Schiphol is getting a 3rd A380 capable gate. Interesting. Currently, only Emirates flies to Schiphol with the A380, twice a day. 0.

Dutch media report that the Amsterdam metro will likely be expanded to the airport.
This will reduce the number of local trains to the airport creating more capacity for international trains (including those to London, Brussels and Paris, in the future perhaps also trains to Germany).

"Schiphol wants to supplement flights to destinations within 800 kilometers - in line with government policy - with fast trains."

I note that Air Belgium is once more offering flights between CRL and HKG, starting on 31 March this year. Seems to be at the same level of pricing as before. https://www.airbelgium.com/en

I read elsewhere on a.net that Air Belgium is flying between LHR and DUB on behalf of British Airways (while B787s are down, I assume). Does anyone have additional information on what Air Belgium is doing with its other aircraft, a daily rotation to DUB only requires one aircraft

I think it's only a matter of time before the morning EK flight that was recently added, goes 380 as well. And with a possible CZ 380 in the summer I guess it's a sensible decision!

I'm sure you meant DXB, not DUB. One is indeed operating a daily LHR-DXB rotation for BA, another operates a daily CDG-LOS rotation for Air France. The remaining two are parked at CRL.

There should only be one Emirates A380 at any one time, is that right? And perhaps the CZ A380. I can't see another airline add another A380 flight to AMS. Singapore airlines seem to intensify their sales campaign recently, highly unlikely, but perhaps they want to feel the waters to add an A380 flight? Or Qatar?

LIJNDEN - Corendon offers flying holidays to Brazil from next winter season. The own airline Corendon Dutch Airlines flies with a Boeing 737 in ten hours to Natal, with a fuel stop in Banjul, Gambian. Brazil is the first long haul destination that Corendon flies to with its own equipment.

https://www.luchtvaartnieuws.nl/nieuws/ ... r-brazilie

Seems like an odd route to me. Is Corendon struggling to get their aircraft placed during the winter month?

That's true. But it woundn't be the first time there are 2 EK 380s on the ground at the same time for whatever reason. Also the modifications didn't cause a downgrade for any other stand or capacity or whatever. I suppose it was also thought that another 380 suitable stand just can't hurt!

Luxair is not resuming LUX-ALC. They flew it last summer.

I am surprised Ryanair does not try either ALC-LUX or VLC-LUX.

There has been talk for years of extending the metro line to Schiphol Airport. The only interesting thing is that the airport itself wants to make a financial contribution. As it’s a major investment and it’s public transport in Amsterdam, I’d just wait and see if this really happens.

Level (part of IAG) has announced that they will open a base in AMS for short-haul routes. They are currently recruiting staff for an Airbus fleet. As Schiphol is almost full to capacity, will they be using Vueling slots?

Why? The route has been flown before and Natal is a good place to spend your Winter holiday.

Transavia won't be reducing AMS-BEG to 3 weekly in summer as was the case the previous years. They will keep their 5 weekly flights though at random hours. I guess it's hard to find slots.

AELS dismantles aircraft in Twente, but I don't know if they have a dismantling hall there. All I can find is that they have a warehouse.

Aels dismantle both at Twente (since resently) and at Woensdrecht.
I have a croatian airlines three seat on my balcony which came from Woensdrecht. You van even see the broken down planes next to the Fokker/Air force hangers

Interesting list of most popular a/c used at Schiphol: Boeing 737-800

Still relative small aircraft, so potential up gauging could result in more passengers within the 500.000 movement framework.

And for freighers:

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2019/03/phase-out-amsterdam-to-brussels-flights-dutch-mps-say/ Both Dutch and Belgian (Flemish) left-wing green parties want KLM to stop their up to 5 daily flights to Brussels, mostly used by connecting passengers. Main argument is that the already existing highspeed-rail connection offers a proper and environmental friendly alternative. KLM, however, states the train isn't yet reliable enough as alternative.

SCHIPHOL - Turkish Airlines now uses a Boeing 777-300ER five times a week on the scheduled service between Schiphol and Istanbul Atatürk Airport. The device replaces an Airbus A330-300, which increases the capacity on the route by approximately 600 seats per week.

In Dutch

You really are starting to see the 500.000 movement limits, now Turkish Airlines are starting to put their big bird on the AMS - Istanbul route.

They'll fly 3x weekly on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. In the future they're planning to increase the frequency. One-way tickets are being sold from € 39.

I am sure an airport the size of AMS can easily absorb extra passengers from such an increase... however, yesterday I was at VIE and having TK's A333 on top of regular traffic was no fun. The rather small terminal got extremely overcrowded really fast.

Actually, at peak times the widebody capable gates are full. So some widebodies are at a remote stand and use buses for the passengers.

Some airlines are upgauging their aircraft for the summer season to AMS:
-China Airlines: from A350-900 to 777-300ER
-China Eastern: from A330-200 to A350-900
-Air Canada: from A330-300 to 777-300ER
-Air Baltic: from 737-500 to A220-300

It does get crowded in the morning.

I usually avoid morning flights as I hate getting up early, so my flights usually don't depart before noon. I never find the terminal at AMS to be very busy at all (at least the non-Schengen area, I haven't flown within Schengen for several years). Only the exit-immigration looks busy sometimes as it's wedged in between security and the departure lounge, but I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes. Usually there is only a handful of people in front of me. The departure lounge and especially the piers always seem quite empty to me. The only trouble I ever really have at AMS is getting off of the freeway. This can be backed up quite a bit sometimes.

But as Hooverman mentioned the terminal can be busy. Mostly the non-Schengen security is in the news occasionally with really long lines and people afraid of missing their flights.

