Happy (belated) New Year, everyone!

To get this thread started I thought I'd chronologically post the major events happening for WA state airports in 2019, so we know what's going on. (This might be redundant considering I did the same thing for a 2018 summary, but I thought it would still be nice to have.) This is by no means a complete list, so go ahead and add on events if I've forgotten any.

Q1 2019:
-First phase of North Satellite expansion at SEA opens
-PAE's passenger terminal opens on Feb. 11; AS starts their flights between Feb. and Mar.; UA starts on Mar. 31
-AS starts SEA-ELP on Feb. 19 and SEA-CMH on Mar. 7
-DL switches to the A359 on SEA-NRT starting Mar. 1
-JL resumes SEA-NRT, DY resumes SEA-LGW, and UA starts PSC-LAX on March 31
-At the beginning of the IATA summer season in late March/early April, BA and LH bring back their 744, OZ brings back the A359, and EI, BA, and AF increase frequency

Q2 2019:
-DL resumes SEA-KIX and CX starts SEA-HKG on Apr. 1
-DL brings back mainline for SEA-MKE on May 1, and starts SEA-SJC A220 service on June 8
-BR adds an additional 3 weekly flights to SEA-TPE starting May 25

Q3 2019:
-CX goes daily on SEA-HKG starting July 1
-DL ends SEA-YEG on July 31
-SEA's new longest flight, SEA-SIN on SQ, starts Sep. 3

Q4 2019:
-Concourse C train station reopens, expected for December

A couple of other things to note:

Doesn't Thomas Cook restart SEA-MAN flights with 3X weekly, instead of 2X weekly?
AC restarts SEA-YYC for the peak season, but I don't know when.
I hope EW comes back with SEA-DUS this summer.
I'm a little surprised to see DL going mainline on the SEA-MKE.
It will be interesting to see what else comes across SEA this year.

Oddly, MT is down to 2x/w, starting June 23 when I checked now. Wonder if that'll be confirmed in the OAG tomorrow. AC's SEA-YYC flight resumes on June 1. I'm honestly not sure about EW adding SEA-DUS, since their LF was poor on SEA-CGN, but we'll see.

Of particular interest for me is how PAE will, or won't, affect anything at BLI. The fact that PAE is only an hour and a half away from BLI definitely opens up a reasonable alternative to the local airport for those living in BLI, though I doubt PAE would have any effect on anyone commuting from Vancouver to catch a cheap G4 flight out of BLI.

Still, I suspect there won't be any growth at BLI for a while, aside from G4 making periodic adjustments for seasonal traffic.

OAG updates week of 1/6:

DL HNL-SEA SEP 1.5>1.0[1.0]
DL RDM-SEA MAR 2>3[2] APR 2>3[2] MAY 2>3[2]
DL SEA-YEG MAR 1.0>0.0[1.7] APR 1.0>0[1.7] MAY 1.0>0[1.7] JUN 0.2>0[1.9]

Notes:
-DL's SEA-YEG flight now ends on March 1, rather than at the end of July.

What are the possible effects of the Gov't shutdown on the opening of PAE?

According to TPG, it could cause delays with the environmental assessment, and Alaska is working with the FAA on this.

Not to distract from the PAE issue, but I heard in the Delta Network Thread that their LAX 717 pilot base is closing, so the West Coast 717 routes (including ex-SEA) will be gradually taken over by other a/c and the 717 fleet will be moved back to the East Coast. Sad to potentially lose the relatively unique aircraft here, but it makes sense from an economical and product standpoint. Looking at late June, the 717 will only fly 2 daily SEA-DEN flights (14 less flights than in S18), so this definitely is reflected in the S19 schedule. Looking at next fall though, the 717s have a similar presence as they do right now, so anything could happen, and of course the schedule isn't finalized yet.

Speaking of DL, I noticed an anomaly in their KIX-SEA schedule. That route is currently open for booking until late October, or the end of the IATA summer season, when seasonal routes typically end. All of their other SEA intercontinental routes are open for booking past then, so will this route be seasonal, or is DL just waiting to see how bookings look, or is there another explanation? Doesn't bode well for the new route, although I understand that they'd be a bit conservative with KIX given its recent history.

I wonder if this is related to the CSeries joining the fleet - focusing one type only on the west coast.

