Oh no.

Looks like it’s mostly an overwater flight.

Thunderstorms around Jakarta as well.

Hopefully everyone gets out okay. Hopefully.

Flight path is interesting climbs to about 5400ft and bounces around between 5400ft and 4900ft and then dips down to 4500, climbs up to 5500ft then suddenly dips down and contact is lost.

No good indications here - a seemingly unusual climb profile, and airspeed was on significant uptick when tracking was lost.

7 minutes at 5,000ft and over 300 knots seems unusual.

Assuming it is registry PK-LQP, it was delivered August 2018.

A ship reportedly saw it falling from the sky. Would indicate either a catastrophic failure or something like a stall a la AF447 perhaps.

I am from Indonesia and Lion Air - Air Asia - both are on my BANNED list. I am reconsidering Batik Air as well since they belong to Lion Group. Soo sad 1 month plane and passengers now gone.
The problem with Indonesian pilots are their CRM training very poor. 3000ft is not that high... and the water is not that deep, maybe they can land the plane. I know those area.

and one thing that pissed me off is, they didn't put any update news on their website and never will

There safety record might have been always at risk and since around this year and before are always delays before the lost.

Ouch sad to loose a max8 so soon after introduction. Here’s hoping there’s at least some survivors.

I’ve seen a few comments on it already but I just wanted to ask the question outright since I don’t know a ton about Asian carriers.

I’ve heard of lionair but I don’t know much about them. ULCC? Thoughts on their safety in general? If they are buying new planes that usually is good sign in my mind that they aren’t just buying old ones. Just some background from some of you that have flown them or know them better than me. Thanks.

It’s absolutely insane how bad the safety record is for this airline. Blows my mind anyone would step on one of their aircraft.

The relatives of the passenger are being taken to a waiting room. The authorities in PGK will be conducting a press conference.

A little baffled at some people above who seem to be sadder about a 737Max8 being destroyed than the people who were inside it...

Not to take away the focus from this sad situation; but is this a record from delivery to crash for any airline and/or aircraft made?

Looking at FR24 radar the speed was good throughout but certainly had control issues as was deviating +/- 800ft and last report shows 2,800ft and 383 knots with a down velocity of + 7,000ft per minute. Not good.
Hopefully a miracle. Must open the question to sabotage as well as maintenance should be fine on a 2 month aircraft.

Fingers crossed for everyone on board.

The GOL crash was a three week old frame, and I know there have been others that were younger.

Yeesh, this is really horrific... then again, Lion Air's safety record is hot garbage, so I'm going to call this one out on pilot error as my gut says.

Most probably yes and I remembered they did it before with their brand new 737-800 crashed just short of the runway in Bali (everyone survived)

Lion Air has becoming a joke in my country and they always always always screw up on many things... the problem is...they are cheap to fly so most below avarage ppl take Lion.

I am no rich but I always travel with Garuda no matter what. sometimes by train too. less trouble. damn I am flying in 3 days.... lol

I’m assuming you don’t work for LionAir because I guarantee you they want it to be the MAX. They have a lousy record as a carrier but things happen that surprise us sometimes.

I'm disappointed, though not surprised, reading the negative comments about this airline. Lion Air was one of the first few Indonesian airlines that were removed from the EU airline blacklist.

They are, even before the crash it appears their safety record are kind of at risk. They always blame customers for delays, cancellation, no complimentary food etc. So I hope this airline will ceased flying soon no matter what happen. P.S if everyone dies in this flight and the airline will file for bankruptcy soon I would appreciate this.

How about British Midland flight 92 that crashed in Kegworth, Leicestershire, UK? The 737-400 was less than four months old.

Gol Flight 1907, 3 weeks after delivery, should be up there as a “new plane”.

As for the flight, hoping for the best but things are certainly not looking good. And this is with Lion at least improving their safety record somewhat compare to the “one incident per month” a few years back.
