United has 1 mainline ORD-ROC (679) as of now . EWR is back to Express.

What annoys me is that BUF can have 4 -5 FLL flights on a Saturday, but ROC has none.

Easy answer ...... BUF has Canadian passengers that happen to love to fly to Florida. Rochester does not have that advantage.

ROC loses mainline (again). A319 frequencies from ROC-CLT and ROC-PHL are gone.

ROC-CLT goes back to 4x CRJ900 (not even the Embraers).
ROC-PHL 4x ERJ-145 and 1x EMB175.

Though DCA gains a EMB175 frequency (3 to 4 total).

BOS and ORD remain unchanged.

Very disappointing.

BUF-PHL gains a mainline A319.
BUF-DFW upgaged to a B738.

Wow that is REALLLY impressive for AA for Buffalo. Finally a legacy carrier stepping up!

The DFW - BUF already being upgauged already to 738 is really good sign too.

I also wonder, does preference for a part of Florida enter into it? Midwestern Americans tend to like the west coast of Florida more than South Florida, for instance. Do Southern Ontario / Toronto Canadians love the east coast of Florida like US East Coast cities do? I seem to remember reading here years ago that there is a big Quebecois diaspora around Fort Lauderdale, but that would not explain Toronto.

In any event, it seems to me that Buffalo would easily support much more capacity to FLL than ROC would, simply by the sheer size of the near-Ontario catchment market.

Look at the schedule starting next week. EWR mainline back as well. Spring schedule is showing ORD at 3X mainline ORD EWR 1X mainline all 739 service.

I found this Youtube video of the infamous Blizzard of 77 in Buffalo.
It's a 1/2 hour newscast and has snippets of recovery efforts at BUF and IAG. But to me the most interesting part was at the end of the video around minute marker 30 the first flight out after a 4 day closure was a United 727 to FLL. A blast from the past showing interviews aboard the aircraft. How interiors have changed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK0e4mwK34M.

The interesting thing about this weather event was not one flake came rom the sky. After a cold season and many snowy days prior 4-5 feet of snow accumulated on the entire surface of a frozen Lake Erie and hurricane force winds coming from the southwest blew the massive amount of snow into the city.

it was the only time in BUF's history it was closed for more than 1 day. Much was learned about snow removal and to this day BUF rarely closes.

I dont know the exact reason but yeah...... Canadians love flying to Florida during the winter to escape the cold. F9, b6, WN are all making millions and millions of dollars off it. AA seasonal to MIA, Vegas, and Phoenix are also cities canadians love to fly to.

That is why the NFTA / BNIA should look into other destinations Canadian travelers like to visit in the United States and get direct service to it.

It means it goes from 2 to 3 daily. It gains one daily, in April.

I wonder if these additions are both Easter-related. Easter is late this year, and New York schools spring break should be around this time. ROC usually has just one daily to MCO. Adding ".7"--in enilria-ese about five flights a week--may be a temporary addition for the break.

Check out enilria's weekly thread it summarizes each weeks filings. This will also explain the way he codes it.

I got that alert from Jettip.net, but I looked on flightradar24, and didn't see any evidence of it. Maybe a misfile?

What's a misfile?

ROU1673 MCO-YYZ diverted to BUF. I would surmise that the first US controller to work the airplane typed in ROU1763 by accident, that's how the track started, and Flightaware couldn't quite figure out that it was the same airplane.

That might be a possibility, but there was a week build up before the Frontier announcement. If it was southwest I would be surprised if the build up was this close to the announcement date.

I had been following a thread of a few passengers on that flight complaining via Twitter. Supposedly they were delayed about 6 hours in MCO due to a problem with the anti-ice system. Also saying that the crew informed them there is a high chance they'll be stuck here another night.

It has something to do with mountains. Maybe UA to DEN to compete with F9? Maybe it is WN finally coming to SYR and it’s just a metaphorical play on words describing the amount of time it’s taken to finally land them.

I'd be shocked if WN were coming to Syracuse and there wasn't so much as a squeak until the day prior; I highly doubt it's them. Either it's F9 going daily to DEN (and maybe some other stuff), or UA will finally announce SYR-DEN. If it's the latter, it's all but guaranteed to be an E75. Either way, I welcome any additional service to my hometown. After years (decades?) of stagnation, they've really had a great few years.

Today's new service announcement out of SYR is likely on an airline other than WN since WN's next schedule extension is on March 14th, which is in four weeks from today.

Maybe the announcement is the current airport directors last hurrah before her last day on Friday (tomorrow) . It would be awesome for her reputation to bring one last new route to SYR before she is gone.

ROC has got to be one of the most incompetently managed airports in the country. Over the last 24 months BUF and SYR have experienced new airlines, routes, and YOY passenger increased and ROC has been completely stagnant. The funds for incentives are there, but the leadership has been lacking from the top at ROC to make the push needed these days to receive new service for a decade at best. There’s no one and nothing to blame except those at the top.