Well, the first A220 route out of SEA is to SJC starting in June, 2X daily.

Well, the first A220 route out of SEA is to SJC starting in June, 2X daily.

Is SJC the only currently scheduled A220 route from SEA? I would figure that they would bring them into SEA from another hub, like SLC. Either SLC-SEA-SJC routing or SLC-SJC-SEA routing. So I'm not sure if the A220 stationed for these SJC flights will only be flying that particular route, or if it'll eventually come from other routes as well.

I wanna catch one of these flights sometime, and I'd be more than happy to drive up from Portland to get on one of these flights... :D

While AS and DL both already serve MCO nonstop, WN could add SEA-MCO nonstop service on at least a seasonal basis since there is a lot of demand for SEA-MCO nonstop service. WN also currently operates OAK-EWR nonstop route, which is approximately the same distance as the SEA-MCO nonstop route, and WN will also be operating nonstop routes that are longer than the SEA-MCO nonstop route when it starts nonstop service to Hawaii from SAN this year.

There was an average of 1,038 passengers per day traveling between SEA and MCO in Q2 2018, and this figure is higher than some of the markets that already have nonstop service to the Greater Orlando market (MCO/SFB) on 3 or more airlines. SEA also currently has fewer daily nonstops to MCO than some of the other markets that have less O&D demand to MCO/SFB.

I went to SEA today for a simulation test of the first phase of the North Satellite expansion, and thought I'd share some pictures (POS doesn't have anything against that to my knowledge). It's 5 gates at first, and it isn't completely finished, but it'll hopefully open on the 23rd. There are three new restaurants in the area, Caffe D'arte (an Italian cafe), Bambuza Vietnam Kitchen, and Skillet (an upscale diner). I really liked the facilities, they have a lot more natural light and a higher ceiling, adequate seating, and more power outlets.

Also, while walking through the check-in area, I noticed that F9's desk is now next to AA, sharing CUTE space with SY. I want to say that NK swapped places with F9, moving next to B6, but I'm not entirely sure.

You think the reduction in SEA-PDX frequency might mean additional mainline flights?

DL is dropping Compass from their Connection carriers in the next 12-24 months, and they currently do the majority of the E175 ops out of SEA. Not sure what their operational performance is like, but hopefully the CP E175 fleet will get a cabin refresh too, since they're starting to look a bit long in the tooth, according to people on Flyertalk. I anticipate that they'll be replaced in SEA by a combination of more A319/A220 flights, and most of their E175s being transferred to OO or another regional airline.

Apparently YUL-SEA is being "evaluated" on Air Canada: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1413095

It is being considered as one of their first A220-300 routes.

Intriguing. There'd be some possible connections to Europe and eastern Canada, and that plus O&D should be enough to fill at least a summer seasonal A223. They already are 2x/day to YYZ in the summer, have high fares, and do fairly well LF-wise, so those are good signs. I don't think it'd be year-round at first, since they've ran SEA-YYC (likely a similar-sized market) for a few years and it isn't year round, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

That should be interesting. At such a low frequency, as most Allegiant flights are, this should probably do quite well.

PSC-LAX on UA will start 3/31. Booked on the inaugural. Interestingly enough, the inaugural is showing CRJ2 but every day after that it looks like E175.

OAG updates week of 1/20:

AA MIA-SEA JUN 1.0>1.8[1.8] JUL 1.0>2[2] AUG 1.0>2[1.6]
AS OGG-SEA JUN 1.5>2[1.4] JUL 1.4>2[1.4] AUG 1.5>2[1.5]
G4 ANC-BLI JUN 0>0.3[0] JUL 0>0.3[0]
UA IAD-SEA JUN 3>4[3] JUL 3>4[3] AUG 3>4[3]

Notes:
-UA added an extra SEA-IAD frequency, so they'll now have 8 am, noon, 9 pm, and 11 pm departures. Makes sense, with them growing their IAD hub and AS upping frequencies to WAS.
-DL did their big SEA route announcements around this time last year (for IAD, MCI, IND), and the year before (for BNA, AUS, RDM, LIH, etc.), but nothing yet (not that there couldn't be something coming up) for this year. After doing some digging, I found that DL's S19 departures will be completely flat compared to S18, although seats and mainline % will be up. Given the IAF construction blocking off some gates on A, has DL finally reached their expansion limit at SEA until more gates open up?

