UA879 LHRIAH divert to SNN and EWR 12Jan

Sat Jan 12, 2019 10:25 pm

Don’t know if stop in SNN was maintenance or medical, but stop in EWR is for both crew change and FIS clearance. IAH FIS is refusing to stay late to deal with it. Given the current government paycheck problems I don’t blame them.

Update: hearing issue was medical... Best wishes for the passenger involved.

Looks like it's headed to BOS instead of EWR now...

I believe BOS was the original plan for crew change only until IAH FIS said ‘Hell No’ FlightAware shows EWR now.

Even if it was just crew change why would they divert to BOS? There is a flight attendant base there but not a 777 pilot base, so if you're going to have to deadhead some pilots EWR-BOS, IAD-BOS or ORD-BOS why not just head to one of those ports?

Given the flight’s original route perhaps BOS was better choice to avoid unnecessary additional delay? There was plenty of time to position the new crew there before the plane arrived. As is it finally arrived IAH at 0030 13Jan.

UA879 diverted to SNN because of a medical emergency a doctor as well as Medlink recommended the diversion according to the report. The original plan was to go to BOS because of CC.O However once back in the air the pilots decided to extend to max duty with made them legal to go to EWR which gave UA a whole host of options over BOS. UA not IAH FIS made the decision to have passengers clear customer in EWR because they would need to do a full re-crew and re-cater the flight and there were quite a few passengers onboard who were continuing to West Coast destinations that we could accommodate on flights out of EWR instead of sending them IAH were they most certainly would have been stuck over night. According to the report it was UA that informed IAH FIS of the changes and in fact the flight from EWR to IAH took off with 55 fewer passengers than it arrived with as those passengers were re-accomodiated on flights out of EWR and made it to their final destination last night instead of having to spend the night at the airport in IAH.
This had nothing to do with IAH FIS or the government shut down if those pilots had not agreed to extend their duty day after they initially said they wouldn't the flight would have landed in BOS, passengers kept onboard, re-crewed and catered and sent on to IAH where customers would have cleared customs there but UA would have disservice a lot of passengers in the process.

Do we need a thread for every diversion?

Thank you for the update. Sounds like UA went above and beyond to accommodate pax as best they could given the medical diversion. It's really too bad we got a false post that reflected poorly on IAH FIS. Those people deserve better.

Are you sure about that? I can see a gray area in FAR117 where I could see a flight dispatched near their MOT then operationally chooseing another destination as long as the pilots agreed to extend.

Agrees with the extension happens on the ground. Can only go over the duty period in the air if operational (ie ATC delays, headwind bust) items require it. One needs a new CCO time in order to be able to take off.

It could be that they determined they were still legal to continue to EWR based upon the original duty period, hence the change in destination.

The aircraft was originally dispatched for SNN-BOS, after it was in the air the destination changed from BOS to EWR. According to the report UA originally wanted EWR but the pilots refused to extend it was only after they were airborne that they agreed for reasons not stated in the report and the destination was changed while in the air from BOS to EWR. The report clearly stated the pilots refused EWR only agree after they were airborne if they weren't legal for EWR there is no way UA could have made that change without their approval especially if they were up against CCO. I'm only stating whats in the report and the reason given for the change from BOS to EWR had nothing to do with IAH FIS or government shut down as was stated by someone else.

Sorry Jay I really appreciate your posts but I have to disagree here.

Pilots CANNOT extend once airborne. You have to certify fit for duty prior to departure and the extension is part of that.

There is a peice of the story you are missing.

I hear what you are saying but somehow UA dispatched the aircraft SNN-BOS and changed the destination while in the air to EWR which is what UA wanted to begin with. How this is possible I have have no idea but what we do know is it happened and UA879 went to EWR when it was dispatched for BOS and the report clearly stated pilots refused EWR will dispatch SNN-BOS. I wish I could post the entire report but that I can't do. The original report was filed then there was an amendment to the report which stated pilots now agree good to go to EWR all pax will clear customs in EWR, a full re-crew and fresh catering will take place. Any connecting passengers we can accommodate out of EWR will be accommodated remaining passengers will continue on to IAH. IAH FIS has been advised UA879 will be arriving as a domestic flight.
