Delta Takes Delivery Of First Airbus A220-100

Fri Oct 26, 2018 4:07 pm

At last!

Delta Air Lines has taken delivery of its long-awaited Airbus A220-100, formerly known as Bombardier CSeries CS100. The Atlanta-based airline is the largest A220-100 customer, with a firm order for 75 aircraft. With this delivery, Delta becomes the first airline in America to operate the Canadian-manufactured plane after a long battle against Boeing.

I'm already booked on the inaugural flight from LGA to BOS on JAN31. Anyone else coming?

Can't wait to see more pictures of the interior. I'm not on the inaugural, but I'm very tempted to book a trip out of my neck of the woods.

For those wanting to track the delivery flight to ATL...

Why is the inaugural out on January 31? That's 3 months out, what's the aircraft doing for three months?

By January there will be 4 of them in the fleet.

Pretty short inaugural flight. 184 miles. The delay to takeoff at LGA will be longer than the time in the air.

Great looking aircraft. These can't replace the Maintenance Delay 88s fast enough.

Congrats to DL on their first Canabus!! This is also a big deal for Canada. Here’s to a bright future for the first Canadian mainline airliner.

It’s pretty hard to run an airline schedule with one plane in the fleet. There will be maintenance and crew training, proving runs for the FAA, acceptance and EIS work.

Quotes from the link in the OP:
"“We need to find something that’s going to be more fuel efficient, something that’s going to create a greater range, and a greater bandwidth of options and the CSeries (A220) fit the bill,” he said.

While the Boeing 717 is a quality aircraft and Delta paid pennies on the dollar for them (most Delta 717s are former AirTran aircraft on lease from Southwest Airlines), it does lack the range for many domestic missions.

The A220-100, on the other hand, offers over double the range of the Boeing 717 (1,415 miles vs. 3,100 miles) at highly efficient numbers. For Delta, this means the A220-100 can easily operate many missions the 717 cannot.

The A220-100 will also allow Delta to operate smaller narrow-body aircraft on “short and thin” routes"" (end of quote from the link)

Considering that Delta currently operates 91 Boeing 717 and that they plan to operate the A220 on a greater variety of missions than the 717, it seems reasonable to expect that Delta will eventually operate much more than 75 A220. Even the current 50 options seem rather conservative.

DL can set itself up for a follow-on order as the 717s are phased out and to upgauge regional jet flying as they plan to do now. With the -300 and hopefully -500 variants, DL can mix and match the three a/c to fit demand on any given route. I'd expect the -500 to still have the range to span half the continent if not a bit more.

It's an exciting an versatile a/c and finally one that seems to be better designed from a passenger comfort perspective.

If the A220 meets promise, I fully expect more A220s for expansion and eventually 717 replacement. The 717 is a great plane except for engine maintenance and fuel burn (both to be expected from it's role, era, and hand me down architecture).

I also fully expect as many threads on 717 replacement as the NW/DL DC-9 retirement.

Save the mad dog. Looking forward to working these nice birds in ATL. But nothing performs ( in this size range ) like an MD88 and I know for most it’s about comfort and quiet. Unfortunately the new “efficiency” sacrifices performance.

I am a Medallion and I choose MD-88 flights whenever I have an opportunity. The last maintenance delay I can recall having on an 88 was more than 10 years ago. Come to think of it, I can’t remember any maintenance delays of any significance in the last several years.

The 321s are nice, strange seating arrangement aside. The lavatories are also very tight, and I am a fairly thin person.

Hey, I mourn the loss of the Maddogs too!

But aside from the Avgeek sentimental value, the addition of the more modern aircraft is a step up for passenger experience.

Not really. It’s a little more convenient not to have to use my own screen on the plane, but with the Delta Studio thing, eh, good enough. Apart from that, honestly they’re not that different. They even added the blue mood lighting.

I guess the overhead bins aren’t as good. I don’t use them though.

You have either really, really good luck, or I have really bad luck. 3 of my last 5 MD-88 flights have been delayed for mechanical purposes. 2 of those 5 as well had broken APUs. I'll save the discussion about the old and uncomfortable cabins for another day. They've lived their life. I'm definitely on the side of putting the old dogs down.

So, DL will not operate the CS100; they will operate the A220

Well just to correct you further, the BD-500-1A10 is colloquially called the Canabus.

Does anyone know whether the BCS1/CS1 and BCS3/CS3 codes (ICAO/IATA) will change to A221/221 and A223/223? None of the latter are taken. (Although A225 is taken, by an aircraft just a wee bit bigger than a stretched A220.)

I thought the A321s and 737-900s were mostly a 757 replacement. For example, DTW-LAS used to frequently see the 757, and now it seems to be served almost exclusively by A321s and 737-900s.

Delta has spoken directly of 321s as MD-88 replacements, and of a general narrowbody upgauging strategy. CR2s get replaced by CR7s, CR7s by CR9/E75, E75 by 717/A220s, etc.

Perhaps A22V since A225 is taken by that aircraft that is just a smidge (ex: logarithmically) bigger :D

Delta Air Lines has taken delivery of its long-awaited Airbus A220-100, formerly known as Bombardier CSeries CS100. With this delivery, Delta becomes the first airline in America to operate the Canadian-manufactured plane after a long battle against Boeing.

I'm already booked on the inaugural flight from LGA to BOS on JAN31. Anyone else coming?

I’ve got a seat on the LGA-DFW on 1/31. Will arrive early to see the “inaugural” go, but chose the longer flight to get a better experience of the plane.

Positioning out of MSP... glad I’ve got some SkyMiles to burn.

Got to do the final DL 747 out of HNL (upper deck -awesome) so this will be another one to add to the list of AvGeekery.

First Cabin Photos of Delta's Airbus A220

Mon Oct 29, 2018 5:39 pm

Today in Atlanta, Delta invited a selected group of media to present its newest jet, the Bombairbus A220 :duck:

The plane looks great. Much like any other Delta narrowbody, which is a testament to the airline's consistency on hard product.

I love the fact that the plane kept the CSeries placard on the L1 entry door.

Also, love how the airline's CMO, Tim Mapes, said that the interior of the A220 will make customers enjoy it a lot more versus “dread” on competitor airlines!

Here are all the photos: https://airwaysmag.com/airlines/delta-s ... n-atlanta/

I'd choose this beauty over AA's tight 737 MAXs any day, any time.
