Delta JetBlue, is there possibility for slot swap at NYC?

Tue Jan 08, 2019 3:26 am

Since Delta and United did similar thing on JFK-EWR slot exchange, could possibly JetBlue and Delta do similar thing on LGA-JFK since Delta would get JFK slots and JetBlue LGA slots. What do you think, airport infrastructure not taking into consideration.

No way. LGA slots are far more valuable than JFK.

Why would DL want to do that?

Make bigger hub at JFK as United did with EWR.

Won't happen. As stated a LGA slot is alot more valuable. JFK I don't even think is restricted all day.

United has the super hub. It's a feature no one can recreate now.

Is Delta constrained by slots at JFK?

If B6 flew to Canada, then maybe because DL has a JV with WS and the YYZ route is much stronger at LGA than the YYC route from JFK. Otherwise DL would prioritize their LGA slots for domestic and Canada flights.

Kind of moot. If B6 were to start NYC-YYZ, it would probably be from their hub, where they could offer connections other than Boston Florida and Nantucket.
Although, personally I’d see a YYZ-BOS before JFK.

Delta want more slots at both JFK and LGA, so I don't think they're interested in swapping one for the other.

Yes. If B6 were to serve YYZ, it wouldn't be to enter the hyper-competitive O&D market. It would be to get passengers on their connecting flights to Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Why would Delta swap slots at LGA for JFK slots with one of their fiercest competitors in NY? Besides, they will almost definitely be forced to divest some of them if they tried this out which means Delta wouldn't even get what they were aiming for anyway. If they leave it alone, they keep what they have and aren't forced to give anything up at all.

So, it's important to take airport infrastructure into consideration because that raises an important question: Why would Delta invest $4 billion in a new LGA terminal and then trade slots to JetBlue? Answer: They wouldn't.

The same applies to B6's shiny new T5 and expansion on the T6 site at JFK.

Maybe, but I have absolutely zero doubt that B6 would walk away from both of those for enough LGA slots. And that number of slots is probably smaller than a lot of folks would believe.

so Jetblue agrees to something that will make its rival at JFK bigger while giving them slots at LGA for which markets?

It was a good move for UA because Delta doesnt have a hub at EWR and UA can have EWR to themselves while AA/DL/B6 fight at JFK. Win/win for UA

DL probably wouldn't be allowed any more slots at LGA and taking them away from an "LCC" would make that even less palatable to regulators. If B6 wanted to give DL JFK slots for DL LGA slots that would have a better chance of approval and would be positive for B6 I suspect, but DL would be nuts to take that deal unless B6 was trading like 4x JFK slots for 1x LGA slot which I think B6 wouldn't do as it would shrink the company.

I doubt it. Travelers from YYZ have a lot of nonstops. Add the U.S. connection and add U.S. customs/inspection fees. B6 would need give away fares to fly Canada-USA-international.

regarding UA at EWR being a win, the faa less then 6 months after the swap with DL Unslotted EWR so basically united gave up something with value at JFK but the value at EWR received in return turned out to be worthless as delta could return if they wanted to. I'm not at all speaking to the strong hub UA has at EWR as a reason DL might want to use resources elsewhere just the slots.

I suspect that's why they don't fly the route.

I don't know if this was a win/win for United. United's president said it was a major mistake to leave JFK -- it cost United big time.

Well that’s true. They regret losing their jfk PS product.

For goodness sake another what if B6 thread.....

Why on earth would B6 give up hub slots at JFK to DL for more slots at LGA which is restricted by a perimeter rule? This what if scenario post is just plain stupid.

I'll take this over another B6/XX merger thread any day of the week.
