I think DL's next priority with the 221s will be replacing the 717s west of the Rockies. As of Summer 2019, there are 11-12 717 frames needed to cover the remaining flying from SEA, LAX, and SLC. Getting the 221s on some of the competitive Western routes like SEA-SFO and LAX-DEN is in line with what DL has been doing with them so far.

After the 717s have been shifted back to mostly MSP/DTW/ATL, I think DL might try to get them out of NYC as well. Certainly LGA-ORD seems like a prime candidate for 221 service given that it will be all-717 this summer, and the 221 will offer similar capacity with a much better product in a very competitive and important market. I could see LGA-CLT and LGA-RDU getting 221s at some point as well.

I'm still wondering if LGA-MCI will be a candidate as well. It's a long, thin mid-continent route that would allow Delta to rotate the aircraft between LGA and SLC. Right now it is a mix of CR9s and E Jets.

I can definitely see them using the 221 on LGA-ORD since they have heavy competition from AA and UA on the route.

I certainly wouldn't rule out LGA-MCI given that MCI is a stronger-than-average station for DL (including flights to the smaller DL "hubs" of SEA, LAX, CVG, and BOS). However, I think there are bigger fish to fry for now.

They have to sell a few thousand of the current ones to even start thinking about that.

Oh yeah, definitely. I was thinking in the next year or two. I know AA cut the route, but WN is on it up to twice daily now with 737s. The A220 has a far superior product to the RJs and even WN's 737s.

Now with 5 and 6 delivered, what is the next scheduling move? Does LGA-DFW go all A220? Plus another DTW turn out of DFW?

Imho everyone has been thinking about the 500 since day one. Its the 800lb gorilla in the room.

Already happened! 15 more were added to the initial of 75 when they converted a bunch to 300s.

I'm probably jumping further ahead than you're asking about, but by June 2019 LGA-DFW, LGA-IAH, and SLC-IAH will be all-A220, 5 out of 6 flights on both SLC-DFW and DTW-DFW will be A220, and then there are A220 flights sprinkled into the mix on SEA-SJC, SLC-SJC, MSP-DFW, MSP-EWR, DTW-EWR, and LGA-BOS.

Curious to see, but with these changes, this looks like it will be freeing up a significant amount of CR9 & E75 flying.
Any indicate of where they are being repurposed in future schedules?

Just realized I also forgot MSP-IAH! There's one daily A220 flight on that route as well.

Regarding the CR9 and E75 flying, I'm guessing at least some is going toward new flights like BOS-CLE and RDU-PIT, and a lot is probably also being used to upgauge existing CR2/CR7 flights. It's hard to say for sure because of the new deliveries of 70-seat CR9 and E75 DL has been getting via SkyWest, which have also been displacing CR7s. All I can say is that as of S19 it looks like the CR7s are completely gone from SEA, LAX, LGA, JFK, and BOS, with the West Coast hubs seeing all E75 and the Northeast hubs seeing a mix of CR9/E70/E75SC/E75.

There's probably also some trickle down from new mainline flights that are starting such as DTW-SMF and ATL-ONT. As those flights begin, there might be a few 738/739s pulled off shorter segments that get backfilled by large RJs. Routes such as DTW-IND, DTW-STL, and MSP-FAR are only seeing one daily mainline flight this summer, which I believe is a slight decrease from times past. A few routes have lost mainline: MSP-ATW, DTW-GRB, and ATL-ROA are a few examples that come to mind. Overall, however, mainline departures look to be up across pretty much all hubs (including 200+ mainline at DTW, 240+ at MSP, and 90+ at LGA).

Airplanes are getting bigger and more size optimized so yes 500 would mean almost an end A320 which may just happen . It seems unlikely in the next 5 years at least.

LGA-DFW does indeed go all A220, and JFK-DFW will join at the end of August.
