It's operated by OO, I wonder if this is an at risk flight?

I heard a rumor today that OAK is also in the cards. I don’t remember seeing anything announced.

I’m glad to see UA expand into smaller markets such as SCK.

SCK is an hour and a half from SFO, isn’t it? Is that really worth a flight?

Similar distance to SMF/STS/MRY and UA flies to those airports. Although SCK is smaller and/or poorer than those.

Strictly for cx... much like the flights from SMF.

Hasn't SCK received SCADS funds for a LAX route in the past? Finally coming to fruition?

Glad to see SCK get a 'normal' airline again.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

Glad to see SCK get a 'normal' airline again.

SCK received a $650,000 SCASD grant in 2016 for LAX service. Over the last few years they have spoken with several airlines including UA and AA, even Great Lakes was in consideration as an independent last year.

SCK also had interest at one point from AA for a SCK-PHX route but the DOT said the grant application specified LAX flights and could not be used for something else.

I am happy that UA is returning. Stockton was my hometown airport for many years. When I was a child my father took me to the airport to see the United prop milk run flights from SFO and LAX pass through the airport. Over the years I flew: UAX, USX, Golden Gate, Air Pacific (Calif. operation) PSA and Pacific Express.

That is great they will serve stockton!! I miss the day of United Airlines being number 1 in LAX. United Airlines used to be the airline I flew from LAX to the world! They were much better before the merged with Continental. They became much less premium after the merger!!!

I was there when Frontier started service and also my dad would fly Air Pacific DHT to Sf connecting for business trips. Always fun in winter fig days. Just drove to SFO.

I remember Frontier’s afternoon flight to or from SCK as part of a loop to/from DEN.

Funny how the last time I stopped by the SCK terminal ( summer 2017), it still looked almost exactly the same. Still see where the former counters of UA RW FL PS and the later carriers were. Of course the 'new' baggage carousel took out where Air Pacific and a GA operations counters were. I remember Federal Express had a small counter there as well in 1980.

Yes, flight numbers 5000-5175 are at-risk/prorate. If it does well, it will move to a UA contract flights as most other CA routes have in the past couple years.

If you tab and hit enter after typing in SCK it'll work, you just won't see it appear in the dropdown

For 13 hours? Doesn’t seem like efficient utilization. Is there a maintenance base there?

OO CRJ utilization is low, having one sit in SCK for 13 hours isn't the end of the world.

I’m pretty sure it’s for crew rest. Instead of the crew staying over again in SCK for a whole other day, they get off in the evening and fly back in the same aircraft the next morning.

Ok, I didn’t know if this is typical. Just seems like a long time to have an aircraft on the ground not being used.

Might be the “cost of doing business” for an LAX departure. It is an unusually long ground time even for a crew to quick overnight; so maybe there wasn’t gate space at lax or aircraft availability later in the day. As mentioned, CRJ’s are paid for and there is no shortage of them so a few extra hours isn’t going to hurt.

Born and raised in Stockton and flew in and out via United way back when.....
Can't imagine spending the night there, at least anywhere near the airport.

Does UA at SFO have an evening connecting bank that the aircraft could be used to do an evening turn?

As others have said, utilization is not what it used to be. It's not uncommon for long sits at the regional level. Also allows one crew to overnight instead of two so there is a cost savings there.

Of course not if you are going to SFO, but like all close outstation-hub flights that's not who this would be for. It is certainly worth it to avoid the 1.5 hour drive, plus higher parking costs plus traffic uncertainties, plus longer lines...

Pretty sure that UA never flew DC-8s to SCK. That was part of the 737-200 milk runs.

UA did at times schedule DC-8s to FAT though.

I was going to say, many, but I don't really remember, so let's say, a few airlines used the Stockton airport to practice landings and touch and goes. As a teenager I use to drive out there and park on the frontage road at the end of the runway and watch. Jets of all sizes came and went. IIRC, it is a 10,000 foot runway.

I wonder how many remember that the 1977 movie "Raid on Entebbe" was filmed at SCK. All of the airport scenes in the movie including the battle scenes were filmed at SCK. The terminal had a facade attached which included a sign reading "Welcome to Uganda". Some arriving passengers back then probably did a double take when seeing that sign.

UA operated DC-8’s into SCK during the early 1970’s. I have a postcard of Stockton airport and a United DC-8 is parked on the tarmac.
Come fly the sun.

