FedEx and UPS 757s

Curious about FedEx and UPS' 757 fleets. Are they all RB211-powered? It appears there are 194 active 757s between the two companies and I'm not sure whether they were engine agnostic when the respective fleets were being ramped up.

No, FedEx's fleet has some PW-powered former United airplanes and UPS got both engine types for some reason.

Thank you for the quick response - do you happen to know exactly how many RR-powered 757s UPS and FedEx have?

Can a pilot who flies a mixed fleet tell the difference between engine types by aircraft performance?

UPS has 35 with PW2000 and 40 with RR RB211. All 75 of them are factory built freighters.

It absolutely is but I'm not aware I can sort by engine type which is the information I'm looking for.

N401UP - N435UP are PW2040
N436UP - N475UP are RB211
As for flying characteristics, both engines provide more than enough thrust, especially as we tend to operate the airplane far below its maximum takeoff weight. The RB211s have a thrust reduction mode after takeoff, I believe for noise. The PW2040s have a more effective thrust reverser due to the larger fan section. There are some systems differences as well, but performance-wise very similar.
Both are great engines.

The only difference I remember is different numbers to look at during engine start other then that can’t really tell the difference in flight characteristics.

Yes it was. All UPS 757 were built new, as freighters.

Factory built freighters? The 757 was never built in the factory as a freighter. They've all been converted from passenger use.

They have more Pratt 757s than just the -222

UPS and Boeing developed the -200PF freighter version starting with MSN 23723 (LN 139) which was delivered to UPS in 1987. Boeing assigned 757-24APF to this delivered configuration.

The RR engines started a lot faster than the Pratt’s......that’s about the only difference I ever noticed.

The FedEx fleet is all conversions from passenger versions. They all have the standard L-1 door

The Precision conversion takes a pax aircraft and installs the small crew entry door as well.

IIRC, the PW engine weighs a little bit less and burns a little bit less fuel, but is more unreliable. The RR engine weitghs a little bit more and burns a little bit more fuel, but is an order of magnitude more reliable. This is all second hand information from reading and talking to people in the industry.

RR Engines start faster vs the PWs. PW thrust reversers will stop you much faster due to the larger fan. On the EICAS there is an N3 display for the RR airplanes.

Systems wise there are some differences for engine anti ice valve location, fuel feed (RR has some hydro mechanical feed that is electronically refined vs PW which is all electronic magic), engine limiter (again due to hydro mechanical vice electronic), and the RR airplanes have a rich position on the fuel switches while the PW only have run and off.

Cold WX ops on each engine have some slight differences for run up requirements as well.

The FedEx 757s are split roughly equally, there are 119 total in the fleet. It does not lean heavily either way.

I work closely with UPS and have asked about the engine options. Word is Rolls Royce option was a internal political move as they started to grow their Europe Ops.

Since they spent their whole life as freighters they have relatively low cycles/hours on them despite their age

The Precision conversion allows one whole additional pallet position than the BCF. It gives the same 15 full positions as the Boeing factory built freighters rather than 14.5 per Precision's website.

I recall during taxi, I would need to use the breaks with Pratt’s, and power with the rolls. Rolls started quicker, but Pratt’s had more power. Loved flying both of them. One of my favorite machines I’ve flown by far

with the fleet size they have, i'm almost positive they do. they're also apparently hiring new mechanics

Yes as do most airlines but heavy maintenance is outsourced on all fleets at UPS.
