Updated: Jeju Air announces order for up to 50 737 MAX airplanes

Fri Nov 02, 2018 10:47 am

South Korean carrier Jeju Air is currently eyeing an order for 50 narrowbody jets, either Boeing 737MAX or Airbus A320neo family aircraft. The potential order could be worth as much as $5.7 billion.

South Korea’s biggest low-cost carrier, Jeju Air, is in talks with Airbus and Boeing to buy 50 narrowbody jets as it expands a network that includes one of the world’s busiest routes, sources close to the matter said.
The potential purchase, worth around $5.7 billion at list prices, offers Europe’s Airbus a chance to trigger the defection of a Boeing customer in a key market but Boeing is seen as the front-runner to win the order and retain the 737 operator’s business, the sources said.

This would look to be Boeing's order to lose given Jeju currently operates 39 737-800s.

Yes indeed! However stranger things have happened for past decade, not holding my breath for this one. Hahaha....

I agree that this is Boeing's order to lose. The only chance that Airbus has, IMO, is if 7C decided to buy some larger planes (i.e. A321) and perhaps decided that A321neo is better than 737MAX9/MAX10.

And it's official.

That doubles the size of the airline. Thanks for sharing

I wonder if Jin Air, Jeju Air or Easterjet will soon follow with a big order since the Korean LCCs are fiercely competitive and almost exclusively flying 737-800s.

Good news for Boeing; quite a dearth of major orders recently. Can't recall the last major one.

I have to wonder if this will be a partial replacement for leased frames, plus expansion. I also don't see how this order stays at just MAX 8, with some of it becoming MAX 9 or MAX 10.

Has T'Way Air announced a massive order yet? I know they're adding 8 B38Ms soon, presumably on lease, while this appears to be a direct order by Jeju Air.

Also, I find it hard to believe that South Korea can support 6 LCCs under 4 different ownership groups. I'd be surprised if one of them didn't eventually go regional long-haul, probably Jeju Air. (What I also have npticed is that except for Korean Air proper, most narrow-bodies operated by Korean carriers are leased.)

Jin Air already went long haul with the 772ERs supplied from KE. Also even KE has quite a few narrowbodies leased - e.g. 8/11 of their 738 fleet. Although admittedly the fleet size is small.

They went to town at Farnborough. That wasn't that long ago.

The only Jin Air routes that require the range of a wide-body are ICN-HNL, a seasonal service, and its seasonal Australia charters to OOL. Everything else can be flown by a 738. If Korean Air retires its A330s from mainline service, along with the 777-200ERs (which are getting up in age), the newest A330-300s could be moved to Jin Air with about 350 seats...far better CASM and less wasted MTOW.

I suspect they will get some -10s also as their presentation about the MAX orders includes the type in range diagram.

It is incredible that a market of 50m people has room for so many planes across several carriers

Wow - this opens up CGK, DEL, DPS, HKT, KTM, KUL, PEN, SIN, and maybe even DRW, DIL and POM at a push (not that those 3 are likely, but still).

Cheers,

C.