Bingo. It is a bit of a long RON, but it ensures the crew gets a full eight hours "behind the door", so even with IRROPS the next day's schedule shouldn't be impacted.

While not a major market, there are some reasonable layover hotels in the SCK area.

In the same trip i stayed in a hotel in Merced, then hiked in Yosemite and drove back to OAK with a stop in Stockton for food. Merced is the true shithole of California. The cherry on top was the biker gang that robbed the gas station next door was staying in the same hotel!
When wasn't America great?

I was going to say, many, but I don't really remember, so let's say, a few airlines used the Stockton airport to practice landings and touch and goes. As a teenager I use to drive out there and park on the frontage road at the end of the runway and watch. Jets of all sizes came and went. IIRC, it is a 10,000 foot runway.

Lived in Lodi 1979-80 and remember seeing AA DC-10s and WA DC-10s doing touch-n-gos there at times.
Sent my mother to SEA via SFO on the early UA flight one day and it was a 727, I think -100 IIRC. Naturally got jet blasted due to their RW 29 dep and us standing north of terminal looking towards runway lol.
I believe this was when UA would runan early SFO-SCK-SFO rotation and a very late one was well. Just before they eneded SCK service.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

Actually that's kind of a fitting sign. Stockton should have just stuck with it.

Good to see. I remember taking the UAX (both to SFO and LAX) flights out of Modesto before those went the way of the buffalo. Always enjoyed them. Makes getting back to that part of the Valley easier anyway.

The schedule doesn't seem that crazy to me. It's not too far off from most other UA small markets in the west. The evening LAX-SCK is a little early, though the crew explanation makes a lot of sense. If UA were to later start SFO-SCK or DEN-SCK, the LAX flight would probably move to the 10:30pm bank, but if it's just these two flights to and from LAX, then it doesn't seem too bizarre.

To be fair to Stockton, I've always thought if Sacramento had not been made the State Captial, for whatever reason, Stockton would have remained the major city of the San Joaquin Valley. Unlike Sacramento, which had to dredge the river to create a seaport, Stockton has a natural deep water port and was the major stopping off point during the gold rush. People came from all over the world and after entering the U.S. at San Francisco, the next stop was Stockton, before traveling up into the gold country.

Even if UA mirrors the fares that Southwest (et al) offers from SMF-LAX, I don’t give this service very high odds. The schedule to SoCal (including every other airport) and airline choices out of SMF are just too great/convenient. Perhaps connections will prop this service up, but there are too many choices close by. OAK will also still likely draw away pax from Tracy/Manteca.

Time for a quick RT to SFO?

SCK is an hour and a half from SFO, isn’t it? Is that really worth a flight?

Of course not if you are going to SFO, but like all close outstation-hub flights that's not who this would be for. It is certainly worth it to avoid the 1.5 hour drive, plus higher parking costs plus traffic uncertainties, plus longer lines...

The drive can be well over 2 hours in traffic, and it’s not that much closer than MOD, which UA flew EMBs to a few times per day out of SFO for years. It’s not out of the question, but LAX is a better choice, even with fewer connection options.

The press conference at SCK has been delayed one day. It is now planned for Wed Dec 19. The reason given is "unforeseen circumstances".

Some media coverage links from today's SCK press conference.

Interestingly, in the second link they mention that United California President Janet Lamkin is a Stockton native.

Another interesting fact appearing in media articles today:

In 2017, the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors considered adding “San Francisco” to the name of Stockton’s airport in an effort to draw more attention to the area and drum up more business. Though San Francisco International Airport’s director and a Bay Area congresswoman objected, SFO officials helped bring the service to Stockton.

“That drew the attention of San Francisco airport,” said San Joaquin County District 3 Supervisor Tom Patti, a member of the San Joaquin County Aviation Advisory Committee. “They’re overburdened with some of these small flights and they want to bring less traffic to SFO, and they know this region is underserved.”

When Stockton Airport considered changing its name last year to include “San Francisco,” executives at San Francisco International met with Stockton Airport executives and county officials, according to Patti, who represents parts of Lathrop, Manteca and Stockton.

During the meetings, San Francisco International said they were overburdened by flights, Patti said, and helped facilitate the conversations with United Airways that resulted in the new direct flights from Stockton to Los Angeles.
