The world tails in branding terms were meaningless. Saw a BA 77W on the next gate as I arrived BKK-HKG yesterday, made me smile, my country’s flag, a piece of home. The Masanabo African art never had that effect. Ayling’s 1997 relaunch was a globalist one, he saw the world, as do many people in power, in a way that most of us mere plebs do not. I quite like my borders and there’s a reason there’s a lock on my house door.
Some of them were decent but when they came to fly for state reasons it was a nightmare. They had to paint the Union Flag on a 767 for a state visit for the Queen (Chelsea Rose and Benyhone didn’t say UK for obvious reasons) and actually, as soon as they were forced to put it on one, it was clear it was waaaay more apt than pottery from the Netherlands.

Don't know about that. But if you google images of BA livery you come across this one:

That's going way too far with standarisation :D

Btw have IAG switched a single in-service aircraft between BA/IB/EI?

Also don't know for sure, but I recall this one. When BA was short of planes last summer (QR A320s wetlease), Iberia took over some MAD-LHR flights from BA. BA-IAG could have decided to transfer a IB-IAG A320 from MAD to LHR, but decided to cease the in-house operation of several LHR-MAD-LHR flights and "codeshare" on a new IB operation.

I guess It can be done, but since you need more than just the aircraft, also the crew to operate it, "borrowing" planes from sisters will only happen at very specific situations.

I just read this as I was drinking a can of Pepsi... I had to look twice at the picture. I thought I was tripping out with the similarities of the can and that pic...

I actually love the British Airways World Tails on reflection, each and every one of them were beautiful designs in their own right even if they didn't quite work with the rest of the livery. Some of them did actually work; Celtic, Chelsea Rose, Tartan and Koguty Lowickie were personal favourites.

Wasn't much of a surprise to hear Thatcher describe the designs as "awful things" considering she wore the same blue suit for 11 years. The likes of Johnson, Rees-Mogg and Farage would probably call them "foreign muck" if they ever reappeared.

I agree that they were beautiful as pieces of art. But they did nothing to advance, promote or build a brand presence. The average non-a.netter wouldn't have a clue who or what taxied by if it was unique and different like the Worlds Tails concept.

Unless you build your brand identity like Oregon Foot all where they wear crazy different neon outfits every day, consistency is key.

I suspect one will be seeing a billboard-style livery on Aer Lingus and the vertical stabilizer will retain the shamrock.

Hopefully, the new livery will be something like this:

Image
Image

Not a slightly boring "all-white livery" that many airlines have done (e.g. China Eastern)
ATL, AYT, FRA, FUE, HEL, JFK, LCA, LHR, MUC | AY, BA, DL, FH, LH, LO | A320, A321, A333, 752, 764, 772, 788
The word "Quawer" means nothing but it looks great.

I agree. I love travelling but there is always a sense of comfort when I see a US airline (particularly UA) abroad. I love travelling but home is home no matter where you are. Sidebar: the oddest but still comfortable feeling I had when flying was flying on a UA 738 while not in the USA on NRT-ICN.

EI needs to stick to the green and shamrock. It's too iconic to give up.

I hope its something similar to the klm change rather than going to a mosty white fuselage. Dropping the blue from around the windows and making the green border line a bit swoopy. The tail and logo should stay put, perhaps a more modern font too.

A brand refresh is not the same as a rebrand though. Air France and Lufthansa have had a brand refresh with the basics remarkably similar.

I'd love to see them go the route of Air Tahiti Nui or Hawaiian by keeping the same general design, but by modernizing the font, tweaking some of the elements, but also adding something subtle to enhance the quality design that is already there. They could do something really cool by adding some subtle Celtic knot design on the fuselage.

Could this "branding refresh" be connected with a possible EI entry to Oneworld? Is Oneworld entry planned and hoped for 2019, but still waiting on USDOJ approval?
Maybe a premium economy cabin (which seems to be quite popular with passengers and profitable with airlines as evident by AA changing their 788 cabin layout by eliminating some business class seats to accomodate PE)?

I don’t think it’s anything to do with One World to be honest, that’s still on the table but not an urgent requirement.

As for Premium Economy, it’s not in any immediate plans but it was under serious consideration when the A350 introduction was in the works. The A350 is very much on the back burner for now but who knows, maybe when it’s reconsidered they’ll use the additional floor space for a premium economy product.

USDOJ is not required for airline alliance approvals, as far as I am aware. For Joint Ventures, yes, but alliances, I don't think so.

Either way, Aer Lingus still haven't re-joined oneworld and I'd say now the most likely solution for them is being oneworld connect, like Fiji Airways has done. This is essentially priority boarding and priority check-in on all airlines, with the full alliance benefits only on the airlines sponsoring the connect member. My guess is it will be British Airways, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Iberia and American Airlines.

