"That place runs on Herb Kelleher's bullsh*t."

And Herb ran on Wild Turkey. Draw your own conlusions!

RIP to a true character and a REAL airline guy.

A sad day in aviation. What a guy! Shook his hand many times and cherish the memories. He took a potential failing start up, switched to jets, changed the route and mixed some Jack and peanuts in with it and look what you have today. Headed west no doubt......hope he doesn’t have to stop in SAT, ELP, PHX and LAX to get there....

Cheers Herb.

The best was "Herb's Airline", a 60 Minutes piece on Herb and WN that aired on May 27, 1990. Can't seem to find it on the Internet. They did a follow-up called "Herb and his airline", but the original one was better.

This is truly the saddest day in Southwest history. From a visionary note on a cocktail napkin this man started the best company in the airline business. He will be missed. RIP Herb. Much LUV and condolences to Herb's family and the fine employees of Southwest Airlines.

He built a great airline, and is one of the industry's legends. I've admired Southwest Airlines for a longtime, but it's only been in the last eight or so years they've been flying to EWR that I've had a chance to fly with them. Great company and culture.

Godspeed.

Crandall could only wish for Herb's labor relations and company spirit.

My favorite Crandall quote when the president of Braniff, Howard Putnam, objected to the famously-profane Crandall's telephoned proposal, during a ruinous fair war between the two, for Putnam to raise his fares 20 percent, and "I'll raise mine the next morning." Putnam, who was recording the conversation, was horrified by this brazen suggestion of fare collusion, which violated Federal law, and exclaimed, "Mr. Crandall, we can't talk about pricing!"

"Oh, (expletive), Howard. We can talk about any goddamn thing we want to talk about."

As a decision from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals later described, Putnam did not raise his fares 20 percent. Instead, he sent a copy of the tape to the US Attorney's office.

Herb was a very different kind of leader than most airline executives. I would have very much enjoyed working for him, I expect.

RIP Mr .Kelleher a true aviation innovator and visionary. From a concept on cocktail napkin to an airline that started with 3 planes and 12 flights per day to 700 plus fleet and over 100 domestic and international destinations. Well done. Thank you for so many excellent flights on your airline

Can't imagine what the industry would look like today without Southwest and Herb. New airlines don't come around often, let alone to the size WN is today.

People may or may not have liked the original Southwest...may or may not not like the current Southwest...but it's hard to argue against the success WN has had since its founding by Herb.

I agree, yet ....

If there was any acknowledgement of Herb Kelliher, it is that most on this website know who "Herb" is.

A sad day, a cool guy.

While Crandall's actions as an airline chief were cutthroat, as least on a personal level he and Kelleher enjoyed a cordial relationship. I would think that the comment was made in jest.

Another Kelleher-Crandall banter

Such antics are a regular part of his day. When Kelleher painted one of his 737-300’s to look like Sea World’s killer whale and christened the airplane Shamu One, he got a telephone call from American Airlines’ Crandall, who congratulated him for the marketing gimmick. “Just one question,” asked Crandall. “What are you going to do with all the whale shit?” In a nanosecond Kelleher replied, “I’m going to turn it into chocolate mousse and spoon-feed it to Yankees from Rhode Island.” The following Monday, Crandall, a Yankee from Rhode Island, received a large tub filled with chocolate mousse with a Shamu spoon stuck poetically in the center.

And Crandall gave a nice tribute on Kelleher's retirement

I do recall watching a 60 Minutes story on Herb from decades ago, but I didn't know they did two of them? Very interesting and I will have to start scouring YouTube for them.

I never met the man but heard his name mentioned years ago while boarding a SWA flight in Burbank. The woman in front of me was demanding to be let on a plane that was sold out. The guy at the desk was very polite and patient and finally asked the lady if she wanted him to ask someone to leave to let her on. She got angier and demanded to know his boss's name. He gave her a card and told her to call Herb Kelleher. When the lady left, I asked if that was really his boss's name. He told me who Kelleher was and then told me how much Herb stood behind his employees. He thought that Herb or his office would tell the lady to fly on another airline. So at least that employee really respected and liked his CEO. I have had numerous good SWA flight throughout their history and I am sure a good part of it started at the top.