Delta is making some changes to its AMS operations:

Los Angeles – Amsterdam eff 01SEP19 1 daily service cancelled
New York JFK – Amsterdam eff 27OCT19 DL46/49 767-300ER replaces -400ER (Overall 2 daily 767-300ER)

Anyone know why these reductions happend? I thought LAX could work given there is feed on the Dutch side.

LAX also has KL flights, maybe the extra demand wasnt there.

What does get really really busy at AMS is the railway plaza, as it is a very busy interchange station plus a large part of airport trafic arrives by train so it gets double busy.

There are plans for new station exits in the new a terminal and a new above ground railway station.

Looks the new A-pier will be delayed by a year, and the South-Terminal won't be ready until 2023:

(sorry, in Dutch)

Below a link to the now closed A-pier thread:

I too find the terminals/hallways/piers/checkpoints/immigration booths/Plaza/station getting extremely busy at times, with the problems getting worse by the ever increasing size of aircraft visiting AMS.

Yes, and in "vertrek 1" the new floor will be opened next year, so that should bring some relieve.

Looks like there needs to be a thread devoted to AMS, and that this needs to be renamed "Rest of Benelux Aviation ex AMS"

How else will BRU, CRL, LUX, etc ever get noticed otherwise?

I am currently in The Philippines, and now I have loads of 1-stop choices from BRU to MNL, most of which didnt exist 10 years ago. Relatively new are Cathay Pacific, and Thai, both with A350 with 3x3x3 for 9 across in Y, Along with the ME3 (EY still there!) and Hianan Airlines. I didnt check recently on Air Belgium, they could get me non-stop to HKG from CRL Tons of flights each day between MNL and HKG, some for Ryanair prices!

I have noticed that on arrival at BRU, especially on long haul flights, it seems to take ever longer for the bags to arrive. Is there any real explanation for this?

ENSCHEDE - An Airbus A340-600 from Qatar Airways is expected to land on Wednesday evening at Twente Airport. It will be the very last flight for the four-engine widebody aircraft, which is dismantled and recycled by AELS at the former airbase.

The aircraft with the registration A7-AGB was delivered new in September 2006 from the Airbus factory to Qatar Airways. For the past thirteen years, the aircraft has served, in particular, on long-haul flights for the airline company in the Gulf of Qatar.

The four-engined A340-600 has become increasingly out of favor in recent years. The aircraft have been replaced by the more efficient twin-engine Boeing 777s, Boeing 787s and Airbus A350s. With a length of 75.30 meters, the A340-600 is the second longest passenger aircraft in the world. Only the Boeing 747-8 is longer.

Earlier, two Boeing 747-400s from KLM, two Airbus A340-300s from Air France and an A340-300 from SWISS landed at Twente Airport to be 'demolished' by AELS. Two Boeing 737s from TUI also found their Waterloo in Twente. The usable parts are resold, the rest of the device is recycled.

The arrival of flight QR3251 from Doha is according to AELS at 7.40 pm (5.40 pm UTC) at Twente Airport

Good for AELS and Twente airport, bad news for A346, another one to the shredder.

I have a few questions about the A-pier which is being built at AMS.

It is said that the new pier will be used by Star Alliance members (although I don't think I have seen any official announcement about this). I've never really understood this, as it means there will have to be a separate non-Schengen area at this side of the airport. Even though there likely isn't much connecting between different alliances, I don't find this the most elegant option. So does anyone have an official statement about the new pier's users?

And if Star Alliance will be the user, will their operation even fit? I happened across this link today: https://www.arcadis.com/nl/nederland/wa ... reizigers/ (Dutch). If I am reading this correctly it states the A pier will eventually be able to be used by 5 narrow bodies and 5 wide bodies simultaneously. The non-Schengen flights could easily be handled from the B, C or D pier if the A pier is full. However, the non-Schengen (wide body) flights can't. This seems problematic to me as currently between 11:00 and 12:00 there are 6 wide body departures. Of course flight times can be adjusted a bit, but this doesn't seem to allow any growth. I really don't see the point in a specific alliance having a dedicated pier if the operation doesn't even fit.

KLM will resume it's nonstop service to SXM from the 27th of October. The intermediate stop in CUR will be stopped. Twice weekly A330 service on Friday and Sunday.

Developments at Groningen-Eelden Airport.

GRONINGEN AIRPORT SEES FUTURE IN MILITARY AND FREIGHT

EELDE - The new Supervisory Board of Groningen Airport Eelde is working on a plan to ensure the continued existence of the struggling airport. An important part of this is taking over military flights from Eindhoven Air Base, reports the Dagblad van het Noorden.

According to the Supervisory Board, this would be beneficial for both airports: at Eindhoven Airport there is room for more commercial flights without increasing the nuisance for local residents, and at Groningen Airport it leads to more employment and better utilization of the available facilities.

The transport aircraft of the Air Force, type C-130 Hercules and KDC-10, are stationed in Eindhoven. It is also home to a Gulfstream IV, which is used by the Air Force for inspection flights, command and control and the transport of VVIPs.

Freight
The Supervisory Board of Groningen Airport also wants more cargo flights to arrive at the northern airport. The commissioners look admiringly at Maastricht Aachen Airport. The number of passenger flights is also very limited there, but due to the large amount of freight transport, the Limburg airport is nevertheless an important pillar of the regional economy.

Attention to cargo and military does not mean that the Supervisory Board is no longer interested in more business and holiday flights, but by betting on several horses, the airport must become less dependent on that. Only 242,000 travelers made use of Groningen Airport last year.

Interesting developments: might indeed be beneficial for Eindhoven Airport and Groningen Airport to move the military to Groningen, freeing up slots for Eindhoven to let the civilian operations grow. Will mean a huge investment from the Dutch Airforce though, so the question if everyone is enthusiastic, how will the move be paid for? And will Eindhoven Airport/Air base be completely civilian and Eelden go to a military destination?