Premium Economy, I don't know. Aer Lingus are making stacks of money with the cabins as they are. I can't see them reducing business class at all, and by the same token they'd need to be able to fill Premium Economy at prices to replace the lost seats. Possible, yes, but nothing has been announced as yet and it probably goes against their value carrier strategy.
I do enjoy a spot of flying, especially when it's not in economy!

Ugghh I hope not, but I don't have much faith in airlines redesigning their liveries at the moment so you're probably right.
I understand that this was a wet lease hence the unfinished fuselage, but why paint the engines green when they are white on the actual livery?

It was temporary summer lease, just three months for the lower yielding Shannon operation so a 757 could be moved to Dublin to start new routes.

The first year of this deal saw Aer Lingus titles sloppily applied to the Omni 767 and a green shamrock slapped on the red coloured engines, it looked horrendous and the service levels on Omni were slated by Aer Lingus passengers.

The second year resulted in this interim livery, to reassure passengers of Aer Lingus’ involvement in the operation. The green on the engines was an easier cover up than white, the original red was still underneath. It was only for around 12 weeks and lasted for two summer seasons as Aer Lingus were able to source and take delivery of new A330s which meant the 757 could return to Shannon on a full time basis.

One can hope and dream that this becomes the new livery. I aint a fan off the current one and always love the green spirit livery and thought, you take the rugby players off the side and tweak it a bit it would make an amazing livery. Would really set Aer Lingus apart from the rest of the boring airlines.

skipness1E..... wasn't one of the other problems with the 'world tails' a level of apron confusion with ATC messages to departures queuing @ LHR?

If a message was given to follow a 'AA' or 'JAL' flight for example, you couldn't miss those aircraft tails, but if you had to follow a BA departure, crews were confused about what tail livery they were looking for. Don't know if it was true, but I heard it from a BD pilot one time.......

I indeed used the IRFU livery, just kept the curves and colours. EI knows it works, so they should just implement it as a refresh.

Me too. And i'm not the nostalgic type.. but at the same time, change for the sake of change isn't a good idea. HA, AS and TN have given a good roadmap on how to evolve a livery while still maintaining a unique look.

Hopefully we see more like the above and not an LH type change

I fully expect a eurowhite livery with a green accent somewhere and the shamrock, of course. IAG is known to be a bean counter, and with the fact that white paint costs less and can go longer between repaints (fading), it seems an easy decision for them. I think the days of a full green-top livery are nearing the end.

I'd love to see them produce four choices for airline staff to vote on, just like Sun Country did recently. Let your employees choose and have some buy-in to be proud of.

If they're going to do it seriously and have something that is going to last 20 years, they need to spend something decent on it. That means something that will stand out from the Eurowhite crowd; I'm expecting (naively or otherwise) something more than just a "refresh" like AF or QF. They need something more than a new typeface.

One can hope and dream that this becomes the new livery. I aint a fan off the current one and always love the green spirit livery and thought, you take the rugby players off the side and tweak it a bit it would make an amazing livery. Would really set Aer Lingus apart from the rest of the boring airlines.

You and I have different taste. I've always thought the rugby livery looked hideous, hideous, hideous, so even this modified version makes me want to throw up. It's not pretty at all. But happy you think so :)

I said 'blue and green should ne'er be seen.' THAT'S why it makes you want to throw up. There is a reason for these sayings. Makes me want to throw up too. And I do agree with the 'blarney stone, leprechaun, Finegan's rainbow' etc etc. American 'Oirish' stuff -yugh! And I'm half Irish American myself. Still wants to make me to throw up. :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck:

They did look a bloody mess in fairness apart from the one adopted currently.

Dunno, I always felt that Chelsea Rose on a 772ER was an outstanding livery.

Having a Dutch last name I was pleased to be on G-VIIU BOS-LHR years ago when it was in the Delftblue Daybreak scheme. But I also have dual citizenship with Ireland since my Dad's Mom was from Kilkenny. So I'm interested to see what they come up with here.

I don't like the swooshes, the current livery has a timeless elegance (you don't see SQ with swooshes). Ideally all they would do would be to fix the nose area which seems a bit off with the way the lines end.
Sadly I suspect we will see the omni inspired Eurowhite with green tail. I would prefer the lucky charms one than that :)

BA World tails were cool, but I can see how they were polarizing

Whatever they do. I hope there's little to no Euro-white...

I like that.

I'd just add a little line of orange along the whole fuselage, under where you have aerlingus.com

S

It’s just the same Oirishy theme as today’s livery with a really bad typeface for dyslexics or something

It needs modernising and updating .... Eurowhite is perfect with a stylised shamrock on the tailis the way to go... a green version of Qantas , Iberia etc

Personally I wish they’d get rid of the shamrock but they’d be listening to complainers for months to come
