US Preclearance at YTZ Billy Bishop Airport

Sat Jan 12, 2019 12:27 am

I was wondering when Preclearance will open at YTZ as they completed all the terminal upgrades recently.

I know that PD and AC are using all their slots at YTZ but once preclearance opens, which new additional routes can we see from PD or AC as i'm sure some additional flights to destinations like YOW and YUL will be cut to make room for more US destinations to utilize the new preclearance facility.

Except for maybe a new seasonal weekend leisure destination like SAV or CHS, I doubt you’ll see any new YTZ transborder routes after preclearance opens. There’s no way PD will reduce frequency on the key Eastern Triangle routes. Anything less than 15x daily is uncompetitive against AC. PD vary from month-to-month between 15x and 18x depending on the peaks and valleys of biz traffic demand within the Triangle.

Keep in mind PD have cut both PIT and seasonal BTV, although the latter will apparently return once preclearance is in place as BTV don’t have a proper FIS.

Would AC consider sacrificing some of their YUL flights for flights to LGA?

If they did, they’d become uncompetitive to PD to YUL. It’s no doubt why they didn’t do an 8-7 YUL/YOW split of the 15 slots they were awarded. AC were expecting to win I’d guess at least 25 slots as Sky Regional was first established with 5 Q400s, which is the number of frames they thought they were going to need for a fullYUL and YOW schedule.

Speaking of which, while jets at YTZ are still off the table, what are the chances of more YTZ slots opening up some day?

I was thinking maybe a route to PHL would be great from YTZ as it's a business city and traffic from YYZ is high to PHL and is on the radar of the Q400. Otherwise I know that they'd move some EWR flights to LGA and then move all IAD flights to DCA once preclearance opens.

Yes, the main effect is going to be Porter shopping for some LGA and DCA slots. It won't be all that easy. Partnership with AA might make sense, if AA is interested.

Totally agree, there are many airlines like QR who have partnership w both AA and B6 so PD can be another airline that could join AA too along w the current agreement w B6.

I don't think AA makes all that much money on its LGA-YYZ flights. A code share with PD from LGA to YTZ might be a good move.

Right now PD has several codeshare agreements with the likes of FI and QR that run out of IAD, so they would still probably keep some flights there and send some to DCA.

QR and FI flies out of YUL and BOS so IAD is not needed, they would prob add PHL too which both QR and FI serve. Also there are many B6 flights out of DCA, B6 left IAD and had barely any destinations good for PD pax to connect to.

At one time American Airlines was a major carrier between Toronto and New York and the first informal preclearance arrangements between the United States and Canada began at Malton Airport (now Pearson) way back in 1952 following a request from American Airlines.

It would be significantly easier at DCA than for many carriers, as they could use Type C (usually called "regional jet") slots. If they partnered with AA, it would be even easier, as AA is the most obvious source of Type C slots.
