LGW replaces 17 Q400 with 17 E-190

Thu May 09, 2019 8:53 pm

German airline Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (LGW), owned by Zeitfracht and operating a fleet of 17 Q400s for Eurowings, is planning to replace these with E-190s. First Embraers will be part of the fleet by end of the year; the entire replacement process is scheduled to be completed until Autumn 2021. The source for the E-Jets is not known, new or used.

WDL, who is also owned by Zeitfracht, announced their intention to replace their BAe 146-200 fleet with E-190s earlier this year. Zeitfracht denies any speculation regarding a possible merger of the two, though. For the time being, LGW will keep operating for Eurowings (or the LH group) while WDL will offer long- or shortterm wetleases to whoever needs one.

No english link, sorry: http://www.airliners.de/zeitfracht-vore ... -wdl/50014

LGW was originally a separate airline, then became the regional feed for Airberlin. It was bought by Airberlin just before they filed bankruptcy, then bought by LH/Eurowings as part of Airberlin, and was now sold to Zeitfracht in April.
This will likely mark the end of propeller operations at LH, considering that OS are retiring theirs as well. The smallest jets remaining in the fleet will be 35 CRJ-900s, whose future and replacement has not been determined yet.

Except that BE (a) only operates the E-175 & E-195, while the article explictly states E-190 and (b) only has fleets of 11 and 7 E-175 and E-195, respectively, which doesn't quite add up. (I don't think LGW wants a mixed fleet)
They may take the Q400s, but the E-190s will come from somewhere else.

Fair enough... to be honest, never really looked at the numbers, was just the 1st thought that came into my head.... on the other hand, would make a very flexible fleet...?

Flybe only operate the E-175 and E-195, they do not have any E-190’s.

LGW did have E190s briefly (for 6 months or so) back in 2013.
LH Cityline has 9 E190s, so some of them might be transfers from LH.

Citylines are supposed to go to EN and CLH will get A319s instead. But given the advent of the E2 there will be a lot of cheap used E190s on the market soon (That's why WDL is getting them as well).

IIRC those were to be transferred to Air Dolomiti

Heaps of 190s coming available in the next little while - Air Canada, Jetblue, American Airlines are all working their way out of theirs.

I am confused..These Ejets replacing Q400s are gonna keep flying for EW or not?Would EW use them also on routes where A319 is too big, since they have greater range than Q400s?And will they be configured to the max, 114pax?

In it's LCC form, Eurowings has had quite a diverse fleet in recent years:

A319iae
A319cfm
A320
A320SL
A330-200 opb SunExpress Deutschland
A330-300 opb Brussels Airline
A340-300 opb Brussels Airline
737-800 opb TUI
767-300 opb PrivatAir
Q400 opb LGW

And soon:
E190 opb LGW

PrivatAir went bankrupt, and this 767-300 is with Omni Air International now.

A320 and A320SL is not really different. Also, 5x A321 is due to join EW soon.

The 76 is long gone as others mentioned and A343s are going back to LH as well.

You also have to look at an overall picture when EW is (IIRC) short on pilot and also the help from LH.

Will these operate for Eurowings or Lufthansa?

LGW claims to technically have a "long term cooperation with Eurowings", not LH group per se. So for the time being, it appears that these will replace the Q400 opf Eurowings on a 1 to 1 basis (more or less).

10 years ago, some of today's Eurowings routes were operated by Contact Air F-100s (opf LH), which got replaced by Eurowings CRJ-900s (opf 4U / Germanwings). These routes were eventually dropped or transferred to EW or 4U A319s but I could easily see the E-190 work well on them.
Given the equal number, I assume that this will initially be a 1 to 1 replacement of the Q400s. But of course there is the opportunity to use them on longer flights, e. g. to the UK or to Spain.

Interesting. Does the E190 is economicly more interesting to operate than the Q400?
Does anyone have the average range of LGW flights?

Other interesting point, only FlyBE seems to be super happy happy in terms of business by opération the Q400. Does someone know why?

Yeah, the E-jets are supposedly more expensive to operate than the Q400s,esp.for short hops, so why the shift to Ejets?

These may have been cheap. As noted above, several airlines are replacing their E-190 fleets. Also, they offer more flexibility which may be more important for a wetlease operator than for those with their own schedules.

I'm not sure if they're super happy. The reliability seems to be poor, and the fact that they are keeping the E-175 suggests that the Q400 is unsuitable for some longer routes. Also, BE's profits have been poor, if not outright losses for some time now. IIRC FlyBE bought the E-195 to serve sun destinations. But this venture failed, since BE is not well suited as a tourist operator, nor is the E-195 really ideal for these cost sensitive customers. So the Q400s fit their business model better than the E-195, but whether the Q400 is good remains unclear.

More seats, more range, bigger seats & cabin dimensions, faster.

FlyBE operates many very short routes, even around 200mi (ABZ-MME, DSA-DUB, ANR-SEN etc. etc.).
Eurowings doesn't (different geography plus fast and reliable German train network).

I'm curious. The Q400 seems working well in Nothern America operators.
Would the Q400 as a single aircraft type in a fleet of a regional operator would work for an operator based in France or Italy for instance?
Or the Q400 fits FlyBE and only them in Europe because of the UK specifities? (Rail not super on time / Road long and expensive)