I kind of guessed that UA might retaliate F9’s DEN service once they added the service from BTV-DEN (also in retaliation to F9). But what I didn’t know is that it would happen this quickly.

DEN - SYR
8:15am- 1:48pm

SYR - DEN
2:29pm - 4:35pm

Connections in DEN flying eastbound are harder unless your coming from one of the smaller cities in Colorado. But Westbound there are a bunch of possibilities.

I think if they did the DEN outbound an hour later it would have opened up a lot more connection opportunites for eastbound travelers without hurting westbound connections.

In addition to SYR-DEN, UA could also add BUF-DEN, BUF-IAH, and BUF-SFO nonstop service.

I think that UA adding BUF-DEN nonstop service will likely happen since (a) F9 already has nonstop service to BUF from DEN, (b) WN will be resuming BUF-DEN nonstop service in June 2019, (c) BUF is one of the largest markets that UA doesn't currently serve nonstop from DEN, and (d) UA will also be starting nonstop service to BTV, CHS, GSP, PNS, and PWM later this year in order to better compete against F9 on DEN to East Coast nonstop routes.

SFO is one of the top destinations traveled to from BUF that isn't currently served nonstop from BUF, and the lack of BUF-SFO nonstop service is one of the biggest holes at BUF. There is probably enough demand for at least 1 daily nonstop to SFO from BUF on at least a seasonal basis since there was an average of 262 passengers a day traveling between BUF and SFO in Q2 2018.

Will UA ever add BUF-DEN, BUF-IAH, or BUF-SFO nonstop service?

When you look through flightradar data you can often find flights that never happened or it claims happened. Not sure why, but would guess a typo.

Often what happens in small markets is that once one of the Big3 legacies have successfully eliminated the competition on a given direct route, they drop the route forcing their passengers to go through the hub. Hence, competition in small markets is not always a good thing. I don't see this route having enough passengers to support two carriers.

As for Buffalo, their large operation is heavily dependent on Canadian traffic. And that is never a sure thing. Canada would prefer to keep those passengers flying within its own borders. This organization is looking to do just that:

One Canadian policy change, border controls, airport construction, or other subsidies will render BUF to be on par, relatively, with ROC & SYR. Fortunately, with airports, nothing is quick.

Often what happens in small markets is that once one of the Big3 legacies have successfully eliminated the competition on a given direct route, they drop the route forcing their passengers to go through the hub. Hence, competition in small markets is not always a good thing. I don't see this route having enough passengers to support two carriers.

Or, in some cases, they discover/create a market that can be sustainable. UA is offering 76 seats a day to not just a growing market in DEN, that many people (myself included) connected through ORD/IAD to previously, but also connections through DEN that many people also were previously connecting through ORD. Also, from my experience, flights to DEN have been much more expensive than other direct markets such as Chicago, Washington and NYC, so there may be solid enough margins, even if the load factors are not 100%. I'm pretty optimistic about this route though, because they've never flown it before. I'm sure they will fly it for at least a year before extending or cancelling it, but once the majors have tried a route, they are much more likely to try it again, even if it doesn't perform as well as possible in the first attempt. Routes like DEN-HSV, I never would have thought sustainable, but it has lasted, and even increased in frequency.

Good for SYR.

Hope to see similar service in Rochester soon. We don't have Frontier to contend with, either.

Nevertheless, maybe a column to the Democrat and Chronicle about the airport is in order. Haven't written one for a long time.

Legacy carriers never expand routes in Buffalo ....... AA did add DFW though! So some hope!

SFO is definitely an NFTA target for Buffalo, St Louis, Seattle, Salt lake city, to name a few others.

You must have missed the Carbon tax that recently started in Canada .... airline taxes / prices are going to jump up big time. Its supposed to be gradually increase for the next few years.

Up to 50 dollars more per passenger in a couple years ...... and Buffalo's flights within the US are already cheaper.

https://www.wkbw.com/news/local-news/di ... -it-happen

Senator Tim Kennedy is pitching to international airlines to get direct service from Buffalo to Dublin Ireland. Will he succeed or is he just blowing smoke? Also mentioned getting more money for more routes. (incentive money?)

Also, he said 40% of passengers are Canadian fly out of BNIA. So like I have mentioned before ..... they need to look into more routes that appeal to Canadians.

Stole this link from another thread.

BNIA / Buffalo wise - Most routes last year were pretty good. Some struggles like F9 RDU September.

But like B6 BUF - LAX / LAX - BUF seemed really strong going back month by month.

C'mon,we got that seasonal Saturday WN flight to RSW the media was wetting themselves over. . It's embarassing the routes we miss out on.

Given the RSW route this weekend, WN had 8 departures including 2 MCO services on saturday, up from the typical 5 daily departures
