from model to model.

What changes on the -10 is the length of fuselage ahead and behind of the CG. That means that the stabilizers and elevators (and rudder) have greater authority than they would on a shorter fuselage.

If the Max 10 foregoes MCAS, that might be why.

Plenty. If you search.

Thanks for the other respondents. Isn't the first 10MAX in assembly?

Could that model fly/be tested without the restrictions the other Maxes face?

Depends on how -10 gets certified. If it is a derivative of other maxes, then no. If it is a derivative of NG, then expect 2 year certification campaign and eis independent of junior max

If the MAX9 didn't have MCAS it wouldn't be grounded.

You make it sound like MCAS is not required on the MAX9 or?
If so, why did Boeing install it?

How did you get that from my post? The question was if the MAX9 had MCAS. I answered that if it didn't then it wouldn't be grounded .

The 737-10 will have MCAS. All 737 Max models have MCAS.

Question answered. End of story.

Happy for your correcting me BoeingGuy.

Appreciate it. I was wrongly under the view mcas wouldn't feature.

Nice one :)