I wonder if AS will go after them on the BLI-ANC flights.

It appears the new portion of the N-Concourse will be opening fairly soon. I wonder if AS will announce either additional frequencies or additional cities soon. The new part of the N-Concourse is lookin' good.

Lastly, I noticed AS has taken over D7, which was used by AA, NK and SY in the past.

I am surprised that DL didn't announce the return of SEA-DFW nonstop service or any new nonstop routes out of SEA such as SEA-IAH, SEA-PHL, SEA-STL, or SEA-TPA since DL had announced new nonstop routes out of SEA in January 2017 and January 2018.

I doubt it. Two flights a week for a third of the year isn’t much to get wound up over.

But, if AS announces BLI-ANC (or even PAE-ANC, which I think would be much more likely) then I think we will have our answer.

I think DL is tapped out on gate space at SEA. Plus they may want some of those newer markets to continue maturing.

Yeah, I don't think there's too much left that DL can add at SEA, at least in the domestic front. OMA, TPA, STL and EWR all come to mind as possibilities.

People keep mentioning that DFW is the largest hole in DL's domestic network at SEA, but DFW/DAL just happens to be one of the most saturated routes at SEA! Isn't there like upwards of like 20 daily flights on that route in the summer months? Insane. There's just no room for Delta here. I'm honestly shocked that AA can fill so many A321s in a single day from SEA, alongside AS, WN and NK.

On a different note, I've always been curious as to how Hawaiian's SEA-OGG route is doing. It's one of the few OGG routes that still remains on the A330, alongside SFO and LAX (SAN-OGG is going to the A321 fairly soon, if I recall). With competition from both Alaska and Delta, I wonder how they can fill so many passengers in a widebody jet on that route. SEA-HNL I can understand, since HNL provides some onward connections (although fairly limited), but OGG is just O&D traffic.

D7 is still a common use gate. AS has taken over B9 and B11.

Allegiant announced today that they're dropping BLI-DEN. Port of Bellingham says they're trying to find a carrier to fly that route.

Yes...I noticed AS over on the B-concourse on Saturday morning.

I could see UA starting BLI-DEN/SFO. Maybe even BLI-LAX if those are successful.

Personally I think this has F9 written all over it. They've added BTV and BUF recently as secondary Canadian airports, and apparently they're not doing so well in YYC so I doubt they're in any rush to add YVR. They could do DEN, and maybe try LAS to give G4 some competition on their 3x/day flights. I'm not totally ruling out UA given their beefing up of smaller cities, but BLI might cannibalize their YVR flights, where they already serve SFO, LAX, and DEN.

F9 did BLI-DEN seasonally in the past and dropped it. However, I believe they are resuming a few other routes that were previously dropped.

Alaska's start of service at PAE has been delayed until March 4 due to the government shutdown, with free rebooking out of SEA or to a later date at PAE offered for all customers.

Thank you for the update. I just posted the link in the AS 2019 network thread and the initial AS PAE announcement thread.

I saw on Sea-Tac Airport's FB page about the new portion of the N-concourse. Is the new portion opening for business tomorrow?

Yes, the first expanded part of the North Satellite opens today (1/23), according to FlyerTalk.

When should we expect SEA's 2018 pax numbers to be released? I typically remember them being released in either the first or second week of the year, although I could be mistaken, and I can't find them on Port of Seattle's website. Is the government shutdown having an effect on this?

Have they taken over B9 and B11 or using them as common use gates? I know DL and B6 use these gates and seeing how short DL is on gates, I can't see them completely giving them up.

B9 & B11 are now AS exclusive, not common use

I saw the rest of the new part of the N concourse will open in June. Then they close the old part for renovation, which will take around 2 years.

I'm surprised that WS added PDX before SEA, but DL already has three SEA-YYC flights scheduled for the summer which are all codeshared to WS, so I guess that covers it...

AA will start using their 737 MAX 8 on 1 of 2 of their SEA-MIA flights for S19, according to Routesonline.

https://www.routesonline.com/news/38/ai ... june-2019/

Also, on a related note, UA will be using the MAX 9 on one of their SEA-SFO flights beginning June 6.

I think I've seen UA use the 737 MAX on SEA-DEN as well. Only once in awhile, though.
